4. Scenario
----------------IDM PC Network Details – 2011-----------------
Background
IDM Computer Studies started the country's first ever Computer Education and Training
institution in Sri Lanka way back in 1981. Since then, with very close relationship with
industry, IDM has been introducing innovative programs to match the needs of the
industry from time to time, which provides Computer education, corporate trainings and
online exams on Information Technology and communication roughly pass out more than
1500 students in a one year of time for all ten IDM branches including IDM head office.
The IDM University College’s head office is the main place located at Colombo, which
direct courses for other branches.
Technical Background
At Head office
Several departments available with networked PC (IT, HR, ACCOUNTS,
PURCHASING…)
200 numbers of workstations
4 Servers including File, Directory, isa and database
Mainly Uphold wired LAN and WLAN, which maintain by internal administrator.

More than 54 branches available and Facilities, departments and other structures will be
varying branch to branch.

Assume for the year 2013, IDM Recruit you As an IT Mentor for all island branches
and mainly for the head office.

5. Task 1
1. Distinguish the difference between PC and networked PC
2. Explain scopes of network and roles of network including their characteristics.
3. Using given scenario carry out precise investigation for IDM head office and one
branch. Prepare a separate reports indicating current Technical back ground.
4. List and described available wireless technologies for computer networks.
5. According to T1 part 3, IDM top management thinks restructure head office and other
branches networks and hope outsource this task. Find network solution provided
companies available at Sri Lanka and examine the best option for IDM.
Task 2
1. Analyze the impact of a threat to IDM network.
2. Identify types of firewalls and make a comparison report.
3. List required software for ICT LAB according to T1 part 3.
4. Make proper software installation plan which required for IDM HO ICT LAB.
5. Find out details of Sri Lankan Data protection ACT and any other data/ privacy
protection ACTs.
