Contacting Q magazine:
Relationship with the Magazine and
consumers
Before I carried out my research for Q magazine, I had to contact someone by email that
worked for the magazine. I have done this to get information before taking it in mind. I sent an
email to Q magazine about the advertising within the magazine and if they could possibly
provide me with any information that can be helpful for my research that I am studying. I also
have some information on the press pack which I found only advertises Q festivals and other
information that I needed for my research. I found that this was more helpful with the
information on the Q magazine website which I may need to carry out into investigation.

Date of First Publication-Q magazine started in October 1986, the EMAP group were
going to call the magazine “cue” with the sub title “The modern guide to music and more”
but the audience was firstly confused about the name of the magazine and thought it was
a snooker magazine instead of a pop magazine. The EMAP group Later on that year
changed the name to the letter “Q” and released it as a monthly magazine, giving readers
up to date information about music.
Publisher-Q magazine was firstly published by the EMAP group and was then sold to the
Bauer media group. The two editors of Q magazine (Mark Ellen and David Hepworth)
discussed and thought of the idea about creating a new magazine that has a very large
audience group and talks about different types of genres.
Associated Products-on the Q magazine website, it supply's you with information such as
what the magazine is about, the music, festivals that are coming soon and a subscription of
the magazine. It also includes Q radio which first started in the early year of 2008 when the
Bauer media group took over the magazine fully. The Bauer media group had to then cancel
the broadcast later on that year because they wanted to change their station to kisstory.

Dimensions/size of Q magazine-on the Q magazine website, I have found that the
magazine can do a version where they can either print or use digital for just 30 pounds if
you subscribe to the magazine. it depends on the device you use to subscribe to it on
because it will have a different view on content, the magazine is 30.6x 22.2 x 1.2cm in
size.
Print and Digital-Q Magazine publish their magazines through print based and online
media, this is implies that it will be easer for their audience to access it and still keep
up to date on what the magazine provides. On the Q magazine website, they have
subscription services where anyone can subscribe to the magazine for a reasonable
price. This will be included for both the the print and the digital versions which are
available on the package. This will give readers information which Q magazine
provides and will also offer them a number of magazines that will be realised every
month for them to read. This would mean every reader that is subscribed to the
magazine wont miss out even if Q magazine doesn't’t sell a magazine for one month,
the reader that is subscribed will still purchase a copy online.

Style of Q magazine-Q magazine follow a style throughout the magazine to show their
readers that they have a continuous pattern throughout every copy a reader would

scheme, this will be useful for readers because they will start to know what the

they continue throughout the magazine so readers will know it is Q magazine.

The Magazine Production process
Continued
Date of publication – Firstly, you set up a data publication. This is when you want the magazine
to be released to the public. Music magazines take around 2 months to produce and plan
because there is a lot of research to be completed.
Managing the schedule- secondly, once the date of the publication has been set up, a schedule
will be created. This is because if you want your magazine to be produced effectively then a
schedule needs to be made. The pros to a schedule is that if anything changes from the initial
plan, there will be an alternative plan. Having this will allow deadlines to be made.
Editorial and budgetary decision – this part of the production process is where the editorial
team make a decision on what will be included in the magazine, for example articles,
competitions, pictures and news stories. After this the team make budgetary decisions, looking
at money that is available to them.
Content Acquisition- this part they decide who is going to create the content, they choose
between in-house writers or external writers to write about specific topics. Furthermore
illustrations are also created.

The Magazine Production process
Sub-editing- the next step which is taken focuses on quality control of the magazine, the
person that is usually responsible for this job is the sub editor. This sub editing involves spelling
and grammar, mistakes page layout and article facts.
Page layout- the editorial team will decide the layout of the magazine. They do this because it
allows the reader to read the magazine clearly.
Proof reading- this stage is where the first copy of the magazine is developed and will be
looked over by the editorial team. For example they will look out for any spelling and layout
mistakes, if they find these, a new version will be created and printed.
Publication and distribution- once all these processes have been completed, the magazine will
be sent out to print and then once printed, it will be distributed to the stores and then to the
public.
Socio Economic needs-
Target Audience
The founders of Q are Mark Ellen and David Hepworth, the magazine
is mainly aimed at young people and teenagers. The target audience
for Q is mainly aimed at people over 25 years old, of both genders.
The target audience is older than teenagers which means that Q
magazine can afford to be expensive because it is so longer aimed at
young people. Also with the older audience, The magazine features
many genres of music, so it will suit all music fans, this would mean
that the audience has a big audience as it is so popular. The target
audience for Q according to the uses and gratifications theory, Q
magazine would fit into the category of ‘inform and educate’ (Katz)
where the audience learn something from consuming the text. Also it
is in the diversion category because the audience can escape from
their reality where they can involve themselves in the text.

This provides a clear overview of who the typical reader of Q magazine is, whereby the
dominant age group of the readership is 15-24 and a huge 68.2% of the readers are male.
This is because the magazine covers male orientated content such as female artist’s they
that would encourage a ‘Male gaze’.
Reader Profile
Reader Profile
Laura Mulvey (1975) – ‘Male Gaze’
Male gaze- is the tendency to see the world and women from the male perspective.
Deliberately erotic
pose to attract male
readers so that they
buy the magazine
Cheryl is seen here in a provocative way so that men spend longer looking at the front cover and
will buy the magazine.
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications
According to Katz Uses & Gratifications Q magazine is fits into the category of ‘inform and
educate’ where the audience of Q magazine will learn something by reading the information
for example readers could be reading about an article and they could possibly learn something
about within the article they are reading. This will then get Q magazine readers to learn
something by reading this information. The “200 things you didn’t know about The Beatles”
would fit into this ‘informative’ category.
Hartley
According to Hartley’s seven
subjectivities, the age group for Q
magazine is mainly aimed at 16-25
year Old's, secondly the gender for the
magazine is aimed at both male and
female readers. The demographics and
socio economics for Q would fit into
the group D and E because it is mainly
for people that enjoy indie music
which means it wouldn’t be upper
class compared to other magazines.
Maslow
According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, Q
magazine would be categorized as ‘survivors’ because
the readers like a routine and what to know when the
magazine will be produced every month.
Psychographics
According to the psychographics table, the target
audience for Q magazine would fit into the category of
‘Reformers’ because Q’s target audience would like to
be aware of new information which would be published
each month for viewers to read, also the audience
would select products of Q magazine that were at top
quality. Also the target audience would be also aimed
at ‘strugglers’ as they seek escape and the people in the
D and E demographic. Lastly the target audience would
be ‘Aspirers’ because Q magazine is related to younger
people who seek status which therefore they would be
interested in Q magazine because it would seek a lower
status which means young viewers would more likely
be interested.
Style of Language
The style of language for Q magazine
consists of informal language which is
used throughout the magazines they
publish to their readers. The informal
language attracts a younger audience
towards reading the magazine. The
verbal code and alliteration “secret
stash” which is evident on the cover
line of the Keith Richards secondary
lead is an example of the informal
language they use.
Content Overview
A typical issue of Q magazine provides content about individual artists who convey
‘star appeal’ (Richard Dyer) such as Sam Smith and Foo Fighters, which connotes
that readers will be more interested about reading about particular artists
because of the type of content Q magazine use in different articlesstories, such
as using verbal codes like “heartbreak” which would attract younger audiences
such as teenagers to read specific content they produce.

Q Website - Analysis
Relationship Between the
Magazine and Audience
http://www.qthemusic.com
The website encourages interaction with
this print media product online.
Certain features that encourage this
interrelationship between the reader and
magazine are highlighted to the left from
the Navigation menu.
The interviews allow the reader to build a
much clearer ‘personal relationship’ (Katz)
with the magazine and is more appealing
to the readers online as people seem to
rely on the internet to receive their
information because it is considered an
easier way to access information.
Convergent technology and interactive
features such as Video contain for
example “The Q awards” where the
audience can see artists collecting an
award.
Finally, the ‘Track of the day’ would be
important for ‘social climbers’ (Maslow)
because it would make them aware what is
popular and trending within Q magazine.
Technological Convergence
You can subscribe to Q online and enjoy VIP packaging which allows you to access Q
magazine from two different platforms, which are digital and print. You can also read
a digital subscription and download the latest issue on a device. Q is dedicated to
interviewers with popular artists and it has a large review section that includes: new
music realizes, music compilations, film live concert, radio and television reviewers
that are rated from one to five stars.
Advertising to Consumers: TV
Advert Example
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78UVEVzPeX4
Throughout my research of Q magazine, I have found a YouTube advert that promotes the
magazine overall. This sort of advertisement is available on social media, the magazine also
has a YouTube channel where they keep viewers updated with the latest news and publications
of the magazine. At the start of the video you can see the “Q” logo against a white coloured
background, the logo is a bold red colour. This is to catch the readers away as it will be the first
thing they will see when they click on the video. After, the content of the magazine is then seen
in the video with bold lettering and music. The advertisement overall introduces the reader a
chance to see what type of content is going to be featured in the magazine. Lastly on the video,
you can then see an example of a front cover to demonstrate to viewers what the magazine
looks like which also includes the logo so readers will then know it is Q magazine.
The video was uploaded on
September in 2014, there
have been 190 views on the
video. The advert has gained
popularity when the video was
first uploaded, this is because
viewers have taken interest in
the magazine and the content
it provides.
The video is only 30
seconds long meaning that
it is a television advert
which will get readers
curious to what is next for Q
magazine.
Advertising to consumers-Print Example
Within my research for Q magazine, I have taken a picture
of a print based advertisement they use within the
magazine. The picture that is clearly shown is one
example of a print advertisement. Firstly it uses the Q
ident in order to make readers aware that it is Q
magazine, the background is red on the background with a
Q in bold coloured in white. The words “New Adventures in
sound” implies to the readers that something new and
exciting is happening within the music industry, this could
possibly be an advertisement for the “Q awards” which is
an awards ceremony where different artists are chosen to
collect their awards for nominated. other visual codes
could include how they have used waves of sound to
demonstrate to readers that it is music related. On the
bottom of the advertisement, the magazine has a line-up
of artists that are presenting to the public with new music.
Young people and teenagers will be interested in this
because they may have an artist they like within the
names that are shown on the print example. The
magazine has also written some of the artists in the colour
red to represent the magazine so readers will know it is
from Q. this will encourage readers to seek more
information from the magazine, this will mean that they
would more likely rely on the magazine for updates and
information.
Advertising Pricing
The price of Q magazine is £5.95, advertising within the magazine
includes choosing where to place the advert, what type of
advertisement it is, how big it is and if it can fit on the page
including the layout. The cost of the Advertisement depends how
much readership it gets, for example if readers take interest in the
advertisement then it will cost more money for Q magazine to
invest in.
This is an example of an Advertisement
which was published on the 24th October
from Q magazine, this is to help the
magazine gain popularity which will keep
readers informed about updated information
about the magazine.
National Express Partnership with Q-Relationship with
the Advertiser and the Publisher
Q magazine started a partnership with the
National Express to help with the
advertisement at the London, United
kingdom festival in late August. The
purpose was to to and get the audience to
go to the music events throughout the year
and to use the national Express coach to
travel to these places as an advertisement
for the campaign.
Source: http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/uploads/QMediaPack-Feb2013.pdf
The purpose of the introduction of the
partnership was to offer a competition for
readers to win an experience while they
were travelling to the festival. They also
include a Rock ‘n Roll experience that hires
private entertainment throughout the
journey.
There are a variety of ways that the
partnership competition was brought out to
readers, for example Q magazine published
two pages that are in the magazine that try
to encourage readers to enter their
competitions so readers get the best out of
the magazine. Q also want readers opinions
on the magazine overall so they know how
to improve it to make it better.
The masthead is the title of the
magazine and as you can see there is a
red box with the letter Q in white
writing.
Another convention of a
Magazine cover is the main
image. The denotation of the
main image is “Florence and The
Machine” which connotes “star
appeal” (Richard Dyer). The
technical code of the close up of
Florence grabs the readers
attention as the front cover is
mainly focusing on her.
The visual codes on the front cover such as
the pale blue dashes and bullet points are
other conventions, the bullet points in the
cover line interest the reader through the
brief summary and therefore they would
want to read more.
The strapline is placed underneath
the masthead, the strapline denotes
“Discover great music” which
connotes inside this magazine there
will be new and updated
information about the music
industry and the audience will be
able to “Discover” this by buying
and reading the magazine.
On the left and right hand side of the
page, there are coverlines which is
information about what is inside of the
magazine, for example “16 page Gig”.
Coverlines are an insight to the audience
about what they can read. The barcode contains the
date, issue number and price,
furthermore there is usually a
web address (technical
convergence) which allows
the audience to view the
magazine online.
The main story is featured at
the top, the main story anchors
the image. The verbal code “I
feel so alone” connotes that this
will be an interesting story and
entices the reader to want to
know what it is about.
Codes and conventions
Denotations and Connotations of Q Front Cover
Main Image - in this double
page spread, Florence is
looking directly at the
reader which suggests that
she is inviting the readers
into the article.
In the main article of the double page spread, the drop
capital is used to catch the readers attention at the
beginning of the text. The Font style is bold to try and
make the readers interested in the Magazine. The
purpose of the drop capital is to signal the reader where
to begin.
This article is in columns which implies the
conventions of a double page spread and
this is also usually a interview that is in
columns.
This heading is very
appropriate because
it is a line of one of
Florence's number
one singles. The bold
front stands out to
get the readers
attention as the front
is different from the
others in this article
The colour red is an
extremely bold colour and
suggests passion and fire
which could connote the
artists passion for music
The stand first is the
introduction for the
interview, this gives
the reader an insight
on what the interview
or column is about
and allows them to
decide if they want to
read it or not.
Credits- this writing states
who wrote the article and
who took pictures.
Usually in an interview on a
double page spread, there is a
pull quote which is a quote
from the artist pulled out of
the interview. This is usually a
quote that is interesting,
making the audience want to
read the interview.

