5. Factors that Affect your Metabolism
To stay alive and functioning, your body has to carry
out millions of chemical processes, which are
collectively known as your metabolism.
metabolism can play a role in weight gain by
influencing the amount of energy your body needs at
any given point. Excess energy is then stored as fat.
The biggest component of our metabolism, (50-80%)
of the energy used, is your basal metabolic rate
(BMR), which is the energy your body burns just to
maintain functioning at rest.
6. Different approaches to improve thermal comfort of clothing:
The first priority of all design should be the heat
retention in cold environment and easy heat release
in hot climate by the clothing for any physical
activity level.
There are different approaches in the development of
functional clothing including use of appropriate
textile material, creativity in design and attachment
of special devices.
7. Different approaches to improve thermal comfort of clothing:
( a) Appropriate use of textile material:
Fabric produced from hydrophilic fibres absorbs
water, moisture & sweat quickly, keeping the skin
dry, hence comfortable in sportswear.
Thick fabric feels warm and fine fabrics feels cool
due to their thermal insulation property.
8. Different approaches to improve thermal comfort of clothing:
(b)Use of single or multiple layers of fabric in the garment
construction :
Still air is a barrier to transfer heat from human
body to environment. Multilayer fabric in the
clothing provides more still air layer, hence
comfortable in cold weather.
Single layer fabric in a clothing facilitates easy
transfer of body heat , hence comfortable in hot
weather.
9. Different approaches to improve thermal comfort of clothing:
( c ) Special construction to improve ventilation :
In case of some functional outer wear, use of wind
proof or water proof shell fabric is required, which is
less permeable to perspiration .Breathable fabric is
used to overcome this problem but breathability
performance is limited.
10. Different approaches to improve thermal comfort of clothing:
(d)Use of functional textiles :
Moisture management fabric is one of the functional
textile material which has been developed.
The main concept of this type of fabric is quicker
drying rate and efficient removal of moisture away
from the skin.
11. Different approaches to improve thermal comfort of clothing:
(E) Garment design :
Garment design influences the thermal resistance
and evaporative performance of clothing.
Tight fit garment shows more thermal resistance
than loosely fitted garment.
In case of loosely fitted garments due to body
movement, pumping action forces out the worm air
and moisture reducing thermal resistance of
clothing.
12. Different approaches to improve thermal comfort of clothing:
( f ) Attachment of wearable devices :
Air cooling system may be incorporated in the
garment to cool down body temperature in the hot
weather.
Very light weight fans can be attached in the
shoulder area like normal fans to provide air flow to
cool down body temperature.
13. What is sports textile / sportech?
Sports textile is a branch of technical textile.
Sportswear or active wear is a garment that is worn
for sports or physical exercise for practical, comfort
or safety reason.
Now a days sports demand high performance
equipments and apparel.
The lightweight and safety features of sportswear
have become important properties of sportswear.
Sports textiles is the combination of functional
value with wearing comfort that gives high level of
performance.
14. Types of sports textile
Sports textile can be classified into following
classes.
Sport specific garments.
Specialized garments.
Sports footwear.
Protective gear.
Sports specific garments:
These are garments which are wore during
sports.
Example: Tracksuits,
T-shirt,
Tennis shirt,
Polo shirt.

15. Types of sports textile
Protective gear
These types of sports accessories are worn
during sports.
Example: Head gear.
Eye and face shields.
Football helmet.
Eye-shield.
Rib protector.
Shoulder pads.
Hip, tail, thigh, knee pads.
