Music Video Deconstructs Pop Punk Genre Conventions
1. Question 1 β What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
Andrew Goodwin β music vid
Thought beats β I have used plenty of these as I specifically cut the clips to the
beat of the music and also to the change in guitar.
Narrative & Performance β Used both a narrative and performance in my
music video to keep it interesting and linking in with the song as the narrative
was about the main character/lead singer who got cheated on and his feelings
and the performance is of the band.
Star Image β This is prominent in the genre of my music video, which is pop
punk, which contains many close up shots of each member but more importantly
of the lead singer, or frontman/woman of the band. I have followed and
developed this in my main product as I used many close up shots of each
member but mostly focused on the lead singer.
Relation of visuals to the song β I have used this within the main product in
certain parts of the song.
Technical aspects β Used few effects, variety of shots, edited clips ect.
Usually in most pop punk videos they contain the sexualisation of women
(voyeurism) such as blink 182, all time low, panic! At the disco ect. Did not want
to follow this, as it doesnβt really fit in with the theme of the song.
Genre: subgenre of punk β pop punk, pop culture with punk culture.
Ancillary texts
Advert - Compared it to other media products each different but contain
important information such as β band, album title, album cover, release date,
website address, social media contact info β most common however some more
for pop artists contain reviews such as HMV 5/5 The Times 4/5 ect. (pretty
reckless-going down main inspiration as it is very simplistic and easy to view) β
star image.
Digipak β Compared it to other media products of the same genre, much variety
in styles ect. Importantly β album name linking in with the image used on front
cover. Have a main theme- research looked at band and Digipak, design & target
audience.
Common factors/ important information in a Digipak: Album name, band name,
bar code, institution image, song list, musical producer, copyright, images for
inner panels
Question 2 β How effective is the combination of your main product and
ancillary texts?
They both work together as the subject of the album links in with the theme of
the song eg heartbreak, feeling alone, cheated ect. Thus the front cover image of
the abandoned and broken couch. Convention of the chosen genre β not a pic of
2. the band for advert and Digipak, they have a main theme which they base it
around, advert front cover of album (the pretty reckless β going down album
main inspiration). Research on adverts and music videos all pop punk genre to
help understand and follow the conventions.
Question 3 β What have you learned from your audience feedback?
After doing 2 research techniques of audience research and feedback (survey &
fan base) & also peer feedback!! β Remember that was for the 1st cut of the video.
Peer feedback β Variety of shots, mis-en-scene, balance of narrative & perf
Needed to work on lip sync ect.
Audience research & feedback β

Learned more about the genre and understood it to follow the main conventions
