5. TYPE OF DRUG DEGRADATION
Drug degradation are two type:
1.Physical drug degradation
2.Chemical drug degradation
6. PHYSICAL DRUG DEGRADATION
It is the degradation which result into the change of physical nature of drug. Or physical degradation
involves change to materials resulting from ambient conditions like sunlight, heat, humidity
7. TYPES: TYPES OF PHYSICAL DEGRADATION ARE AS UNDER
Many kind of cause are responsible for physical drug degradation
Loss of water
Absorption of water
Polymorphic change
Color change
Crystal growth
Loss of volatile compound
8. LOSS OF VOLATILE COMPOUND
Many drug and excipient may be lost from pharmaceutical product at ambient temperature through
vaporization. They escape from the formulations rendering them degraded
Example:
Iodine , Menthol , Corpus , Chloroform
9. LOSS OF WATER
Loss of water may decrease the product stability that’s why product loss its weight. Product such as
emulsion exhibit cracking.
Example:
Water loss from oil
11. CRYSTAL GROWTH
Drug when lose water, become saturated and crystal growth occurs, molecule in crystal are not static, they
can grow in size move when there is a medium to travel.
Example:
Carbamazepine tablets
12. COLOR CHANGE
Color change indicates some kind of chemical decomposition of active ingredient
Example:
aspirin tablets, phenolphthalein
