1. Umoja East Africa Fund – Kenya
Umoja East Africa Fund-Kenya (UEAF-Kenya) is an NGO based in Thika, Kenya.
Mission
To shape civil society in Kenya by sharing skills, technology and resources while respecting the
self-determined needs, culture and environment of the local population.
Goal: To develop self-reliant and fully empowered Kenyans.
Programme objectives
Work hand in hand with local communities to encourage self-employed citizens through
local resource management.
Help local organizations to plan, develop and initiate self-sustainable projects as a source
of locally generated income.
Promote simple and affordable technological skills that may lower the poverty margins at
local levels.
Empower participating communities with training in business skills so they are able run
their projects sustainably
Provide startup resources to initiate a self-sustaining project, as needed and if available.
Strategies
1. Assess sustainable project plans and provide training as needed to build capacity to
successfully implement the project. Training can be in agronomy, livestock, reforestation,
water/sanitation/hygiene, business skills, technology, project management, revenue
generation and organizational development and other areas, as needed
2. Provide technology support and technical assistance, where needed.
3. Provide resources to help start up a project, if needed and resources are available.
Key Staff
John Mwangi Ndungu is the founding director of Umoja East Africa Fund-Kenya and has 20
years’ experience as a trainer and facilitator of business planning and management for
entrepreneurs. He also has experience in sustainable agriculture, organic composting, and
community organizing.
Current project
Umoja East Africa Fund-Kenya is currently providing a comprehensive training program to
community-based groups in rural Kenya to help them identify a livelihood project that will help
make the community self-sustaining. Umoja East Africa Fund-Kenya provides the training
2. needed to acquire skills to successfully manage a project, such as project management,
leadership skills, financial management, and business planning.
Then UEAF-Kenya provides training on the livelihood the community groups choose to pursue,
such as organic farming, beekeeping, animal husbandry, fish farming or a social enterprise such
as access to quality drinking water.
UEAF-Kenya particularly focuses on women and youth in the targeted tribes of Kikuyus Kalejin
in Nakuru, Meru tribe in Meru, Somalis in Isiolo and Garissa, Maasai in Kajiado Narok Laikipia,
Mbeere in Embu, Kamba in Machakos.
Anticipated Outcomes
By the end of the training period, 80% of the community group members will learn about
agribusiness and social enterprise and be able to write a successful business plan which
will act as blue print by helping them earn a livelihood, plan their land and make profit.
The communities targeted by this project will start their own sustainable business
enterprise and 80% will be still in business after one year.
More farmers will learn farming in the context of business management so they can
operate their small farms as a sustainable business.
More groups will learn about value added processing to farm products they produce.
