2. Language Arts
At the beginning of the month, students will continue to focus on writing a
literary essay. They are working to plan and organize their post-assessment essay.
They will revise, edit, and publish their literary essay.
Mid-month, students will begin analyzing and writing persuasive essays. They
will analyze mentor texts, consider reasons for and against an issue, and begin to
draft a persuasive essay.
Students will explore suffixes in word study.
MATH
In math we are wrapping up our focus on algebra and will test Friday,
February 6th
. Our next focus will be finding the area of triangles
(chapter 6). This short unit will consist of finding the base and height
of a triangle, then finding the area as half of its base times its height.
Tentative test date is Thursday, February 19th
Vocabulary: vertex, side, angle, base, height, perpendicular, area, right
angle, acute triangle, obtuse triangle.
Late February we will begin our unit on ratios (chapter 7). In this
chapter, students learn to compare two numbers by using division and
express this comparison as a ratio. They apply the concepts of
equivalent ratios, part-whole, part-part, and whole-part comparisons to
solve 1 and 2-step real world problems involving ratios.
Vocabulary: ratio, term, equivalent ratios, simplest form, greatest
common factor.
Reading
Students continue to examine informational text. Students will analyze
multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and
differences in the point of view they reflect.
Mid-month, students will begin to read and discuss historical fiction. Students
will receive a literature contract. They will take part in literature discussions and
complete various comprehension, vocabulary, and literary element activities
associated with their literature book.
3. Science
A science test covering Forces and Motion Lessons 1-8 is scheduled for
Tuesday, February 24th. This will be the only test of the third quarter. Please
remind your child to study each day prior to the test. They should use their study
guide, science journal, previous assignments, copies of notes and reading pieces. In
addition, students should think about information shared in class discussions and
investigations.
Students continue to explore Newton’s Laws of Motion. They will investigate
and describe the difference between mass and weight. Students will also describe
the relationship between the mass of an object and its motion.
In addition, students will explore six simple machines which include the lever,
pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, and screw. Students will identify the
force and explain how the application of force in simple machine is reduced due to
the properties of the machine that allow the user to apply a lesser force over a
longer distance.
Later in the unit, students will explore the four forces (thrust, drag, weight,
lift) that affect the flight of an airplane.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In social studies, we will begin to learn about the 13 Colonies. We will be
discussing the people and events that helped shape our colonial heritage. In this
unit (unit 3 in the book), the kids will be leaning about the Spanish, French, and
British colonists who settled throughout North America. They will learn how
the early British colonies grew over time, and how the British colonists worked
to make North America truly their home. Students should expect several short
quizzes regarding the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies! Please look
on the 5th
grade calendar for tentative test dates.