Conclusion
Throughout this LO I have spoken about how Q
magazine advertises within the magazine for example
introducing competitions for readers to enter which will
also make the magazine more popular. I have also
spoken about the brand extensions of the magazine, for
example Q do an awards ceremony which is celebrated
for the most popular artists. Overall I have analysed Q
magazine by talking about how the magazine became
popular and what is featured within it.
Section two: Newspaper
Genre
Free sheet-there are many newspapers that deal out with no charge, meaning that customers
would have the newspaper for free. This will be very popular and will include large amounts of
advertising content that readers will be attracted to.
These newspapers are either being handed out to the people of the public or they can be
found at newspaper stands for the entire day. Free sheet was originally made the 1880s in
Germany and were then given out twice a week continuously for people that wanted to read it
in a town called Lubeck. Free sheet had the largest amount of readers in the newspaper Metro,
this newspaper has been very popular over the years, it originally started in the year 1995. The
newspaper was firstly a free sheet in public areas in Sweden where they would just sell the
magazine how it is. After the newspaper became popular in many countries including the UK,
Metro had made 13 issues with 1.3 million readers within the UK which is increasing by the
minute.
Red Top Tabloid- This newspaper has been named through the idea of the masthead as it is
red and bold, the original size of the newspaper is 11 x 17 and has five columns going across.
This is because the tabloid is much smaller than the newspaper and is bigger than just a
general newspaper. This is so the newspaper can produce much smaller content for the
newspaper but it will still be at it’s best quality. The style within each page of the newspaper are
known as the topics of the paper, meaning each page will have different stories such as what
has been happening in the news, sports stars and other stories they wish to include. The price
overall of the newspaper is very cheap around 80p for each copy. This is because of the
advertising within the newspaper.
Source: http://www.newspapers.co.uk/newspaper-types-and-formats/
Source: http://www.newspapers.co.uk/newspaper-types-and-formats/
Broadsheet
Broadsheet means to refer to the newspaper in a different format for example meaning
the page and making sure everything fits perfectly onto the page with the content.
Broadsheet’s can be small or large depending which country you are in and how big or
small the person would want the advertising range to be. They would often have more or
less pages depending on the quality and the price of the overall newspaper. It is said that
more academic people seem to read these type of newspapers because of how detailed
the stories can be and the subject it is talking about in general.
Compared to the tabloid newspaper which is a broadsheet, it includes more than one final
story on the front cover of the newspaper. They seem to include many stories around the
newspaper pages talking about different topics. The newspaper do this to reduce the
advertising rate and use more space. In the newspaper, it seems to have more interesting
stories on the top instead of the bottom to catch the readers attention, this is to make the
newspaper more known by people.
The Broadsheet newspapers were first used in the year of 1618 where they have been
first published to the public eye in the Netherlands. They were first in the UK in the year of
1700 where the company would have to pay for the newspapers, depending on how many
they were. The size of the newspaper were therefore increased so they were would be
more advertising and content included.

In this learning outcome I will be speaking about The Sun newspaper. The Sun newspaper is
a daily tabloid newspaper that is published within the UK. They newspaper started in 1964
where the publisher Daily Herald, he came up with the name of the newspaper and the
content which is included in it. The newspaper became a tabloid in 1969 after it had been
produced by new publishers at the time. The new publishers of the newspaper are News
group Newspapers. The Sun has been known to have the largest circulation of any
newspaper found in the UK. In the picture below, it describes the readership figures for The
Sun newspaper from May 2015, the average readership from the newspaper was 1,809,240
which has decreased by -1.25. This would imply that the readership from The sun has
decreased by the year 2015.
News Corporation
The Sun is a red top tabloid newspaper which is under the ownership
of news corporation. The news corporation are an American
international mass media group headquartered in New York City. They
were announced as the fourth largest media group in 2014. The Sun
newspaper has long appealed to the stereotypical “white van man”
readership which was used within the UK as people thought the
newspaper would only appeal to white men who drive a van everyday.
These men have come across to the public as “Selfish” and
“Inconsiderate” people who are mostly working class and aggressive.
The stereotype “white van man” connotes a D-E person who would
have an manual labour job, for example a plumber.
http://www.sirc.org/publik/white_van_man.html
News Selection
Throughout 'The Sun' newspaper, they have covered a
particular range of stories in order to attract one audience type.
The picture denoted on the right is an example where they have
covered “soft” news within it to imply what the newspaper overall
likes to publicize events about celebrities. The main heading for
the Lead Story (a pun) “Price Fighter” implies that the
newspaper is trying to relate to popular celebrities and their lives
through basic language devices such as a pun. On the other
hand, 'The Sun' has produced a secondary lead with the title of
“Mum’s terror in jihadist hellhole” where the newspaper has
spoken about a serious event (Hard news) that has happened in
the world. This news selection would also demonstrate that they
tend to focus on stories that are less important compared to a
serious event that has great ‘magnitude’ (Galtung & Ruge)
The second picture is from 'The Sun' newspaper's
website, where I have taken a screen shot of an
online story which has been published from the
newspaper. The verbal code of the headline
“Britain’s first Pokemon go murder” connotes that
the newspaper uses tragic events that has
happened in the world today, whereas on the print
based version of the newspaper, they only publish
about celebrities instead of serious events.
Codes and Conventions-Denotation and
Connotation of the Newspaper
Masthead-the Masthead
background is the colour red
to possibly catch the readers
attention, as the colour is
bold and stands out. The
name 'The Sun' could
connote that the newspaper
releases their newspapers
early in the morning
meaning they will get
delivered at an early time for
readers. This is good
because it shows that the
newspaper is dedicated and
follows a system.
Display advert-the display
advert is placed on the top part
of the front cover in order to
attract readers. The newspaper
has used the colour blue as the
background as It is a bright
colour and it also fits with the
theme, they have used the
saying “All in sun sport” as the
title. They have also placed
some football players in order to
attract the male industry to the
magazine. They have used that
particular title because it will be
talking about sports, also the
colour blue links to this because
it is a football colour.
Lead story-the lead story is called “My heart stopped for 40 second” this is a very heart
warming title as they have used a baby in the picture. This could connote that they were
trying to attract older people to read the newspaper and viewers that are curious about
the events that happen in peoples lives and would be interested reading about a life or
death experience.
Sunday the 26th of
February 2012
Main image-on this
newspaper of 'The Sun' the
main image is placed on the
bottom part of the newspaper.
The main image is a picture of
a women and her baby, the
image could be appealing for
older people as it is quite heart
warming for the audience. This
would link to the headline “My
heart stopped for 40 seconds”
this headline is pointed at the
image as it links to the baby
the women is carrying, this
would be very heart warming
to the audience as it was a
miracle the baby survived.
The Copy-the purpose of “the copy” is to introduce the story so the readers will know what it is
about before even reading this. This will get readers curious to know what is next about the story
that is published within the front cover.
News Values (Galtung &
Ruge) –
The front cover from 'The
Sun' would be categorized
into “Consequences,
Unpredictability and Human
interest” this is because the
front cover is very heart
warming which affects the
reader emotionally.
Secondary lead
Within this Front cover of 'The Sun'
newspaper, they have included a
secondary lead which has been placed on
the bottom left hand side of the page, with
the title “Hospital deaths: Nurse is Charged”
this would encourage readers to read the
magazine because as well as publishing
stories about celebrities, they also include
serious events that have happened in the
world. This would demonstrate that 'The
Sun' are dedicated to publishing stories that
their audience enjoy and would be
interested in.
Denotation and Connotation of a
Newspaper Double Page Spread
Headline-the headline of
this newspaper is “Battle
for Britain” which could
imply that something bad
has happened and would
be considered important at
this moment of time. this
would attract the reader
because the sun have
written it in a bold font and
used big letters, This
would connote that it will
be the very first thing the
reader will notice and
automatically have an
attraction to it.
Page number-the page number is located in the top right hand corner of the page, this
will be the same for any newspaper ever published. This is useful for readers so they will
be able to remember what is spoke about and what information is shown on each page.
News Values- the news value
(Currency/Continuity/Running
Story) because it fits in well
because the title “Battle for
Britain) explains an event that
is continuous and has been
going on for days/weeks or
even months.
Technological
Convergence-this is
located at the very bottom
of the page, it is a way to
make readers aware to
follow the sun on different
types of social medias so
you wont ever miss when
the newspaper is going to
be released or miss any
drama that is going to be
featured in the newspaper.
The copy-this is located at the bottom of
the newspaper where it the reader a clue
about what the newspaper is going to be
talking about in the articles, this will make
the reader interested because it will make
the reader want to read more about it.
Statistics-this is the column which is
located on the left top corner of every
front page on a newspaper double
page spread.
Denotation and Connotation of a
Newspaper Double Page Spread
Main image-the
main image is
centered in then
middle of the
double page
spread, it is
usually big in
order for the
reader to
automatically see
it. This could also
connote that it is
of high importance
so the reader will
know exactly what
the articles are
going to be about.
Captions- on the main image,
they would usually be a caption
so readers will know what
exactly it is about. This will
make readers understand what
exactly the article is about
before they read it.
Opinions- within
the article, every
double page spread
of a newspaper has
a column at the side
of the double page
spread where it
expresses the
opinions of the sun
and what people
over all think of the
newspaper.
Associated images-
these images relate to
the overall news story
that has been talked
about. This is to
demonstrate to the
reader an idea about
what it is going to be
talking about.
Opening invitation-this is an article which is
found in the middle of the page, the publisher
has done this in order for it to relate to the main
article of the double page spread.
News Values-'The Sun' double page
spread would be categorized into
“Unpredictability, Running story and
Conflict” because the news story is
going to carry on for a long time as it
is a shocking event.
On the 16th page of the sun's newspaper, they
have put an advertisement which was
originally by the mobile company three. The
sun have done this in order to promote the
mobilising service and to also make people
aware by paying for the newspaper, they will
receive different type of advertisements which
will help their everyday lives. An example of a
visual code for this advertisement would be
that they have used colours to possibly attract
younger people. They have also used the
mobile company logo to ‘inform’ (Katz) the
readers where they can go to to receive this
information. In the middle of the page it was
the words “we love data” with a heart for “love”
is again trying to attract a young audience and
by also using colour this would attract more
younger readers to consider reading the
newspaper fully because of the different
advertisements and what the newspaper offers
overall.

