1. PRODUCT ANALYSIS
1.1. General details
Chemical formula : C5H8O2
Appearance : Originally it is colourless crystals
The water solution is colourless oily liquid
Odour : Sharp pungent odour
CAS No. : 111-30-8
Alternate name : Pentanediol
Chemical structure : OHC-CH2-CH2-CH2-CHO
Molecular Mass : 100.117 g/mol
Boiling Point : 187-189ºC
Melting Point : -14 deg C
Solubility : Miscible in water 51.3 g/ml;
Soluble in Ethanol, Benzene, and Ether.
Stability
The anhydrous form of glutaraldehyde is unstable, and therefore, it is only available commercially as a
solution. Dilute glutaraldehyde solutions (1–3.5%) are typically used for disinfecting, but they tend to
polymerize with time, resulting in a solution containing limited aldehyde radicals and consequently
reduced antibacterial function. Glutaraldehyde solutions must, therefore, be prepared fresh on a regular
basis.
Increasing temperature will destabilize the product. Stable under acidic to neutral conditions.
Stable in light; It oxidizes in the presence of air.

2. PROCESS OUTLINE AND RAW MATERIAL DETAILS
2.1. Process outline
Glutardialdehyde is produced industrially by the following two methods
Gas-phase oxidation of cyclopentene
Diels-Alder reaction of Acrolein with methyl vinyl ether.
Both reactions utilize a multistage extraction with water to recover the glutaraldehyde.
2.2. Diels-Alder reaction of Acrolein with methyl vinyl ether.
In the Diels-Alder reaction, the reaction of acrolein and methyl vinyl ether in a 1:1 ratio results in 2-
methoxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (MDP, CAS No. 4454-05-1), which undergoes acidic hydrolysis in presence
of water and acid to yield glutaraldehyde and methanol at temperature 95 to 110 deg C for 2 to 3 hrs.
The crude hydrolysis product is distilled to produce a methanol overheads stream, a by-product of the
reaction that is itself suitable for recycling and use in other industrial processes, and a tails product
containing glutaraldehyde in water.
Raw material requirements
Basis: One kg of glutaraldehyde crystals (100% product)
Raw materials Requirements in kg
Acrolein 0.5
Methyl vinyl ether 0.5
Other miscellaneous products including catalyst,
DM water
-
2-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran is obtained as a intermediate product which upon acid hydrolysis
yields Glutaraldehyde solution of various concentrations.
