It involves dividing a market
into smaller segments of
buyers with distinct needs,
characteristics, or behaviors
that might require separate
marketing strategies or mixes.
Market Segmentation
It consists of evaluating each
market segment’s attractive-
ness and selecting one or
more market segments to
enter.
Market Targeting
Customer-Driven Marketing Strategy
It involves actually
differentiating the firm’s
market offering to create
superior customer value.
Differentiation
It consists of arranging for a
market offering to occupy a
clear, distinctive, and desirable
place relative to competing
products in the minds of
target consumers.

Market Segmentation
 Through market segmentation, companies divide large,
heterogeneous markets into smaller segments that can be
reached more efficiently and effectively with products and
services that match their unique needs.
 We discuss four important segmentation topics:
• Segmenting consumer markets
• Segmenting business markets
• Segmenting international markets
• Requirements for effective segmentation
1. Segmenting Consumer Markets
 There is no single way to segment a market.
 A marketer has to try different segmentation variables, alone
and in combination, to find the best way to view market
structure.
Geographic Segmentation
 Geographic segmentation calls for dividing the
market into different geographical units, such as
nations, regions, states, countries, cities, or even
neighborhoods.
 A company may decide to operate in one or a few
geographical areas or operate in all areas but pay
attention to geographical differences in needs and
wants.
Demographic Segmentation
 Demographic segmentation divides the market into
segments based on variables such as age, life-cycle stage,
gender, income, occupation, education, religion, ethnicity, and
generation.
 There are two reasons:
Consumer needs, wants, and usage rates often
vary closely with demographic variables.
Demographic variables are easier to measure
than most other types of variables.
Age and Life-Cycle Stage
• Dividing a market into
different age and life-
cycle groups
Gender
• Dividing a market into
different segments based
on gender
Income
• Dividing a market into
different income
segments
Psychographic Segmentation
 Psychographic segmentation divides buyers into
different segments based on social class, lifestyle, or
personality characteristics.
 People in the same demographic group can have
very different psychographic characteristics.
Behavioral Segmentation
 Behavioral segmentation divides buyers into segments based
on their knowledge, attitudes, uses, or responses concerning a
product.
Occasions
• Occasion segmentation divides the market into segments
according to occasions when buyers get the idea to buy, actually
make their purchase, or use the purchased item.
Benefits Sought
• Benefit segmentation divides the market into segments
according to the different benefits that consumers seek from the
product.
Behavioral Segmentation
User Status
• Markets can be segmented into nonusers, ex-users, potential
users, first-time users, and regular users of a product.
• Marketers want to reinforce and retain regular users, attract
targeted nonusers, and reinvigorate relationships with ex-users.
Usage Rate
• Markets can also be segmented into light, medium, and heavy
product users.
Loyalty Status
• A market can also be segmented by consumer loyalty.
• Consumers can be loyal to brands (Surf excel), stores (Agora),
and companies (Apple).
Using Multiple Segmentation Bases
 Marketers rarely limit their segmentation analysis to only one
or a few variables.
 Rather, they often use multiple segmentation bases in an effort
to identify smaller, better-defined target groups.
2. Segmenting Business Markets
 Business buyers can be segmented geographically,
demographically (industry, company size), or by benefits
sought, user status, usage rate, and loyalty status.
 Yet, business marketers also use some additional
variables, such as operating characteristics, purchasing
approaches, situational factors, and personal
characteristics.
3. Segmenting International Markets
 Geographic segmentation assumes that nations close to one
another will have many common traits and behaviors.
 Using intermarket segmentation (also called cross-market
segmentation), they form segments of consumers who have
similar needs and buying behaviors even though they are
located in different countries.
4. Requirements for Effective Segmentation
• The size, purchasing power, and
profiles of the segments can be
measured.
Measurable
• The market segments can be effectively
reached and served.
Accessible
• A segment should be the largest
possible homogeneous group worth
purchasing with a tailored marketing
program.
Substantial
• The segments are conceptually
distinguishable and respond
differently to different marketing mix
elements and programs.
Differentiable
• Effective programs can be designed for
attracting and serving the segments.
Actionable
Market Targeting
 The firm now has to evaluate the various segments
and decide how many and which segments it can
serve best.
Evaluating Market Segments
 In evaluating different market segments, a firm must
look at three factors:
Segment size and
growth
Segment
structural
attractiveness
Company
objectives and
resources
A segment is less attractive if it already
contains many strong and aggressive
competitors or if it is easy for new
entrants to come into the segment.
Selecting Target Market Segments
 A target market consists of a set of buyers who
share common needs or characteristics that the
company decides to serve.
 Using an undifferentiated marketing (or mass marketing)
strategy, a firm might decide to ignore market segment
differences and target the whole market with one offer.
 Such a strategy focuses on what is common in the needs of
consumers rather than on what is different.
Undifferentiated Marketing
 Using a differentiated marketing (or segmented
marketing) strategy, a firm decides to target several market
segments and designs separate offers for each.
 By offering product and marketing variations to segments,
companies hope for higher sales and a stronger position
within each market segment.
 Developing a stronger position within several segments
creates more total sales than undifferentiated marketing
across all segments.
Differentiated Marketing
Concentrated Marketing
 When using a concentrated marketing (or niche marketing)
strategy, instead of going after a small share of a large market,
a firm goes after a large share of one or a few smaller segments
or niches.
Micromarketing
 Micromarketing is the tailoring and marketing
programs to the needs and wants of specific
individuals and local customer segments; it includes
local marketing and individual marketing.