Advertised products-relationship
between the Advertiser and publisher
Advertised Products: Relationship
Between the Advertiser and publisher
This is another advertisement I found within the sun newspaper,
this is located on the 18th page of the newspaper. This
advertisement is based mainly on television as the company
“Virgin Atlantic” which is a network where viewers can watch all the
latest movies, TV shows and many more at a reasonable price.
The advertisement has many appealing interests about it, for
example they have shown pictures of what films and TV shows that
will be included in each package no matter which one the reader
may choose. This will attract readers as they wont have to pay a
lot to receive these shows, this would mean that as well as
advertising their own newspaper, they are also advertising other
products. This will make the newspaper more popular and known
to the public eye. within this advertisement is how they have used
the colour red in order to attract readers, they have done this
because the colour red is very bold and appealing which means
readers will notice it straight away once they have seen it. Overall
this advertisement is mainly used to make people aware of this
company and to also increase their popularity as well as their own
newspaper.
Demographics of The Sun
Throughout my research for 'The Sun' newspaper, I have calculated the
age group, gender and lifestyle. For the age group within the
newspaper, in the picture below, it shows the age group of the sun. it is
clear that people over the age of 20 are more likely to read newspapers
than younger people, this is because usually younger people use social
media to find out any information they would want to know. The
telegraph in the picture shows that people over the age of 30 seem to
read their newspaper unlike the sun where they have a younger
audience. This could be because the sun has different features and
information which would attract young people. According to Katz Uses
& Gratifications for The Sun newspaper is fitted into the category of
‘inform and educate’ where the audience of 'The Sun' will learn
something by reading the information that is provided for example
readers could be reading about an article where they could possibly
learn something about a particular event within the news story.
According to Hartley’s seven subjectivities', the age group for the
newspaper is aimed at 20-45 year Old's, secondly the gender for the
magazine is also aimed at mainly male readers. The demographics and
socio economics for The Sun would fit into the group D and E
because it is mainly for people that enjoy reading about the latest news
that is provided about celebrities. For psychographics, 'The Sun' would
fit into the category of ‘Reformers’ because they use selected products
for the quality from the layout of the newspaper and what is included.
Lastly, According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, the newspaper
would be categorized as ‘survivors’ because they like a routine and what
to know when the newspaper will be produced every month.

audiences-newspaper-old-demographics-
advertising
In the picture at the bottom, it shows the readership for a variety
of newspapers such as the daily mail. The readership for the sun
is 5,599,00 the number has decreased since 2014 as more
people seem to rely on social media to receive the latest
information about the news.
In the second picture below, it denotes the gender percentage for
'The Sun' and many other newspapers. It is clearly shown that more
male readers read the sun than females, this could be because
adult males seem to take an interest in newspaper unlike females
would probably prefer magazines as they have colourful pages and
pictures which would relate to the articles.
E-Media Platform Promotion
The Sun newspaper uses many different types of media platforms in order to make their newspaper more known to
people. For example they have created a Facebook and Twitter page and a Youtube channel in order to publicise the
newspaper. This will also keep readers up to date on the information the newspaper is going to be providing each time it
is published for to the public eye. These types of social is an overall way in order to advertise the newspaper on the
latest stories and well known information. The newspaper has created these pages so it will be more accessible for
readers as social media is a popular way to receive information this day and age. It is also a good idea and a way for
readers to connect with the newspaper, for example they can ask any questions, state their opinions or comment about
the newspaper, they can also talk to other people that might share the same interests on the subject.
Furthermore the sun has a you tube channel with 14,074 people that have subscribed to it, the channel is to keep
readers updated and involved about the events of the newspaper. Viewers can also leave comments in the comment
section just below the videos the sun has made, this way they can give feedback about what they think about the
newspaper and how they can improve it as a whole.
Throughout my research for the sun newspaper, I have found a TV that was published on the 5th
of January 2016, the advert is based on home deliveries from the sun newspaper. At the start of
the video, you can see that it is set in a house which is linked to “home delivery” you can then see
a clock with the time set to “05 59” you can then hear a voice that is talking about mornings and
explaining that the sun newspaper will deliver at any time of day. They are saying this in order to
advertise the newspaper as a whole, this will then get readers interested into purchasing a copy of
the newspaper considering it will directly be delivered to their door. Within the advert, they have
shown a phone number which is there throughout the advert. They also have a website where
readers can go visit in order to purchase their copies from the sun. in the middle of the video, you
can then see people from the house that are quickly rushing around In order to get to work. The
advert is trying to basically say to people that even if your in a rush, you will still be able to
purchase a copy of the newspaper.
Advertising to Consumers: TV Advert Example
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pQ6NuD7aIc
The video
lasts for 30
seconds, this
would identify
it as a TV
advert as it is
not very long
the video has 495
views, this has been
an increase from the
poster as more
people look online
about their
information they
want to find.
Within the video, you can also share the video
so that more people will see it and might even
purchase a copy of the newspaper.
Within my research for the sun, I have looked into the pricing of the newspaper, for example
the newspaper currently is increasing its price by 10p but the overall price depends on firstly
what day the reader would want to purchase a copy. For example on Sundays it is increased
by 20p, which would mean that The Sun on Saturday will now cost 70p and on Sunday will
be £1. The newspaper has many features for it to be within a pricing range, for example the
size, position and the price overall. Firstly the price tells the reader how much the whole
newspaper is and what it consists of within each page, for example the newspaper includes
many different advertisements to attract readers. The advertisements within the newspaper
are there for readers to look at and to possibly take interest from the offer they are receiving.
Below are some examples of different page advertisements, such as half page, 25x4 and full
page. There are many different types of layouts publishers can make in order for the
advertisement to come across more appealing and known, this will also advertise these
companies and make the newspaper more appealing to people.

The Sun Website Analysis
This is the main home page for the sun newspaper, you can see
the navigation bar, advertisements and some images to support
the newspaper overall. On this page, they have firstly used the
navigation bar to divide each page into sections, for example
readers can visit their sport page and see what the newspaper is
publishing about sports and many other different pages they
provide on the website, this would imply that the newspaper are
using exclusive content. Secondly they have used different
colours to often represent different things for example, they have
produced the background to be the colour blue because it stands
out to the audience and could represent a sports team colour.
This could possibly make the reader aware that they have many
different types of content and a whole range of stories to
produce. At the top of the page it offers the readers with a search
bar for them to explore what the newspaper is all about, this is a
positive idea because then each reader might find something
they are interested in, this allows readers to explore each story.
On the home page you can see different types of advertisements
which are located all over the page so readers will know different
offers where different companies have to offer for a reasonable
price. On the right hand side of the page, they have smaller
articles where readers can comment on and leave their opinions
about the topic that is being discussed. Overall the home page is
very appealing to readers where they can find all sorts of
information and interesting offers to receive about the
newspaper.

The Sun Website Analysis-Contact Us
On the website of 'The Sun' newspaper, they also have a “contact us” page where it provides readers with information about
contacting the newspaper if they have any concerns or issues. On the page they provide you with a phone number and an email
address where they can contact the newspaper personally. They also have a page that goes directly to where people have asked
different questions about the newspaper. they have also featured an advertisement that provides readers with a choice in order to
receive the newspaper online, tablet, phone and PC. This will allow readers to access any articles or information about the newspaper
on any device they are on. Readers can also publish their own stories/articles in order for other people to read them. There is
evidence of “citizen journalism” (Gillmor-2004) in the ‘Contact Us’ section which allows readers to send their stories to a journalist
so they can read them, if they are good enough they will be published online for people to see it, there will also be a comment section
where other people can give feedback about the article overall.
The Sun Website Analysis-Editorial Complaints
Within the newspaper, there is a way where for
readers to make a complaint about the
magazine if they are not happy about something
or if they have any concerns about the
newspaper overall. They will be able to contact
using 'The Sun' website by using a complaint
policy where readers can make a complaint
about about any concerns they may have. 'The
Sun' aims to handle a complaint in a reasonable
way as they wouldn’t want to have a bad
reputation from their newspaper. Readers can
make a complaint using the IPSO website, they
will also receive feedback from someone at
within the newspaper. 'The Sun' aims to
respond as quickly as they can in order for the
issue to be solved, this will encourage readers
to be more open about their opinions of the
newspaper overall. If the complaint hasn’t been
answered within 28 working days then the issue
has automatically be resolved. The sun
encourages readers to have a good experience
with the newspaper in order it to become more
known popular to the public.

Editors code of practice
Vs.
‘The Hillsborough Disaster’ (15 April 1989) was originally covered in a rather ‘negative’ (Galtung & Ruge)
manner and the newspaper were heavily criticized for sensationalizing the story to create controversy.
The lead story from the issue on the right sometime later establishes how the newspaper neglected their
expected ‘Accuracy’ when reporting the news, which is highlighted through the verbal code of “We are
profoundly sorry for false reports”.
Press Complaints Commission
When producing and publishing the Newspaper, the first thing about the editors code
is to make sure that the Newspaper is of high standards when it comes to the making
of the Newspaper and making sure that every page is professorially laid out. This will
include the content and how the company will be able to handle readers information
that is provided so that the Newspaper will be able to handle the situation in a
reasonable manner.
Overall the information in the editors code must be applied into the Newspaper that
is created from the Newspaper development. This will include both printed and
online punishments so readers won't miss an issue of the Newspaper. This would
mean that the editors can check through the information that is created by the
publishers so that they can make sure that the content is published professionally
within the editors codes instructions.

Accuracy
The editors code is responsible to ensure that all content that is going to be published
within the newspaper is suitable and is going to be featured on the front cover and
double page spread. These will be featured in the newspaper in order to attract readers
to read it. The editors code have to make sure that everything that is published is
“accurate” meaning that there is no spelling mistakes or inaccurate information such as
information about certain artists that are going to be featured in it. By following the
editors code, this will grant them high quality of information that will be published in
the newspaper and will also maintain the layout. This will repeat certain things such as
the logo and strapline. Overall accuracy will be used throughout the newspaper and will
follow the editors code which will ensure that the content that will be released is
accurate.
Privacy
For the newspaper front cover and double page spread, I will have to gain permission from
the person that will be featured in the newspaper so that it can be published. To make
sure that the editors of the newspaper will gain permission, they will have to directly
contact the person that they would like to feature in it, they could possibly do this by
email in order for them to gain permission to take their photograph.
Conclusion
In conclusion, in this leaning outcome I have been studying advertisements of a magazine
and newspaper. I have been analysing Q magazine, the sun newspaper and the daily mail.
Firstly I started to look at print based product advertisements within the magazine and
newspaper, I have analysed different products within these and talked about how they give
the newspaper and magazine more popularity for young people and adults.
Secondly I started looking at the magazine and newspaper front covers and double page
spreads and I have analysed the different connotations and denotations of these. I have
done this to order to understand different parts of the magazine and newspaper so I will be
able to become more confident of media products within these resources.
Furthermore I have looked into the demographics of the newspaper 'The Sun', I have
achieved this by looking into the readership and age groups of the newspaper so readers will
understand where the newspaper stands today. I will continue to repeat this process in the
future where I have a general and professional idea of print based products.
Mind Map-Alternative Idea
Target audience-the target
audience for Mojo magazine is
targeted at adults that are
interested in classical rock music
magazines. The magazine
focuses on the genre of their
music and where the magazine is
represented through the content
and appearance. Mojo would
feature a more older and wider
band artists which would attract
older people to the magazine.
Images- on the front cover
of Mojo magazine it shows
the main image that is
linked to the main cover
line. It has a medium close
up of the women in the
image , the artist is wearing
heavy make up and as the
genre of the magazine is
classical music which links
to the fact that she is
representing classical
music.
Colour scheme- the colour
scheme of mojo magazine
involves very bold colours such
as gold and black. These colours
stand out very well against the
background in order to catch the
readers attention. The colours
used are quite eye catching as
the reader will start to notice the
colour scheme.
Brand identity-the specific
features shown within the
magazine are self
advertised which is
described through personal
articles about the artist.
Frequency of realise-
mojo magazine produces
magazines on a monthly
basis, the total circulation
of Mojo magazine of June
2013 is 79,345 and you
can also subscribe to it
online which you can save
70%.
Images of inspiration-throughout my generation of ideas, I
have included images of inspiration that will help advertise
the magazine. This will encourage readers to purchase it as
they will have an idea what the magazine is going to be
about. I have included a front cover and double page spread
of Mojo magazine that will interest readers to the magazine.
Mind Map-Final Idea
Generation
of Ideas
Colour scheme-the colour’s of Q
magazine consist of red, blue, white and
black. The colour red connotes
excitement and mystery, this would
demonstrate that the magazine would
encourage explores different types of
colours in order for the reader to see the
colour scheme of the magazine overall.
This would link to my created magazine
because I'm going to use bold and bright
colours such as red, blue black and white
in order to appeal to readers.
Price- the price of Q magazine costs
£3.99, I am going to repeat this by
using a similar price to the created
magazine. As it is an expensive
price, I will also repeat this by using a
similar price because it would
connote to readers that the magazine
is at its best quality.
Frequency of Release- Q magazine is released on a
monthly basis, this is because the magazine is quite
expensive and produces more content for readers as
they have waited a month instead of a week to purchase
a copy of the magazine. This would also link to the
created magazine because it will also be released on a
monthly basis in order to attract readers.
Target Audience- The target audience
of Q magazine are aimed at young
people and adults from the ages of 25.
The genre of Q magazine is electric
which is going to be the same with my
created magazine because it would be
aimed at the same target audience
meaning within the same age group.
Images- on the front cover of Q
magazine it shows the artist Florence
and the machine. The magazine used
this particular artist because she is a
popular music artist which would attract
more people to read it. I am going to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale – 1980) this
during the making of the magazine I'm
going to be creating by using a popular
artist on the front cover to attract more
people to read it. I will use a clos up
image of the artist to demonstrate to
readers that it is an important part of
the magazine.
Brand identity-specific features that are
shown for Q magazine are self
advertisement’s that appeals through
articles and the artist. This would link to the
created magazine because it will be known
from social media that would include
personal articles about the artist.

