Conjunction is derived from old Greek word “conjunctous”
that mean to connect.
Definition
conjunction is a word or group of words that are
used to connect Two sentences, two clauses, two
phrases or two words.

Hameed works very hard and Tahir works
very hard (sentences)
He will earn much money if he works hard. (clause)
On the main road and in the park. (phrase).

6. Types of conjunction
There are three types of conjunction.
1) Coordinating Conjunction
2) Correlative or paired Conjunction
3) Subordinative Conjunction
1) Coordinating Conjunction
Coordinating conjunctions are those conjunction which join
other verbs, phrases and sentence that have equal in
grammar and meaning.

Types of Coordinating conjunction
There are four types of coordinating conjunction
a) Cumulative Coordinating Conjunction
Which add one statement to another
i.e and, so
Example
Abdullah and Hassan are students.
Since you say so, I must believe it.
8. b)Illative Coordinating Conjunction
which show result or cause
i.e for, so
Example
The weather is cold so we need to turn off the fans.
I waited for my friend until he came.
C) Alternative Coordinating Conjunction
IT show choice
i.e or, nor
Example
She will go to shopping or university.
They can’t speak Arabic nor Chinese.
9. d) Adversative Coordinating Conjunction
It show opposition
i.e but, yet
Example
Hassan is intelligent but naughty.
The fans are on, yet they are not working.
10. 2) Correlative or paired Conjunction
Correlative or paired conjunction are those which are used to
combine paired of verbs or phrases that are equal in grammar
and meaning.
i.e
Both____And
Either____ or
Neither___nor
Not only___ But also
Example
Both Abdullah and Hassan are barber.
He enjoys either dancing or singing.
Neither the wives nor the husband is fighting.
Not only the student but also the teacher is preparing.
11. 3) Subordinating Conjunction
Subordinating Conjunction are those which join
an incomplete clause.
Types of Subordinating Conjunction
It is divided into five parts according to there meaning.
a) Time
They show the time of an action or event.
i.e while, when, before, after, since, as
Example
The students were setting when I entered
the class.
12. b) Purposes
They show the purposes of doing an action.
Example
You come to university so that you can gain knowledge.
C) Cause and Effect
They show cause in case of clause with in effect or result
in main clause.
i.e because, since, as, now that, as long as, as much as.
Example
He may enter as he is a friend.
13. d) Contrast
They show a direct or indirect contrast with in unexpected result.
i.e though, although, even though, while, where as.
Example
Although Ali Rehman jumped from 4th floor, he is
completely perfect.
E) Condition
They show the condition with result.
i.e whether, if, only if, in case that
Weather Abdullah is invited or not, he will go to the party.
