18. Anatolian peninsula covers a large area of Turkey,
approximately 97% of the total area. It is generally a high
plateau covered with several high mountains and mountain
ranges especially in the east of the country.
The existence of many valleys and high mountains, snow
precipitation and therefore its melting in the Spring, and
the climate of different regions favor the formation of lakes
and rivers.
Most of the water from these rivers are used for the
irrigation of the agricultural fields, but most important of all
for the hydroelectric energy with several dams built on
them.
19. Kızılırmak : meaning Red river in Turkish, is 1,355
km long and is the longest river of Turkey which
rises and ends within the country.
20. Yeşilırmak: Yeşilırmak , meaning Green river in Turkish, is
approximately 519 km long. It rises from Köse mountain in
the north of Sivas, passes from Tokat , Amasya and Samsun
provinces, and empties into the Black Sea.

pours to Persian Gulf. Its basin is 500.000 square
kilometre. There are five big hydroelectric power
plants on it and they provide 30 % of Turkey’s

Turkey's highest mountain Ararat, has a legendary status due to its
geologic location and the fact that it is believed to have been the final
resting place of Noah’s Ark. This peak, mentioned in the Bible, has
several names in different languages, the main ones being Ararat, Kuh -
i Nuh and Cebel ul Haristir.

These birds are almost being extinct as very few of them left in the world,
in Turkey for example it can be seen only in the Birecik district of Sanliurfa.
In 2001 there were only 42 of them but after a careful program now the
number has reached to 240.