When creating this mood, I have chosen
inspiring images from particular artists and social

things will be featured in the magazine and what

TECHNICAL CONVERGENCE
IMAGE OF
ARTIST
The masthead is the title of the
magazine and as you can see there is a
red box with the letter Q in white
writing.
Another convention of a
Magazine cover is the main
image. The denotation of the
main image is “Florence and The
Machine” which connotes “star
appeal” (Richard Dyer). The
technical code of the close up of
Florence grabs the readers
attention as the front cover is
mainly focusing on her.
The visual codes on the front cover such
as the pale blue dashes and bullet points
are other conventions, the bullet points
in the cover line interest the reader
through the brief summary and
therefore they would want to read more.
The strapline is placed underneath
the masthead, where the strapline
denotes “Discover great music”
which connotes inside this
magazine there will be new and
updated information about the
music industry and the audience
will be able to “Discover” this by
buying and reading the magazine.
On the left and right hand side of the
page, there are coverlines which is
information about what is inside of the
magazine, for example “16 page Gig”.
Coverlines are an insight to the audience
about what they can read.
The barcode contains the
date, issue number and price,
furthermore there is usually a
web address (technical
convergence) which allows
the audience to view the
magazine online.
The main story is featured at
the top, where the main story
anchors the image. The verbal
code “I feel so alone” connotes
that this will be an interesting
story and entices the reader to
want to know what it is about.
Front Cover Analysis - Inspiration
Main Image - in this double
page spread, Florence is
looking directly at the
reader which suggests that
she is inviting the readers
into the article.
In the main article of the double page spread, the drop
capital is used to catch the readers attention at the
beginning of the text. The Font style is bold to try and
make the readers interested in the Magazine. The
purpose of the drop capital is to signal the reader where
to begin.
This article is in columns which implies the
conventions of a double page spread and
this is also usually a interview that is in
columns.
This heading is very
appropriate because
it is a line of one of
Florence's number
one singles. The bold
front stands out to
get the readers
attention as the front
is different from the
others in this article
The colour red is an
extremely bold colour and
suggests passion and fire
which could connote the
artists passion for music
The stand first is the
introduction for the
interview, this gives
the reader an insight
on what the interview
or column is about
and allows them to
decide if they want to
read it or not.
Credits- this writing states
who wrote the article and
who took pictures.
Usually in an interview on a
double page spread, there is a
pull quote which is a quote
from the artist pulled out of
the interview. This is usually a
quote that is interesting,
making the audience want to
read the interview.
Double page spread Analysis - Inspiration
Front cover
Within the magazine front cover for Q magazine, they have many features, the main feature they use is the Main
image which provides the reader with a back story of what the magazine will be like. The magazine overall
starts off with the masthead which is placed on the top left hand corner of the front cover, this will show readers
it is Q magazine where according to Steve Neale’s research they are going to repeat the masthead on every
page of the magazine where they will demonstrate consistency. Secondly they have placed an image they are
using in the centre of the page where they have enlarged it to over lap the written information and masthead.
The magazine usually uses a picture of a popular artist in order to encourage ‘star appeal’ to the reader. They
have then used a puff promotion which is placed on the top right hand corner, this provides readers with a
promotion where they could either enter a contest to receive something free or maybe a discount on the
subscription service within the magazine. The magazine then would place the cover lines on each side of the
page in order to advertise different artists that are being featured in the magazine, they also provide something
from the articles which are found inside. Lastly they use the title which is placed at the bottom of the page which
they use the name of the artist that is featured on the front cover in order to increase their chances of a reader
buying the magazine.
Double page spread
Within the magazine Double page spread for Q magazine, they have many features in order for the reader to
take interest in, for example they have the main image which is placed on the left side of the page, they have
chosen to place it here in order for the reader to see it straight away when they turn the page. The image is also
a way for the reader to get an idea about what the interview or articles are about. Secondly they have placed the
interview on the other side of the page to show they are thinking clearly about what kind of layout they want to
use. Following this, they also use a drop capital at the start of every interview to catch readers attention by using
a different font and size to make it look professional. Thirdly the magazine have placed a pull quote that is linked
to the interview so again readers will understand what was spoken about. Lastly the magazine uses credits on
the double page spread so the reader will know who produced it, this will encourage readers to know more
about the magazine overall.
Layout of the magazine
Stereotypes
The age group for Sound magazine is mainly aimed at 15-24 year old's, the gender for
the magazine is aimed at both male and female readers. The demographics and socio
economics for Sound would fit into the group D and E because it is mainly for people
that enjoy multiple music genres which means it wouldn’t be upper class compared to
other magazines. Sound magazine is fitted into the category of ‘inform and educate’
where the audience will learn something by reading the information for example readers
could be reading about an article and they could possibly learn something about within
the article they are reading.
The stereotypical areas of interest for this readership would be:
Casual clothing
Production Legal and Ethical Issues
Before my magazine can be published to the public, there are some legal and ethical issues that
have to be investigated before doing so. Two of these are to publish the organization so that it is
professional, this will also include privacy to label accuracy.
Copyright- the legal right to be the only one to produce, publish and sell a book, a video
or anything on social media that has been created or brought out to the public. an
example of this would be brochures, books and other things on social media that would
be considered copyrighted. For Sound magazine, I am going to use copyright by using
pictures of a particular artist or band member. By using different images, they will have
to therefore ask the company for permission in order to use the image.
The right to privacy- publishing content about different people, it is important to regulate people’s
privacy and what they purchase on the internet. In order to make sure of this, I will have to ask the
people for their permission to feature on my magazine.
Seditious and Criminal Libel- this is when something that is released on the internet is considered
offensive to the government and the people of the public. Criminal Libel is published information that
is released about someone that is considered negative to the public and which would create a
reputation for that person or company.
Trademarking the Magazine
Trademarking the name of the magazine
In Sound, the designer team will ensure that the name we have chosen, slogan
and logo is trademarked under the ‘intellectual property’’ law. The cost of the
trade marketing will cost £170.
Mention considerations (copyrighting the name and logo)
How you did this
1-the first step you will need to do if you want to trademark the name of the
magazine is to firstly register your trade mark online to protect the brand. When

House Style of the magazine - SOUND
When creating different for Q I
thought it was important to
include the details of the
house styles and colours in
which I will use on my created
magazine. In each of my
proposals there was an outline
on what is going to be
included in the magazine and
the features such as colour
schemes and logos.
Masthead
When deciding on the masthead for
the magazine I thought I would
have it similar to the colour scheme
and similar to my magazine of
inspiration which is Q magazine
and I will also use similar colours to
Q such as the colour red. I will use
other colours like black and blue to
create my masthead. I will use
effects such as make the masthead
stand out and look professional in
my magazine.

Sound
As shown below there is my front
for both my masthead and the
official name of my magazine
which is called Sound.
Colour scheme
For Q the house style is the colour scheme,
whereby they have chosen the colours to be
bright dark red, black and blue. The red will
connote to the readers that I am taking ideas
from my magazine of inspiration and also the
how professional they have laid out the
magazine. the colour scheme will be continued
on every page of the magazine.
House Style of the magazine
Synergy with social media
I am going to be using synergy with other social media products within
Sound magazine for example I am going to promote the magazine on
Facebook and twitter so readers can be updated when the magazine is
going to be published and who it is going to feature.
Strapline language
The strapline language for Sound magazine is “UK’s best selling magazine”
this will encourage readers towards the magazine as it promotes the
magazine’s title. This will therefore attract readers as it is going to be
promoted as a future magazine.
Use of social media in the magazine
Within Sound magazine, I am going to be using different types of social media for example
Facebook and Twitter. Within Facebook, they give permission for users to use content that is
posted by other users that are on Facebook. It would also include identification such as names
and profile photos, this will enable users to know who you are. Facebook provide their logo
where it provides assets to a limited size where it is placed as the brand identity of the website.
Within sound magazine, I am going to use the identification of the brand name so it will be
known to readers. Facebook do not not trademarks as they don’t want it to readers to be
confused by the brand. Within sound magazine I am going to be using trademarks sound
magazine will not be copyrighted by any other company that would like to use it without
permission. In order to keep the brand logo aware to the readers, I will need to make sure it is
not over lapping with the other assets in order to keep it professional. Facebook doesn’t have
any licenses to any trademarks it provides, for example logos or intellectual property for the use
of merchandise. When creating sound magazine, I am going to provide trademarks for both the
logo and merchandise which is included.
The twitter logo symbolises what is happening around the world, they have used the colour blue
within the outline of a bird, in order for the logo to be placed, it must be 150% of place between
the width of the logo to ensure it is at its best quality. They have chosen the colour blue to
represent twitter as it is a colour that represents the world and what is happening within it. When
using icons within twitter, they use either white or blue to represent their brand where I will need
to use an equal bit of space between the height and width of the logo so it will maintain it's
quality. Twitter use variations within their social media product where they are representing
each tweet that is being posted, twitter advises users to use as much content as possible which
will enable it to build association to twitter.
https://brand.twitter.com/logo
https://en.facebookbrand.com
Twitter Trademarks
In order to create a trademark, I will need to follow steps in order to make it official
1-i will firstly need to not alter the trademark for example changing the size of colour as it will
loose it's quality
2-all the twitter trademarks must appear individually as it would look more professional to the
audience.
3-the trademarks must not be placed anywhere where text is shown as it would interfere with
the content of the product.
4-twitter trademarks are not to be used within sponsorships without any sort of permission or a
license from twitter.
5-you are not allowed to use twitter's trademarks in a negative way where it would affect the
product and it's services.
6-users are not allowed to use twitter trademarks to refer to any type of social media other than
twitter, users must only retweet tweet that are linked by twitter products.
7-when you are creating a product that is linked by twitter, you will have to choose a unique
name so other users will not be confused by confused by twitter and the product name.
8-users must know all all the rights of the twitter trademarks and the property of twitter which
will be generated through the social media product.
Genre of the Magazine
The denotation of Q Magazine’s genre is eclectic, it
is confirmed as eclectic because it has a range of
genres, this is because Q magazine is aimed at
young people and adults that are interested in a
specific genres.
The slogan “the worlds greatest music Magazine”
suggests that it is trying to attract readers by using
interesting language, for example formal and
informal language to attract young people and adult
audiences. The magazine is trying to convince
readers that if you read the magazine it is the
greatest and you can’t beat it.
Magazine Masthead/logo
When creating my masthead/logo for the magazine, I have done this in order for readers to
know what the magazine is called and what logo is used to represent it. Furthermore, I
needed to make sure that logo was similar to my magazine of inspiration which is Q to show
readers it was my inspired magazine. I have used the colours red, blue, white and black
which is similar to Q magazine as I want to base the magazine through Q magazine. The
colour black connotes mystery and darkness, this will make the readers interested because it
gives it a sense of mystery when reading my magazine. The colour red connotes excitement
as the readers won’t expect what is going to be in the magazine.
House style consistency- While looking for fonts and colour choices of the magazine, I
have decided to constantly use different features by using different types of fonts that I
have chosen. I have also decided to place the logo on each page to show that the
magazine is consistent throughout. I will be doing this so readers will find the magazine
appealing and will know the brand.
Target audience for both
magazines
Before looking at the needs of my own
magazine ‘Sound’ and ‘Volume’ I
wanted to look at its magazine of
inspiration ‘Q’ magazine. By doing so I
could look at where Q magazine are
losing relationship and thinking of new
and better ideas to use in my magazine
“Sound”.
At Hartley's 7 subjectivities this chart
connotes that the percentage of
readers that are aged 15-24 years old.
The target audience and relationship of Q
magazine would be according to the socio-
economic need chart has a high percentage of
readers. This means that the magazine is very
popular and draws in the attention of the
readers to read Q magazine.
According to Maslow, Sound and VOLUME
magazine is fitted into the category of “survivors”
because it will know that the readers will know
when the magazine will be published and what
information it will be receiving.
According to Katz, Sound and VOLUME
magazine is fitted into the category of ‘inform
and educate’ meaning that everything they will
read will give them different information about
the magazine.
Target Audience for SOUND
According to Sound, it would fit into the category of
personal identification for Katz because the audience of
Sound magazine would relate to the artist and the
information being produced of that particular artist
For Hartley category, the age group of Sound magazine
would fit into 16-25 year olds that are interested, it will be
for both genders but mainly females and finally for class, it
would fit into the category of young working class students,
which means that Sound is targeted at young people that
have working jobs.
Finally for Maslow, Sound would fit into the category of
‘Explorers’ which means that the readers of Sound
magazine will experience reading something different every
week when it is published.
Target Audience for SOUND
According to the psychographics table, the target
audience for Sound would fit into the category of
‘Reformers’ because Sound’s target audience
would like to be aware of each artist that is going
to be published each month for viewers to read,
also the audience would select products of Sound
magazine that were at top quality. Also the
target audience would be also aimed at
‘strugglers’ as they seek escape and the people in
the C1and C2 within Q magazine as their
audience is at a higher class.
that Sound magazine was inspired from. Lastly
the target audience would be ‘Aspirers’ because
Sound magazine is related to younger people
who seek status which therefore they would be
interested in Sound magazine because it would
seek a lower status which means young viewers
would more likely be interested.