 Local Marketing.
• It involves tailoring brands and promotions to the needs and
wants of local customer groups ─ cities, neighborhoods,
and even specific stores.
Drawbacks
• It can drive up manufacturing and
marketing costs by reducing the
economies of scale.
• It also create logistics problems as
companies try to meet the varied
requirements of different regional and
local markets.
Micromarketing
 Individual Marketing.
• It is the tailoring products and marketing programs to the
needs and preferences of individual customers.
Differentiation and Positioning
 A product position is the way a product is defined
by consumers on important attributes ─ the place
the product occupies in consumers’ minds relative
to competing products.
• Consumers are overloaded with information
about products and services.
• They cannot reevaluate products every time
they make a buying decision.
• To simplify the buying process, consumers
organize products, services, and companies
into categories and “position” them in their
minds.
Choosing a Differentiation and
Positioning Strategy
 The differentiation and positioning task consists of three
steps:
1. Identifying a set of differentiating competitive advantages
on which to build a position
2. Choosing the right competitive advantages
3. Selecting an overall positioning strategy
Identifying Possible Value Differences and
Competitive Advantages
 The competitive advantage is an advantage over
competitors gained by offering greater customer value,
either by having lower prices or providing more benefits
that justify higher prices.
 To find points of differentiation, marketers must think
through the customer’s entire experience with the
company’s product or service.
 An alert company can find ways to differentiate itself at
every customer contact point.
Choosing the Right Competitive
Advantages
 How Many Differences to Promote.
• A company should develop a unique selling proposition (USP)
for each brand and stick to it.
 Which differences to Promote.
• A difference is worth establishing to the extent that it satisfies
the following criteria:
• Important
• Distinctive
• Superior
• Communicable
• Preemptive
• Affordable
• Profitable
Selecting an Overall Positioning
Strategy
 The full positioning of a brand is called the
brand’s value proposition ─ the full mix of
benefits on which a brand is differentiated and
positioned.
• It involves providing the most upscale product or service
and charging a higher price to cover the higher costs.
• It not only offers higher quality, it also gives prestige to
the buyer.
More for More
• Companies can attack a competitor’s more-for-more
positioning by introducing a brand offering comparable
quality at a lower price.
More for the Same
• It can be a powerful value proposition ─ everyone likes
a good deal.
The Same for Less
• A market almost always exists for products that offer less
and therefore cost less.
• Few people need, want, or can afford “the very best” in
everything they buy.
• In many cases, consumers will gladly settle for less than
optimal performance or give up some of the bells and
whistles in exchange for a lower price.
Less for Much Less
• Of course, the winning value proposition would be to offer
more for less.
• Many companies claim to do this. And, in short run, some
companies can actually achieve such lofty positions.
More for Less
• Thus, in any market, there is usually room for many
different companies, each successfully occupying
different positions.
• The important thing is that each company must
develop its own winning positioning strategy, one that
makes the company special to its target consumers.
Communicating and Delivering the
Chosen Position
 Once a company has built the desired position, it must
take care to maintain the position through consistent
performance and communication.
 It must closely monitor and adapt the position over time
to match changes in consumer needs and competitors’
strategies.

