Lutetium is a silvery white metal that is commonly found with other rare earth metals. It has an atomic weight of 174.967 and melts at 1663 degrees Celsius. Lutetium was discovered in 1907 by French scientist Georges Urbain, Austrian mineralogist Carl Avervon Welsbach, and American chemist Charles James, making it difficult to isolate from other elements.