convention
Magazine Colours
When deciding the magazine fonts for my magazine, I had to be very
specific when using the font because it will effect the way the magazine
is presented. I have chosen specific fonts because my magazine is
aimed at the higher end of the market when it comes to a variety of
people.
I have chosen several fonts that will be used in my magazine. there is a
large range of fonts that are easier to read than others when sized
differently. For the main text of my magazine which is going to be the
same because it shows that there is consitantency throughout my
magazine and it prevents it from looking messy and un-professional,
other fonts such as “neon 80s” are going to be used in my magazine
because they are easier to read and will have a smaller font size,
furthermore I would concentrate on using these type of fonts in the
article of my magazine.
This is my first
proposal for
“Sound”
magazine which
shows the
format, working
title, content,
style or approach,
audience, the
length of the
magazine and the
frequency of how
much it will cost
This is my second
proposal for
“Volume”
magazine, it
includes format,
working title,
genre, content,
style and
approach of the
magazine, the
audience for
example if it is
aimed at
teenagers or
adults, the length
of the magazine
for example how
many pages it
will have and the
frequency such
as the price of
the magazine.
Spending Power
For “Sound” magazine, the target
audience will be mainly aimed at young
people and teenagers following the
power It will have compared to Q
magazine. I have chosen Q magazine to
be my magazine of inspiration because
it produces similar content to what I will
be using within Sound magazine.
When looking at the table from the Bauer media pack, I have analysed that Q magazine
readers are aged between 16-24 years of age. This will be similar to “sound” because
there are some features and content that will be the same as Q which will be aimed at a
similar age group. this is in reference to Hartley's seven ‘subjectives’ because it
demonstrates that I have used age, gender and other theories that would be considered
spending power from the magazine.
First front cover Hand Drawn Drafts
Magazine Logo- I have chosen to
place my magazine logo on the left
top corner of the front cover, I have
chosen this in particular as it will be
easy for readers to see as it will be
eye catching. I have been inspired
to put the magazine logo in this
particular place because of Q
magazine, this is because It is my
magazine of inspiration. I have
chosen these colours on the
magazine logo because Q magazine
has a red logo, I have then got the
idea of using the same colour. .
Main story- I have decided to place my
main story on the right hand side of the
front cover because I thought that
readers will notice it straight away as it is
close to the main image, this will
encourage readers to buy it. The main
story will have a clear view of the
magazine logo and the main image. I
was inspired by Q magazine to place it in
this particular area, other Q magazines
have this in the same place, this will
show I am following my magazine of
inspiration.
Puff promotion- when placing the puff
promotion on the top left hand corner, I
have chosen to place it in this particular
place because it is similar to my
magazine of inspiration which is Q
magazine. I thought about placing it here
because it will attract readers to the
magazine. This will also encourage the
reader to buy the magazine as it features
what is going to be inside and who the
main story is about.
Magazine layout- when creating the
hand drawn drafts for my magazine,
I wanted to make sure that they look
professional and eye catching for the
reader to see, this will more likely
attract the reader to read the
magazine. I wanted to carefully think
about where I wanted to place
certain things such as the masthead
and the puff promotion. In order to
do this I have looked at my
magazine of inspiration which is Q
magazine and followed a similar
layout so readers will know it is my
magazine of inspiration.
Article feature- on this hand drawn
draft, I was aiming to include content
about popular artists in order to
catch the readers attention. Then I
will make the title of the pages
smaller in order for the readers to
know more about the content of the
magazine and what it has to offer.
First double page spread hand drawn draft
Main image- I created this double page spread by looking at my magazine of inspiration which
is Q magazine, I thought it was a good idea for the image to be a big part of the double page
spread. This will be eye catching to the reader and will be the first thing the reader sees, I then
positioned the masthead just above the main image to again attract the readers attention.
Information about
the artist- this
includes specific
information that
readers would like to
know about the artist,
which includes
information about who
they are and how they
got famous and why
they are popular to
the public.
Article images- on this
double page spread, I will
be including smaller images
to represent the main image
and to tell the reader abit
about what they will be
reading. Also the smaller
images can refer back to
the article which readers
could find interesting, this
will also encourage the
reader to read the article
and find out what it is about.
Interview- I have placed the interview in columns, as you can see in this double page
spread, I have done this make it more interesting for the reader. An interview in a magazine
is personal information about the artist and their life, this will encourage readers to find out
more about the artist that they like and admire. I have also placed it in columns because it will
seem like a build up for the reader, I have used questions and answers in the interview to
show that it is professionally laid out and tells readers information about the artist.
Interview Draft Planning
For my double page spread within the magazine, I am going to construct an interview with
a well known artist. I have chosen the artist “Florence and the Machine” as well as
featuring her in the double spread for my magazine. she will also be featured on the main
headline, this will attract the audience as she is popular and well known to the public. I
have chosen to interview “Florence and the machine” because she is a well known artist
and has been in the music industry for a very long time, she has been a great success in
the music industry and has made a great impact on people today. Florence has made
three up coming albums and nearly made the top charts in 2013, her recently realised
song “what kind of man” created a very emotional but understanding impact to her fans
and was a great hit when it first came out. the song would draw in readers because they
would recognise Florence on the front cover headline and they would be interested
straight away because she is a very popular and she would get the audiences attention. I
want to interview her because it would create a positive impact on readers and she would
be a great inspiration to both young people and adults.
The presentation of the interview on the double page spread will be laid out as a question
and answer style. This is quite typical in many magazines, it makes it easier for the reader
to understand the information that is being published in the questionnaire.
Interview Draft
Article
FD: Jess Blundell 16, talks new and upcoming album and shares advice to people about
going into a music career.
JB: It’s been great thanks for asking, it was very busy but exciting at the same time.
FD: how do you feel that your new song went at the top of the charts in just a week?
JB: I was really amazed and thankful for my fans support, I found that my song really
inspired my fans and just people in general, sometimes when I have a bad day I think about
how supportive my fans are and then I start to think about the song and how it made people
feel.
FD: So how is your song writing process work?
JB: Well I start off thinking about the song beat then I get some ideas from the people that
help with creating my songs. I do admit they give me inspiration to write songs, they give me
a few ideas that I could use, I think of lyrics for them and then we think of a name for the
song.
FD: So your new album is being realised soon, what can we expect from it?
JB: You can expect a lot of emotion such as happy and sad. I was aiming at getting my
fans to understand the different types of music I create and what the message is in the
song.
FD: Have you learnt any important or tough lessons from your early experiences of the
music industry?
JB: Well it is very hard to get into the music industry, when you get in to it there’s no going
back to a normal person, your automatically known to the public and sometimes it is very
tuff to keep a brave face.
FD: I heard that you sold out your tour, how does that feeling of thousands of people want
to see you and only you feel like?
JB: It’s shocking to be honest; it makes me feel happy that I'm making other people happy
when they listen to my music and its also shocking how thousands of people look up to me
as a person and not just a singer. I try my best to do a lot for my fans as they got me where
I am today.
FD: Thank you Jessica for your time it’s been great talking with you. Do you have any
words of inspiration for your fans that are looking to pursue a music career?
JB: Thank you and my advice to them is to never stop believing in yourself and you will get
there, if your talented at singing then I suggest you keep at it and never stop until you’ve
been noticed by someone.
During my work for
my magazine, I had to

and “Volume”

the interviewer would

the artists would
answer 5 questions.

Before taking images for my magazine front

sure that I had a location in which to take these
images so that I can find the best place to take
them, I have taken this images at a friends

will also imply what type of equipment I will
need so that I can fully take them at the best
quality and it will also make me aware of any
possible risks/hazards that could happen in the
process. Furthermore, I have taken some
images of the equipment that I will be using in
the process in order to take the images, I used a

Production Legal and Ethical
Issues
Discrimination-if an article is published and has signs of discrimination, this would mean they are talking
about an individuals race, colour, religion and gender. Examples of discrimination would be racism,
harassment and many others. This would link to sound magazine because I will make sure that I am not
going to use discrimination when publishing information.
Children- people have to be careful about what they say about children in the media industry and content
that is released about them because they are considered innocent and vulnerable. It is important to use
permission from their parents/parent to use their information on the internet if they are under the age of
18, then the parents or parent will then have to agree to the terms and make sure that they are using
necessary content that is appropriate for the magazine.
Accuracy-content that is published in a magazine must not be inaccurate, this means that the information
they produce such as written information or pictures they use must not be misleading. This means that it
must be accurate and not made up or extended. Furthermore, I need to be accurate in the magazine I am
creating because then I will be giving readers the correct information that they are reading about within
the magazine. This would link to Sound magazine as I will have to make sure I don’t publish any incorrect
information to readers.

http://www.eastspartachurch.com/childrens-mnistry/
Legal and Ethical Issues
Contract Challenges: when looking through the content of the magazine, it goes through a
contract to the organisation so they will only use copyright on the things that they have
created. When the person/people sign the contract, this will then mean they have to stick to it
and it must not be changed in any way possible. This would also mean that they have control
of some of the rights they have made.
Copyright:Intellectual Property-before making the magazine, I had to research legal areas that I
can then be able to use a type of content in my magazine that I will be producing. Using this,
they will have to ask for permission to use particular content so it can be featured in the
magazine and so it will be safe from paying fines.
Privacy-when publishing content into my magazine, I will have to make sure that I limit people's
privacy that will be featured in the magazine. I will have to make sure that I ask for permission
for any personal details that will be featured before I publish the magazine and with the
permission of the person I would like to feature in the magazine. I have to also made sure not
to include anything negative information about that person so the magazine won't have a
negative impact on the readers and public.

When making the magazine, I have to make
sure that I include legal and ethical issues when
dealing with the content that is going to be
featured in the magazine. For example I could
talk about private information from an artist
and I will have to deal with what I say and the
limits. I will then create protection copyright so
that I only use it for my organisation and other

  • 4. Contacting Q magazine: Relationship with the Magazine and consumers Before I carried out my research for Q magazine, I had to contact someone by email that worked for the magazine. I have done this to get information before taking it in mind. I sent an email to Q magazine about the advertising within the magazine and if they could possibly provide me with any information that can be helpful for my research that I am studying. I also have some information on the press pack which I found only advertises Q festivals and other information that I needed for my research. I found that this was more helpful with the information on the Q magazine website which I may need to carry out into investigation.

  • 6. Source: http://magazines.bauermediaadvertising.com/magazines/detail/Q http://www.qthemusic.com/ http://www.emap.com/http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/press/news/article/phil- alexander-now-editor-in-chief-of-q-magazine Source: http://magazines.bauermediaadvertising.com/magazines/detail/Q http://www.qthemusic.com Date of First Publication-Q magazine started in October 1986, the EMAP group were going to call the magazine “cue” with the sub title “The modern guide to music and more” but the audience was firstly confused about the name of the magazine and thought it was a snooker magazine instead of a pop magazine. The EMAP group Later on that year changed the name to the letter “Q” and released it as a monthly magazine, giving readers up to date information about music. Publisher-Q magazine was firstly published by the EMAP group and was then sold to the Bauer media group. The two editors of Q magazine (Mark Ellen and David Hepworth) discussed and thought of the idea about creating a new magazine that has a very large audience group and talks about different types of genres. Associated Products-on the Q magazine website, it supply's you with information such as what the magazine is about, the music, festivals that are coming soon and a subscription of the magazine. It also includes Q radio which first started in the early year of 2008 when the Bauer media group took over the magazine fully. The Bauer media group had to then cancel the broadcast later on that year because they wanted to change their station to kisstory. Source:
  • 7. Q Magazines Form Source: www.qthemusic.com Dimensions/size of Q magazine-on the Q magazine website, I have found that the magazine can do a version where they can either print or use digital for just 30 pounds if you subscribe to the magazine. it depends on the device you use to subscribe to it on because it will have a different view on content, the magazine is 30.6x 22.2 x 1.2cm in size. Print and Digital-Q Magazine publish their magazines through print based and online media, this is implies that it will be easer for their audience to access it and still keep up to date on what the magazine provides. On the Q magazine website, they have subscription services where anyone can subscribe to the magazine for a reasonable price. This will be included for both the the print and the digital versions which are available on the package. This will give readers information which Q magazine provides and will also offer them a number of magazines that will be realised every month for them to read. This would mean every reader that is subscribed to the magazine wont miss out even if Q magazine doesn't’t sell a magazine for one month, the reader that is subscribed will still purchase a copy online.
  • 8. Q Magazine Form Continued Source: www.qthemusic.com Style of Q magazine-Q magazine follow a style throughout the magazine to show their readers that they have a continuous pattern throughout every copy a reader would receive. The magazine have done this by repeating features such as the colour scheme, this will be useful for readers because they will start to know what the magazine is like. Q magazine uses colours such as red, white, black and blue which they continue throughout the magazine so readers will know it is Q magazine.

