Water pollution occurs through various human activities such as dumping sewage and industrial waste, littering, oil spills, agricultural runoff, and groundwater contamination. These pollutants contaminate water supplies by releasing chemicals, debris, excess nutrients and other materials. As a result, aquatic life is disrupted due to low oxygen levels, suffocation, or toxicity which upsets the natural ecological balance of rivers, lakes and oceans. Water pollution also causes increased algae growth, soil erosion, flooding and animal deaths.
