He decided to plant vineyards over large areas in order to compete with Madeira and Porto wines. He was said to be the French oenologist who planted the Grenache. The arrival of phylloxera in the mid-nineteenth century, decimated all European vineyards in a few years, including those of the Ducea di Bronte with the exception of those planted on the bottom of the seasonal lake Gurrida.

He decided to plant vineyards over large areas in order to compete with Madeira and Porto wines. He was said to be the French oenologist who planted the Grenache. The arrival of phylloxera in the mid-nineteenth century, decimated all European vineyards in a few years, including those of the Ducea di Bronte with the exception of those planted on the bottom of the seasonal lake Gurrida.