  • 10. The Magazine Production process Continued Date of publication – Firstly, you set up a data publication. This is when you want the magazine to be released to the public. Music magazines take around 2 months to produce and plan because there is a lot of research to be completed. Managing the schedule- secondly, once the date of the publication has been set up, a schedule will be created. This is because if you want your magazine to be produced effectively then a schedule needs to be made. The pros to a schedule is that if anything changes from the initial plan, there will be an alternative plan. Having this will allow deadlines to be made. Editorial and budgetary decision – this part of the production process is where the editorial team make a decision on what will be included in the magazine, for example articles, competitions, pictures and news stories. After this the team make budgetary decisions, looking at money that is available to them. • 11. The Magazine Production process Sub-editing- the next step which is taken focuses on quality control of the magazine, the person that is usually responsible for this job is the sub editor. This sub editing involves spelling and grammar, mistakes page layout and article facts. Page layout- the editorial team will decide the layout of the magazine. They do this because it allows the reader to read the magazine clearly. Proof reading- this stage is where the first copy of the magazine is developed and will be looked over by the editorial team. For example they will look out for any spelling and layout mistakes, if they find these, a new version will be created and printed. Publication and distribution- once all these processes have been completed, the magazine will be sent out to print and then once printed, it will be distributed to the stores and then to the public.

  • 26. Advertising to Consumers: TV Advert Example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78UVEVzPeX4 Throughout my research of Q magazine, I have found a YouTube advert that promotes the magazine overall. This sort of advertisement is available on social media, the magazine also has a YouTube channel where they keep viewers updated with the latest news and publications of the magazine. At the start of the video you can see the “Q” logo against a white coloured background, the logo is a bold red colour. This is to catch the readers away as it will be the first thing they will see when they click on the video. After, the content of the magazine is then seen in the video with bold lettering and music. The advertisement overall introduces the reader a chance to see what type of content is going to be featured in the magazine. Lastly on the video, you can then see an example of a front cover to demonstrate to viewers what the magazine looks like which also includes the logo so readers will then know it is Q magazine. The video was uploaded on September in 2014, there have been 190 views on the video. The advert has gained popularity when the video was first uploaded, this is because viewers have taken interest in the magazine and the content it provides. The video is only 30 seconds long meaning that it is a television advert which will get readers curious to what is next for Q magazine.
  • 27. Advertising to consumers-Print Example Within my research for Q magazine, I have taken a picture of a print based advertisement they use within the magazine. The picture that is clearly shown is one example of a print advertisement. Firstly it uses the Q ident in order to make readers aware that it is Q magazine, the background is red on the background with a Q in bold coloured in white. The words “New Adventures in sound” implies to the readers that something new and exciting is happening within the music industry, this could possibly be an advertisement for the “Q awards” which is an awards ceremony where different artists are chosen to collect their awards for nominated. other visual codes could include how they have used waves of sound to demonstrate to readers that it is music related. On the bottom of the advertisement, the magazine has a line-up of artists that are presenting to the public with new music. Young people and teenagers will be interested in this because they may have an artist they like within the names that are shown on the print example. The magazine has also written some of the artists in the colour red to represent the magazine so readers will know it is from Q. this will encourage readers to seek more information from the magazine, this will mean that they would more likely rely on the magazine for updates and information.
  • 28. Advertising Pricing The price of Q magazine is £5.95, advertising within the magazine includes choosing where to place the advert, what type of advertisement it is, how big it is and if it can fit on the page including the layout. The cost of the Advertisement depends how much readership it gets, for example if readers take interest in the advertisement then it will cost more money for Q magazine to invest in. This is an example of an Advertisement which was published on the 24th October from Q magazine, this is to help the magazine gain popularity which will keep readers informed about updated information about the magazine.
  • 29. National Express Partnership with Q-Relationship with the Advertiser and the Publisher Q magazine started a partnership with the National Express to help with the advertisement at the London, United kingdom festival in late August. The purpose was to to and get the audience to go to the music events throughout the year and to use the national Express coach to travel to these places as an advertisement for the campaign. Source: http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/uploads/QMediaPack-Feb2013.pdf The purpose of the introduction of the partnership was to offer a competition for readers to win an experience while they were travelling to the festival. They also include a Rock ‘n Roll experience that hires private entertainment throughout the journey. There are a variety of ways that the partnership competition was brought out to readers, for example Q magazine published two pages that are in the magazine that try to encourage readers to enter their competitions so readers get the best out of the magazine. Q also want readers opinions on the magazine overall so they know how to improve it to make it better.
  • 30. The masthead is the title of the magazine and as you can see there is a red box with the letter Q in white writing. Another convention of a Magazine cover is the main image. The denotation of the main image is “Florence and The Machine” which connotes “star appeal” (Richard Dyer). The technical code of the close up of Florence grabs the readers attention as the front cover is mainly focusing on her. The visual codes on the front cover such as the pale blue dashes and bullet points are other conventions, the bullet points in the cover line interest the reader through the brief summary and therefore they would want to read more. The strapline is placed underneath the masthead, the strapline denotes “Discover great music” which connotes inside this magazine there will be new and updated information about the music industry and the audience will be able to “Discover” this by buying and reading the magazine. On the left and right hand side of the page, there are coverlines which is information about what is inside of the magazine, for example “16 page Gig”. Coverlines are an insight to the audience about what they can read. The barcode contains the date, issue number and price, furthermore there is usually a web address (technical convergence) which allows the audience to view the magazine online. The main story is featured at the top, the main story anchors the image. The verbal code “I feel so alone” connotes that this will be an interesting story and entices the reader to want to know what it is about. Codes and conventions Denotations and Connotations of Q Front Cover
  • 31. Main Image - in this double page spread, Florence is looking directly at the reader which suggests that she is inviting the readers into the article. In the main article of the double page spread, the drop capital is used to catch the readers attention at the beginning of the text. The Font style is bold to try and make the readers interested in the Magazine. The purpose of the drop capital is to signal the reader where to begin. This article is in columns which implies the conventions of a double page spread and this is also usually a interview that is in columns. This heading is very appropriate because it is a line of one of Florence's number one singles. The bold front stands out to get the readers attention as the front is different from the others in this article The colour red is an extremely bold colour and suggests passion and fire which could connote the artists passion for music The stand first is the introduction for the interview, this gives the reader an insight on what the interview or column is about and allows them to decide if they want to read it or not. Credits- this writing states who wrote the article and who took pictures. Usually in an interview on a double page spread, there is a pull quote which is a quote from the artist pulled out of the interview. This is usually a quote that is interesting, making the audience want to read the interview. Codes and conventions Denotations and Connotations of Q Double Page Spread
  • 32. Conclusion Throughout this LO I have spoken about how Q magazine advertises within the magazine for example introducing competitions for readers to enter which will also make the magazine more popular. I have also spoken about the brand extensions of the magazine, for example Q do an awards ceremony which is celebrated for the most popular artists. Overall I have analysed Q magazine by talking about how the magazine became popular and what is featured within it.
  • 34. Genre Free sheet-there are many newspapers that deal out with no charge, meaning that customers would have the newspaper for free. This will be very popular and will include large amounts of advertising content that readers will be attracted to. These newspapers are either being handed out to the people of the public or they can be found at newspaper stands for the entire day. Free sheet was originally made the 1880s in Germany and were then given out twice a week continuously for people that wanted to read it in a town called Lubeck. Free sheet had the largest amount of readers in the newspaper Metro, this newspaper has been very popular over the years, it originally started in the year 1995. The newspaper was firstly a free sheet in public areas in Sweden where they would just sell the magazine how it is. After the newspaper became popular in many countries including the UK, Metro had made 13 issues with 1.3 million readers within the UK which is increasing by the minute. Red Top Tabloid- This newspaper has been named through the idea of the masthead as it is red and bold, the original size of the newspaper is 11 x 17 and has five columns going across. This is because the tabloid is much smaller than the newspaper and is bigger than just a general newspaper. This is so the newspaper can produce much smaller content for the newspaper but it will still be at it’s best quality. The style within each page of the newspaper are known as the topics of the paper, meaning each page will have different stories such as what has been happening in the news, sports stars and other stories they wish to include. The price overall of the newspaper is very cheap around 80p for each copy. This is because of the advertising within the newspaper. • 35. Broadsheet Broadsheet means to refer to the newspaper in a different format for example meaning the page and making sure everything fits perfectly onto the page with the content. Broadsheet’s can be small or large depending which country you are in and how big or small the person would want the advertising range to be. They would often have more or less pages depending on the quality and the price of the overall newspaper. It is said that more academic people seem to read these type of newspapers because of how detailed the stories can be and the subject it is talking about in general. Compared to the tabloid newspaper which is a broadsheet, it includes more than one final story on the front cover of the newspaper. They seem to include many stories around the newspaper pages talking about different topics. The newspaper do this to reduce the advertising rate and use more space. In the newspaper, it seems to have more interesting stories on the top instead of the bottom to catch the readers attention, this is to make the newspaper more known by people. The Broadsheet newspapers were first used in the year of 1618 where they have been first published to the public eye in the Netherlands. They were first in the UK in the year of 1700 where the company would have to pay for the newspapers, depending on how many they were. The size of the newspaper were therefore increased so they were would be more advertising and content included. Source: http://journalism.about.com/od/trends/a/tabloidsbroadsheets.htm
  • 36. Introduction Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sun_(United_Kingdom) https://www.google.co.uk/search? client=safari&rls=en&q=the+sun+newspaper+readership+figures&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF- 8&gfe_rd=cr&ei=uETuV7KGE9DU8geB6K5Q In this learning outcome I will be speaking about The Sun newspaper. The Sun newspaper is a daily tabloid newspaper that is published within the UK. They newspaper started in 1964 where the publisher Daily Herald, he came up with the name of the newspaper and the content which is included in it. The newspaper became a tabloid in 1969 after it had been produced by new publishers at the time. The new publishers of the newspaper are News group Newspapers. The Sun has been known to have the largest circulation of any newspaper found in the UK. In the picture below, it describes the readership figures for The Sun newspaper from May 2015, the average readership from the newspaper was 1,809,240 which has decreased by -1.25. This would imply that the readership from The sun has decreased by the year 2015.
  • 37. News Corporation The Sun is a red top tabloid newspaper which is under the ownership of news corporation. The news corporation are an American international mass media group headquartered in New York City. They were announced as the fourth largest media group in 2014. The Sun newspaper has long appealed to the stereotypical “white van man” readership which was used within the UK as people thought the newspaper would only appeal to white men who drive a van everyday. These men have come across to the public as “Selfish” and “Inconsiderate” people who are mostly working class and aggressive. The stereotype “white van man” connotes a D-E person who would have an manual labour job, for example a plumber. http://www.sirc.org/publik/white_van_man.html
  • 38. News Selection Throughout 'The Sun' newspaper, they have covered a particular range of stories in order to attract one audience type. The picture denoted on the right is an example where they have covered “soft” news within it to imply what the newspaper overall likes to publicize events about celebrities. The main heading for the Lead Story (a pun) “Price Fighter” implies that the newspaper is trying to relate to popular celebrities and their lives through basic language devices such as a pun. On the other hand, 'The Sun' has produced a secondary lead with the title of “Mum’s terror in jihadist hellhole” where the newspaper has spoken about a serious event (Hard news) that has happened in the world. This news selection would also demonstrate that they tend to focus on stories that are less important compared to a serious event that has great ‘magnitude’ (Galtung & Ruge) The second picture is from 'The Sun' newspaper's website, where I have taken a screen shot of an online story which has been published from the newspaper. The verbal code of the headline “Britain’s first Pokemon go murder” connotes that the newspaper uses tragic events that has happened in the world today, whereas on the print based version of the newspaper, they only publish about celebrities instead of serious events.
  • 39. Codes and Conventions-Denotation and Connotation of the Newspaper Masthead-the Masthead background is the colour red to possibly catch the readers attention, as the colour is bold and stands out. The name 'The Sun' could connote that the newspaper releases their newspapers early in the morning meaning they will get delivered at an early time for readers. This is good because it shows that the newspaper is dedicated and follows a system. Display advert-the display advert is placed on the top part of the front cover in order to attract readers. The newspaper has used the colour blue as the background as It is a bright colour and it also fits with the theme, they have used the saying “All in sun sport” as the title. They have also placed some football players in order to attract the male industry to the magazine. They have used that particular title because it will be talking about sports, also the colour blue links to this because it is a football colour. Lead story-the lead story is called “My heart stopped for 40 second” this is a very heart warming title as they have used a baby in the picture. This could connote that they were trying to attract older people to read the newspaper and viewers that are curious about the events that happen in peoples lives and would be interested reading about a life or death experience. Sunday the 26th of February 2012
  • 40. Main image-on this newspaper of 'The Sun' the main image is placed on the bottom part of the newspaper. The main image is a picture of a women and her baby, the image could be appealing for older people as it is quite heart warming for the audience. This would link to the headline “My heart stopped for 40 seconds” this headline is pointed at the image as it links to the baby the women is carrying, this would be very heart warming to the audience as it was a miracle the baby survived. The Copy-the purpose of “the copy” is to introduce the story so the readers will know what it is about before even reading this. This will get readers curious to know what is next about the story that is published within the front cover. News Values (Galtung & Ruge) – The front cover from 'The Sun' would be categorized into “Consequences, Unpredictability and Human interest” this is because the front cover is very heart warming which affects the reader emotionally.
  • 41. Secondary lead Within this Front cover of 'The Sun' newspaper, they have included a secondary lead which has been placed on the bottom left hand side of the page, with the title “Hospital deaths: Nurse is Charged” this would encourage readers to read the magazine because as well as publishing stories about celebrities, they also include serious events that have happened in the world. This would demonstrate that 'The Sun' are dedicated to publishing stories that their audience enjoy and would be interested in.
  • 42. Denotation and Connotation of a Newspaper Double Page Spread Headline-the headline of this newspaper is “Battle for Britain” which could imply that something bad has happened and would be considered important at this moment of time. this would attract the reader because the sun have written it in a bold font and used big letters, This would connote that it will be the very first thing the reader will notice and automatically have an attraction to it. Page number-the page number is located in the top right hand corner of the page, this will be the same for any newspaper ever published. This is useful for readers so they will be able to remember what is spoke about and what information is shown on each page. News Values- the news value (Currency/Continuity/Running Story) because it fits in well because the title “Battle for Britain) explains an event that is continuous and has been going on for days/weeks or even months. Technological Convergence-this is located at the very bottom of the page, it is a way to make readers aware to follow the sun on different types of social medias so you wont ever miss when the newspaper is going to be released or miss any drama that is going to be featured in the newspaper. The copy-this is located at the bottom of the newspaper where it the reader a clue about what the newspaper is going to be talking about in the articles, this will make the reader interested because it will make the reader want to read more about it. • 43. Denotation and Connotation of a Newspaper Double Page Spread Main image-the main image is centered in then middle of the double page spread, it is usually big in order for the reader to automatically see it. This could also connote that it is of high importance so the reader will know exactly what the articles are going to be about. Captions- on the main image, they would usually be a caption so readers will know what exactly it is about. This will make readers understand what exactly the article is about before they read it. Opinions- within the article, every double page spread of a newspaper has a column at the side of the double page spread where it expresses the opinions of the sun and what people over all think of the newspaper. Associated images- these images relate to the overall news story that has been talked about. This is to demonstrate to the reader an idea about what it is going to be talking about. Opening invitation-this is an article which is found in the middle of the page, the publisher has done this in order for it to relate to the main article of the double page spread. News Values-'The Sun' double page spread would be categorized into “Unpredictability, Running story and Conflict” because the news story is going to carry on for a long time as it is a shocking event.
  • 44. On the 16th page of the sun's newspaper, they have put an advertisement which was originally by the mobile company three. The sun have done this in order to promote the mobilising service and to also make people aware by paying for the newspaper, they will receive different type of advertisements which will help their everyday lives. An example of a visual code for this advertisement would be that they have used colours to possibly attract younger people. They have also used the mobile company logo to ‘inform’ (Katz) the readers where they can go to to receive this information. In the middle of the page it was the words “we love data” with a heart for “love” is again trying to attract a young audience and by also using colour this would attract more younger readers to consider reading the newspaper fully because of the different advertisements and what the newspaper offers overall. Wednesday, September 21, 2016 Advertised products-relationship between the Advertiser and publisher
  • 45. Advertised Products: Relationship Between the Advertiser and publisher This is another advertisement I found within the sun newspaper, this is located on the 18th page of the newspaper. This advertisement is based mainly on television as the company “Virgin Atlantic” which is a network where viewers can watch all the latest movies, TV shows and many more at a reasonable price. The advertisement has many appealing interests about it, for example they have shown pictures of what films and TV shows that will be included in each package no matter which one the reader may choose. This will attract readers as they wont have to pay a lot to receive these shows, this would mean that as well as advertising their own newspaper, they are also advertising other products. This will make the newspaper more popular and known to the public eye. within this advertisement is how they have used the colour red in order to attract readers, they have done this because the colour red is very bold and appealing which means readers will notice it straight away once they have seen it. Overall this advertisement is mainly used to make people aware of this company and to also increase their popularity as well as their own newspaper.
  • 46. Demographics of The Sun Throughout my research for 'The Sun' newspaper, I have calculated the age group, gender and lifestyle. For the age group within the newspaper, in the picture below, it shows the age group of the sun. it is clear that people over the age of 20 are more likely to read newspapers than younger people, this is because usually younger people use social media to find out any information they would want to know. The telegraph in the picture shows that people over the age of 30 seem to read their newspaper unlike the sun where they have a younger audience. This could be because the sun has different features and information which would attract young people. According to Katz Uses & Gratifications for The Sun newspaper is fitted into the category of ‘inform and educate’ where the audience of 'The Sun' will learn something by reading the information that is provided for example readers could be reading about an article where they could possibly learn something about a particular event within the news story. According to Hartley’s seven subjectivities', the age group for the newspaper is aimed at 20-45 year Old's, secondly the gender for the magazine is also aimed at mainly male readers. The demographics and socio economics for The Sun would fit into the group D and E because it is mainly for people that enjoy reading about the latest news that is provided about celebrities. For psychographics, 'The Sun' would fit into the category of ‘Reformers’ because they use selected products for the quality from the layout of the newspaper and what is included. Lastly, According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, the newspaper would be categorized as ‘survivors’ because they like a routine and what to know when the newspaper will be produced every month. https://www.themediabriefing.com/article/youth- audiences-newspaper-old-demographics- advertising In the picture at the bottom, it shows the readership for a variety of newspapers such as the daily mail. The readership for the sun is 5,599,00 the number has decreased since 2014 as more people seem to rely on social media to receive the latest information about the news. In the second picture below, it denotes the gender percentage for 'The Sun' and many other newspapers. It is clearly shown that more male readers read the sun than females, this could be because adult males seem to take an interest in newspaper unlike females would probably prefer magazines as they have colourful pages and pictures which would relate to the articles.
  • 47. E-Media Platform Promotion The Sun newspaper uses many different types of media platforms in order to make their newspaper more known to people. For example they have created a Facebook and Twitter page and a Youtube channel in order to publicise the newspaper. This will also keep readers up to date on the information the newspaper is going to be providing each time it is published for to the public eye. These types of social is an overall way in order to advertise the newspaper on the latest stories and well known information. The newspaper has created these pages so it will be more accessible for readers as social media is a popular way to receive information this day and age. It is also a good idea and a way for readers to connect with the newspaper, for example they can ask any questions, state their opinions or comment about the newspaper, they can also talk to other people that might share the same interests on the subject. Furthermore the sun has a you tube channel with 14,074 people that have subscribed to it, the channel is to keep readers updated and involved about the events of the newspaper. Viewers can also leave comments in the comment section just below the videos the sun has made, this way they can give feedback about what they think about the newspaper and how they can improve it as a whole.
  • 48. Throughout my research for the sun newspaper, I have found a TV that was published on the 5th of January 2016, the advert is based on home deliveries from the sun newspaper. At the start of the video, you can see that it is set in a house which is linked to “home delivery” you can then see a clock with the time set to “05 59” you can then hear a voice that is talking about mornings and explaining that the sun newspaper will deliver at any time of day. They are saying this in order to advertise the newspaper as a whole, this will then get readers interested into purchasing a copy of the newspaper considering it will directly be delivered to their door. Within the advert, they have shown a phone number which is there throughout the advert. They also have a website where readers can go visit in order to purchase their copies from the sun. in the middle of the video, you can then see people from the house that are quickly rushing around In order to get to work. The advert is trying to basically say to people that even if your in a rush, you will still be able to purchase a copy of the newspaper. Advertising to Consumers: TV Advert Example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pQ6NuD7aIc The video lasts for 30 seconds, this would identify it as a TV advert as it is not very long the video has 495 views, this has been an increase from the poster as more people look online about their information they want to find. Within the video, you can also share the video so that more people will see it and might even purchase a copy of the newspaper.
  • 49. Within my research for the sun, I have looked into the pricing of the newspaper, for example the newspaper currently is increasing its price by 10p but the overall price depends on firstly what day the reader would want to purchase a copy. For example on Sundays it is increased by 20p, which would mean that The Sun on Saturday will now cost 70p and on Sunday will be £1. The newspaper has many features for it to be within a pricing range, for example the size, position and the price overall. Firstly the price tells the reader how much the whole newspaper is and what it consists of within each page, for example the newspaper includes many different advertisements to attract readers. The advertisements within the newspaper are there for readers to look at and to possibly take interest from the offer they are receiving. Below are some examples of different page advertisements, such as half page, 25x4 and full page. There are many different types of layouts publishers can make in order for the advertisement to come across more appealing and known, this will also advertise these companies and make the newspaper more appealing to people. • 51. The Sun Website Analysis This is the main home page for the sun newspaper, you can see the navigation bar, advertisements and some images to support the newspaper overall. On this page, they have firstly used the navigation bar to divide each page into sections, for example readers can visit their sport page and see what the newspaper is publishing about sports and many other different pages they provide on the website, this would imply that the newspaper are using exclusive content. Secondly they have used different colours to often represent different things for example, they have produced the background to be the colour blue because it stands out to the audience and could represent a sports team colour. This could possibly make the reader aware that they have many different types of content and a whole range of stories to produce. At the top of the page it offers the readers with a search bar for them to explore what the newspaper is all about, this is a positive idea because then each reader might find something they are interested in, this allows readers to explore each story. On the home page you can see different types of advertisements which are located all over the page so readers will know different offers where different companies have to offer for a reasonable price. On the right hand side of the page, they have smaller articles where readers can comment on and leave their opinions about the topic that is being discussed. Overall the home page is very appealing to readers where they can find all sorts of information and interesting offers to receive about the newspaper. https://www.thesun.co.uk/