Customer-Driven Marketing Strategy It involves dividing a market into smaller segments of buyers with distinct needs, characteristics, or behaviors that might require separate marketing strategies or mixes. Market Segmentation It consists of evaluating each market segment’s attractive- ness and selecting one or more market segments to enter. Market Targeting
  • 5. Customer-Driven Marketing Strategy It involves actually differentiating the firm’s market offering to create superior customer value. Differentiation It consists of arranging for a market offering to occupy a clear, distinctive, and desirable place relative to competing products in the minds of target consumers. Positioning

Market Segmentation  Through market segmentation, companies divide large, heterogeneous markets into smaller segments that can be reached more efficiently and effectively with products and services that match their unique needs.  We discuss four important segmentation topics: • Segmenting consumer markets • Segmenting business markets • Segmenting international markets • Requirements for effective segmentation
  • 8. 1. Segmenting Consumer Markets  There is no single way to segment a market.  A marketer has to try different segmentation variables, alone and in combination, to find the best way to view market structure.

Geographic Segmentation  Geographic segmentation calls for dividing the market into different geographical units, such as nations, regions, states, countries, cities, or even neighborhoods.  A company may decide to operate in one or a few geographical areas or operate in all areas but pay attention to geographical differences in needs and wants.

Demographic Segmentation  Demographic segmentation divides the market into segments based on variables such as age, life-cycle stage, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, ethnicity, and generation.  There are two reasons: Consumer needs, wants, and usage rates often vary closely with demographic variables. Demographic variables are easier to measure than most other types of variables. Age and Life-Cycle Stage • Dividing a market into different age and life- cycle groups Gender • Dividing a market into different segments based on gender Income • Dividing a market into different income segments
  • 11. Psychographic Segmentation  Psychographic segmentation divides buyers into different segments based on social class, lifestyle, or personality characteristics.  People in the same demographic group can have very different psychographic characteristics.
  • 12. Behavioral Segmentation  Behavioral segmentation divides buyers into segments based on their knowledge, attitudes, uses, or responses concerning a product. Occasions • Occasion segmentation divides the market into segments according to occasions when buyers get the idea to buy, actually make their purchase, or use the purchased item. Benefits Sought • Benefit segmentation divides the market into segments according to the different benefits that consumers seek from the product.

Behavioral Segmentation User Status • Markets can be segmented into nonusers, ex-users, potential users, first-time users, and regular users of a product. • Marketers want to reinforce and retain regular users, attract targeted nonusers, and reinvigorate relationships with ex-users. Usage Rate • Markets can also be segmented into light, medium, and heavy product users. Loyalty Status • A market can also be segmented by consumer loyalty. • Consumers can be loyal to brands (Surf excel), stores (Agora), and companies (Apple).
  • 14. Using Multiple Segmentation Bases  Marketers rarely limit their segmentation analysis to only one or a few variables.  Rather, they often use multiple segmentation bases in an effort to identify smaller, better-defined target groups.

Segmenting Business Markets  Business buyers can be segmented geographically, demographically (industry, company size), or by benefits sought, user status, usage rate, and loyalty status.  Yet, business marketers also use some additional variables, such as operating characteristics, purchasing approaches, situational factors, and personal characteristics.

