2. Getting To Know Literacy Learners
Literacy Learners are either emergent, beginning or
fluent readers.
When assessing students through various books and
activities the above stages will begin to emerge.
Teachers must observe, document, interpret and
evaluate and plan in order to determine literacy learners
within their class.
“Assessing Word Knowledge” by Dr. Bear noted the
assessment process has four stages which I used for her
they are: observation, documentation, interpretation and
evaluation and planning.
3. Selecting Texts
Text comes in many forms from printed to digital media.
When selecting text teachers need to take into
consideration the readability, the text length, the text
structure and finally the size and print.
When selecting books or children’s literature it must be
of good quality for children from birth to adolescence,
covering topics of relevance and interests to children of
those ages through the various genres.
According to Lynch-Brown, C. & Tomlinson, C. (2005).
Essentials of Children’s Literature there are several values
that can be obtained from children’s literature they are as
follows: personal and academic
4. Literacy Lesson: Interactive
Perspective
Many students learn by the discovery method which is
highly an interactive perspective for teaching.
There are various activities which I have used and they are
highly interactive such as word walls, read aloud and grand
conversations.
‘Literacy for the 21st Century A Balanced Approach,’ by
Tompkins word walls are used for word study activities and
students can refer to them when they are writing.
5. Literacy Lesson: Critical and
Response Perspective
According to Dr. Almasi in the video “Critical Perspectives”
students think more deeply about text.
When text is selected students can view pictures and the
author, they can also compare text.
When teachers incorporated a website children are to
compare for themselves whether the information is accurate
or not when compare to the textbook.
Including critical and response perspectives into a lesson
will encourage students to make the right choices in various
situations because they will examine the all the facts and
opinions about the situations and then decide what
direction to go.