  • 54. Editors code of practice Vs. ‘The Hillsborough Disaster’ (15 April 1989) was originally covered in a rather ‘negative’ (Galtung & Ruge) manner and the newspaper were heavily criticized for sensationalizing the story to create controversy. The lead story from the issue on the right sometime later establishes how the newspaper neglected their expected ‘Accuracy’ when reporting the news, which is highlighted through the verbal code of “We are profoundly sorry for false reports”.
  • 55. Press Complaints Commission When producing and publishing the Newspaper, the first thing about the editors code is to make sure that the Newspaper is of high standards when it comes to the making of the Newspaper and making sure that every page is professorially laid out. This will include the content and how the company will be able to handle readers information that is provided so that the Newspaper will be able to handle the situation in a reasonable manner. Overall the information in the editors code must be applied into the Newspaper that is created from the Newspaper development. This will include both printed and online punishments so readers won't miss an issue of the Newspaper. This would mean that the editors can check through the information that is created by the publishers so that they can make sure that the content is published professionally within the editors codes instructions. http://www.pcc.org.uk/assets/111/Teachers__Resource_Pack.pdf http://www.pcc.org.uk/assets/80/PCC_Complaints_Statistics_for_2011.pdf
  • 56. Press Complaints Commission Accuracy The editors code is responsible to ensure that all content that is going to be published within the newspaper is suitable and is going to be featured on the front cover and double page spread. These will be featured in the newspaper in order to attract readers to read it. The editors code have to make sure that everything that is published is “accurate” meaning that there is no spelling mistakes or inaccurate information such as information about certain artists that are going to be featured in it. By following the editors code, this will grant them high quality of information that will be published in the newspaper and will also maintain the layout. This will repeat certain things such as the logo and strapline. Overall accuracy will be used throughout the newspaper and will follow the editors code which will ensure that the content that will be released is accurate. Privacy For the newspaper front cover and double page spread, I will have to gain permission from the person that will be featured in the newspaper so that it can be published. To make sure that the editors of the newspaper will gain permission, they will have to directly contact the person that they would like to feature in it, they could possibly do this by email in order for them to gain permission to take their photograph.
  • 57. Conclusion In conclusion, in this leaning outcome I have been studying advertisements of a magazine and newspaper. I have been analysing Q magazine, the sun newspaper and the daily mail. Firstly I started to look at print based product advertisements within the magazine and newspaper, I have analysed different products within these and talked about how they give the newspaper and magazine more popularity for young people and adults. Secondly I started looking at the magazine and newspaper front covers and double page spreads and I have analysed the different connotations and denotations of these. I have done this to order to understand different parts of the magazine and newspaper so I will be able to become more confident of media products within these resources. Furthermore I have looked into the demographics of the newspaper 'The Sun', I have achieved this by looking into the readership and age groups of the newspaper so readers will understand where the newspaper stands today. I will continue to repeat this process in the future where I have a general and professional idea of print based products.

