4. Application :
●
Manufacture of many everyday products, such as paint binders,
plasticisers,superabsorbents in baby nappies.
●
Acetaldehyde is also used in the manufacture of various types
of building materials, fire protection paints, synthetic
lubricants and explosives.
●
In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used, among other things,
in the manufacture of vitamins, sleeping aids and sedatives.
●
In the food industry, Acetaldehyde is used in the manufacture
of preservatives and flavourings and occurs naturally in fruit
and fruit juices.
6. Chisso Process :
● Acetylene is fed to the reactor, where it is hydrated
with water in single operation.
● Catalyst is added such as mercuric salt and
manganese dioxide at the head of scrubber and acid
solution containing this catalyst is named 'mother
liquid' and it is passed to vacuum still.
● Hot mother liquid carrying acetaldehyde is flashed at
low pressure maintained there. The mother liquor
which lost acetaldehyde passes back to top of reactor
7. ● Water remaining from vacuum still is partially
condensed in a partial condensing tower (here
86 weight % of acetaldehyde is increased).
● Vapors leaving at top of condensor are fed into
a rectifying column .
● At top of the tower pure Acetaldehyde and at
bottom crotonaldehyde and water are collected.
