4. Outcome
At the end of this presentation, students
would have:
Learned about radiography of the
Dorso- Lumbar Spine and pathologies
Be able to recognize abnormal
radiographic findings on the D-L Spine
and correlate with clinical presentations

11. The Dorsal Vertebrae
There are 12 Dorsal vertebrae
They have transverse processes and articular
facets for attachment to the ribs and muscles
There are intervertebral foramen, serving as
channel for the spinal cord and nerves
The vertebral bodies are separated by a soft pad;
called the disc

20. Lumbar Vertebrae
There are 05 Lumbar vertebrae
The size of the vertebral bodies enlarge from
L1 to L5, giving L4, L5 the largest density
Lumber vertebrae bear the bodies weight
They are flexible, facilitating bending and are
subject to multiple injuries
Common Pathologies: Disc herniation,
Spondylitis, Fractures, Inflammations, etc

24. Reasons for Dorso-Lumbar X-ray
To assess defects of the spine, like
kyphosis
Rule out cause of persistent back pain
Assess the vertebrae for fractures
Diagnose disc problems
Follow up assessment of the vertebrae
post medical intervention

43. Radiation Protection
This Should always be Practiced.
Nurses accompanying patients to the
Radiology Department should follow
Radiation safety rules as instructed by
radiographers during Radiographic exams and
should always read labels in radiology
Departments

44. Radiation Protection Con’t
All X-ray requests should be justified
Under no circumstances should the x-ray of a
patient be mistaken for another
Radiographic exams of the upper limbs
should be specific and limited
Sensitive parts of the patient’s body should
always be covered with lead aprons during
radiographic exams