Segmenting International Markets  Geographic segmentation assumes that nations close to one another will have many common traits and behaviors.  Using intermarket segmentation (also called cross-market segmentation), they form segments of consumers who have similar needs and buying behaviors even though they are located in different countries.
  • 17. 4. Requirements for Effective Segmentation • The size, purchasing power, and profiles of the segments can be measured. Measurable • The market segments can be effectively reached and served. Accessible • A segment should be the largest possible homogeneous group worth purchasing with a tailored marketing program. Substantial • The segments are conceptually distinguishable and respond differently to different marketing mix elements and programs. Differentiable • Effective programs can be designed for attracting and serving the segments. Actionable
  • 18. Market Targeting  The firm now has to evaluate the various segments and decide how many and which segments it can serve best.
  • 19. Evaluating Market Segments  In evaluating different market segments, a firm must look at three factors: Segment size and growth Segment structural attractiveness Company objectives and resources A segment is less attractive if it already contains many strong and aggressive competitors or if it is easy for new entrants to come into the segment.
  • 20. Selecting Target Market Segments  A target market consists of a set of buyers who share common needs or characteristics that the company decides to serve.
  • 21.  Using an undifferentiated marketing (or mass marketing) strategy, a firm might decide to ignore market segment differences and target the whole market with one offer.  Such a strategy focuses on what is common in the needs of consumers rather than on what is different.   • 22.  Using a differentiated marketing (or segmented marketing) strategy, a firm decides to target several market segments and designs separate offers for each.  By offering product and marketing variations to segments, companies hope for higher sales and a stronger position within each market segment.  Developing a stronger position within several segments creates more total sales than undifferentiated marketing across all segments.   • 23. Concentrated Marketing  When using a concentrated marketing (or niche marketing) strategy, instead of going after a small share of a large market, a firm goes after a large share of one or a few smaller segments or niches.
  • 24. Micromarketing  Micromarketing is the tailoring and marketing programs to the needs and wants of specific individuals and local customer segments; it includes local marketing and individual marketing.
  • 25. Micromarketing  Local Marketing. • It involves tailoring brands and promotions to the needs and wants of local customer groups ─ cities, neighborhoods, and even specific stores. Drawbacks • It can drive up manufacturing and marketing costs by reducing the economies of scale. • It also create logistics problems as companies try to meet the varied requirements of different regional and local markets.
  • 26. Micromarketing  Individual Marketing. • It is the tailoring products and marketing programs to the needs and preferences of individual customers.

Differentiation and Positioning  A product position is the way a product is defined by consumers on important attributes ─ the place the product occupies in consumers’ minds relative to competing products. • Consumers are overloaded with information about products and services. • They cannot reevaluate products every time they make a buying decision. • To simplify the buying process, consumers organize products, services, and companies into categories and “position” them in their minds.
  • 28. Choosing a Differentiation and Positioning Strategy  The differentiation and positioning task consists of three steps: 1. Identifying a set of differentiating competitive advantages on which to build a position 2. Choosing the right competitive advantages 3. Selecting an overall positioning strategy

Identifying Possible Value Differences and Competitive Advantages  The competitive advantage is an advantage over competitors gained by offering greater customer value, either by having lower prices or providing more benefits that justify higher prices.  To find points of differentiation, marketers must think through the customer’s entire experience with the company’s product or service.  An alert company can find ways to differentiate itself at every customer contact point.

Choosing the Right Competitive Advantages  How Many Differences to Promote. • A company should develop a unique selling proposition (USP) for each brand and stick to it.  Which differences to Promote. • A difference is worth establishing to the extent that it satisfies the following criteria: • Important • Distinctive • Superior • Communicable • Preemptive • Affordable • Profitable

Selecting an Overall Positioning Strategy  The full positioning of a brand is called the brand’s value proposition ─ the full mix of benefits on which a brand is differentiated and positioned. • It involves providing the most upscale product or service and charging a higher price to cover the higher costs. • It not only offers higher quality, it also gives prestige to the buyer. More for More • Companies can attack a competitor’s more-for-more positioning by introducing a brand offering comparable quality at a lower price. More for the Same • It can be a powerful value proposition ─ everyone likes a good deal. The Same for Less • A market almost always exists for products that offer less and therefore cost less. • Few people need, want, or can afford “the very best” in everything they buy. • In many cases, consumers will gladly settle for less than optimal performance or give up some of the bells and whistles in exchange for a lower price. Less for Much Less • Of course, the winning value proposition would be to offer more for less. • Many companies claim to do this. And, in short run, some companies can actually achieve such lofty positions. More for Less • Thus, in any market, there is usually room for many different companies, each successfully occupying different positions. • The important thing is that each company must develop its own winning positioning strategy, one that makes the company special to its target consumers.

Communicating and Delivering the Chosen Position  Once a company has built the desired position, it must take care to maintain the position through consistent performance and communication.  It must closely monitor and adapt the position over time to match changes in consumer needs and competitors’ strategies.

  1. Companies today recognize that they cant appeal to all buyers in the marketplace or at least not to all buyers in the same way. Buyers are too numerous, too widely scattered and too varied in their needs and buying practices. Companies vary widely in their abilities to serve different segments of the market.