  • 59. Mind Map-Alternative Idea Target audience-the target audience for Mojo magazine is targeted at adults that are interested in classical rock music magazines. The magazine focuses on the genre of their music and where the magazine is represented through the content and appearance. Mojo would feature a more older and wider band artists which would attract older people to the magazine. Images- on the front cover of Mojo magazine it shows the main image that is linked to the main cover line. It has a medium close up of the women in the image , the artist is wearing heavy make up and as the genre of the magazine is classical music which links to the fact that she is representing classical music. Colour scheme- the colour scheme of mojo magazine involves very bold colours such as gold and black. These colours stand out very well against the background in order to catch the readers attention. The colours used are quite eye catching as the reader will start to notice the colour scheme. Brand identity-the specific features shown within the magazine are self advertised which is described through personal articles about the artist. Frequency of realise- mojo magazine produces magazines on a monthly basis, the total circulation of Mojo magazine of June 2013 is 79,345 and you can also subscribe to it online which you can save 70%. This will encourage readers to purchase it as they will have an idea what the magazine is going to be about. • 60. Mind Map-Final Idea Generation of Ideas Colour scheme-the colour’s of Q magazine consist of red, blue, white and black. The colour red connotes excitement and mystery, this would demonstrate that the magazine would encourage explores different types of colours in order for the reader to see the colour scheme of the magazine overall. This would link to my created magazine because I'm going to use bold and bright colours such as red, blue black and white in order to appeal to readers. Price- the price of Q magazine costs £3.99, I am going to repeat this by using a similar price to the created magazine. As it is an expensive price, I will also repeat this by using a similar price because it would connote to readers that the magazine is at its best quality. Frequency of Release- Q magazine is released on a monthly basis, this is because the magazine is quite expensive and produces more content for readers as they have waited a month instead of a week to purchase a copy of the magazine. This would also link to the created magazine because it will also be released on a monthly basis in order to attract readers. Target Audience- The target audience of Q magazine are aimed at young people and adults from the ages of 25. The genre of Q magazine is electric which is going to be the same with my created magazine because it would be aimed at the same target audience meaning within the same age group. Images- on the front cover of Q magazine it shows the artist Florence and the machine. The magazine used this particular artist because she is a popular music artist which would attract more people to read it. I am going to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale – 1980) this during the making of the magazine I'm going to be creating by using a popular artist on the front cover to attract more people to read it. I will use a clos up image of the artist to demonstrate to readers that it is an important part of the magazine. Brand identity-specific features that are shown for Q magazine are self advertisement’s that appeals through articles and the artist. This would link to the created magazine because it will be known from social media that would include personal articles about the artist. Masthead Names- • M • U • Shuffle • Playlist • Volume • More Music (MM) Images of inspiration-throughout my generation of ideas, I have included images of inspiration that will help advertise the magazine. This will encourage readers to purchase it as they will have an idea what the magazine is going to be about. I have included a front cover and double page spread of Q magazine that will interest readers to the magazine.
  • 63. Mood board Conclusion When creating this mood, I have chosen inspiring images from particular artists and social media such as Instagram and Facebook to display them in the magazine I create. My magazine will have synergy with Facebook. This will give the reader a brief idea of what kind of things will be featured in the magazine and what the articles/interviews will talk about.

  • 67. The strapline is placed underneath the masthead, where the strapline denotes “Discover great music” which connotes inside this magazine there will be new and updated information about the music industry and the audience will be able to “Discover” this by buying and reading the magazine. The main story is featured at the top, where the main story anchors the image. The verbal code “I feel so alone” connotes that this will be an interesting story and entices the reader to want to know what it is about. Front Cover Analysis - Inspiration
  • 68. Double page spread Analysis - Inspiration
  • 69. Front cover Within the magazine front cover for Q magazine, they have many features, the main feature they use is the Main image which provides the reader with a back story of what the magazine will be like. The magazine overall starts off with the masthead which is placed on the top left hand corner of the front cover, this will show readers it is Q magazine where according to Steve Neale’s research they are going to repeat the masthead on every page of the magazine where they will demonstrate consistency. Secondly they have placed an image they are using in the centre of the page where they have enlarged it to over lap the written information and masthead. The magazine usually uses a picture of a popular artist in order to encourage ‘star appeal’ to the reader. They have then used a puff promotion which is placed on the top right hand corner, this provides readers with a promotion where they could either enter a contest to receive something free or maybe a discount on the subscription service within the magazine. The magazine then would place the cover lines on each side of the page in order to advertise different artists that are being featured in the magazine, they also provide something from the articles which are found inside. Lastly they use the title which is placed at the bottom of the page which they use the name of the artist that is featured on the front cover in order to increase their chances of a reader buying the magazine. Double page spread Within the magazine Double page spread for Q magazine, they have many features in order for the reader to take interest in, for example they have the main image which is placed on the left side of the page, they have chosen to place it here in order for the reader to see it straight away when they turn the page. The image is also a way for the reader to get an idea about what the interview or articles are about. Secondly they have placed the interview on the other side of the page to show they are thinking clearly about what kind of layout they want to use. Following this, they also use a drop capital at the start of every interview to catch readers attention by using a different font and size to make it look professional. Thirdly the magazine have placed a pull quote that is linked to the interview so again readers will understand what was spoken about. Lastly the magazine uses credits on the double page spread so the reader will know who produced it, this will encourage readers to know more about the magazine overall. Layout of the magazine
  • 70. Stereotypes The age group for Sound magazine is mainly aimed at 15-24 year old's, the gender for the magazine is aimed at both male and female readers. The demographics and socio economics for Sound would fit into the group D and E because it is mainly for people that enjoy multiple music genres which means it wouldn’t be upper class compared to other magazines. Sound magazine is fitted into the category of ‘inform and educate’ where the audience will learn something by reading the information for example readers could be reading about an article and they could possibly learn something about within the article they are reading. The stereotypical areas of interest for this readership would be: Casual clothing
  • 71. Production Legal and Ethical Issues Before my magazine can be published to the public, there are some legal and ethical issues that have to be investigated before doing so. Two of these are to publish the organization so that it is professional, this will also include privacy to label accuracy. Copyright- the legal right to be the only one to produce, publish and sell a book, a video or anything on social media that has been created or brought out to the public. an example of this would be brochures, books and other things on social media that would be considered copyrighted. For Sound magazine, I am going to use copyright by using pictures of a particular artist or band member. By using different images, they will have to therefore ask the company for permission in order to use the image. The right to privacy- publishing content about different people, it is important to regulate people’s privacy and what they purchase on the internet. In order to make sure of this, I will have to ask the people for their permission to feature on my magazine. Seditious and Criminal Libel- this is when something that is released on the internet is considered offensive to the government and the people of the public. Criminal Libel is published information that is released about someone that is considered negative to the public and which would create a reputation for that person or company.
  • 73. Trademarking the name of the magazine In Sound, the designer team will ensure that the name we have chosen, slogan and logo is trademarked under the ‘intellectual property’’ law. The cost of the trade marketing will cost £170. Mention considerations (copyrighting the name and logo) How you did this 1-the first step you will need to do if you want to trademark the name of the magazine is to firstly register your trade mark online to protect the brand. When you have registered, you will be able to confront anyone that is going to use it without permission. 2-after you have applied, you will be able to be given feedback within 20 days. when they have received your application, it will be published into the trade marks journal. Then the trade mark will be resolved and you will be able to receive a certificate to confirm the registration. 3-you will then need to identify how much it will cost within the application, for example you will need to pay £100 plus £25 for each class. https://www.gov.uk/how-to-register-a-trade-mark/apply
  • 74. ASA When producing products within Sound magazine, I will have to consider the advertising rules in order for the products to be at a standard quality within Sound magazine. I will have to make sure that it is not misleading to readers and I will also have to make sure that I am not producing any incorrect information. In order to advertise these products, I must have made sure that I promote them but using the rules that are provided so they will be promoted in the best way possible. https://www.asa.org.uk/General/Search.aspx?s=products
  • 75. House Style of the magazine - SOUND When creating different for Q I thought it was important to include the details of the house styles and colours in which I will use on my created magazine. In each of my proposals there was an outline on what is going to be included in the magazine and the features such as colour schemes and logos. Masthead When deciding on the masthead for the magazine I thought I would have it similar to the colour scheme and similar to my magazine of inspiration which is Q magazine and I will also use similar colours to Q such as the colour red. I will use other colours like black and blue to create my masthead. I will use effects such as make the masthead stand out and look professional in my magazine. Colour scheme For Q the house style is the colour scheme, whereby they have chosen the colours to be bright dark red, black and blue. The red will connote to the readers that I am taking ideas from my magazine of inspiration and also the how professional they have laid out the magazine. the colour scheme will be continued on every page of the magazine.
  • 76. House Style of the magazine Synergy with social media I am going to be using synergy with other social media products within Sound magazine for example I am going to promote the magazine on Facebook and twitter so readers can be updated when the magazine is going to be published and who it is going to feature. Strapline language The strapline language for Sound magazine is “UK’s best selling magazine” this will encourage readers towards the magazine as it promotes the magazine’s title. This will therefore attract readers as it is going to be promoted as a future magazine.
  • 77. Use of social media in the magazine Within Sound magazine, I am going to be using different types of social media for example Facebook and Twitter. Within Facebook, they give permission for users to use content that is posted by other users that are on Facebook. It would also include identification such as names and profile photos, this will enable users to know who you are. Facebook provide their logo where it provides assets to a limited size where it is placed as the brand identity of the website. Within sound magazine, I am going to use the identification of the brand name so it will be known to readers. Facebook do not not trademarks as they don’t want it to readers to be confused by the brand. Within sound magazine I am going to be using trademarks sound magazine will not be copyrighted by any other company that would like to use it without permission. In order to keep the brand logo aware to the readers, I will need to make sure it is not over lapping with the other assets in order to keep it professional. Facebook doesn’t have any licenses to any trademarks it provides, for example logos or intellectual property for the use of merchandise. When creating sound magazine, I am going to provide trademarks for both the logo and merchandise which is included. The twitter logo symbolises what is happening around the world, they have used the colour blue within the outline of a bird, in order for the logo to be placed, it must be 150% of place between the width of the logo to ensure it is at its best quality. They have chosen the colour blue to represent twitter as it is a colour that represents the world and what is happening within it. When using icons within twitter, they use either white or blue to represent their brand where I will need to use an equal bit of space between the height and width of the logo so it will maintain it's quality. Twitter use variations within their social media product where they are representing each tweet that is being posted, twitter advises users to use as much content as possible which will enable it to build association to twitter. https://brand.twitter.com/logo https://en.facebookbrand.com
  • 78. Twitter Trademarks In order to create a trademark, I will need to follow steps in order to make it official 1-i will firstly need to not alter the trademark for example changing the size of colour as it will loose it's quality 2-all the twitter trademarks must appear individually as it would look more professional to the audience. 3-the trademarks must not be placed anywhere where text is shown as it would interfere with the content of the product. 4-twitter trademarks are not to be used within sponsorships without any sort of permission or a license from twitter. 5-you are not allowed to use twitter's trademarks in a negative way where it would affect the product and it's services. 6-users are not allowed to use twitter trademarks to refer to any type of social media other than twitter, users must only retweet tweet that are linked by twitter products. 7-when you are creating a product that is linked by twitter, you will have to choose a unique name so other users will not be confused by confused by twitter and the product name. 8-users must know all all the rights of the twitter trademarks and the property of twitter which will be generated through the social media product.
  • 79. Genre of the Magazine The denotation of Q Magazine’s genre is eclectic, it is confirmed as eclectic because it has a range of genres, this is because Q magazine is aimed at young people and adults that are interested in a specific genres. The slogan “the worlds greatest music Magazine” suggests that it is trying to attract readers by using interesting language, for example formal and informal language to attract young people and adult audiences. The magazine is trying to convince readers that if you read the magazine it is the greatest and you can’t beat it.
  • 80. Magazine Masthead/logo When creating my masthead/logo for the magazine, I have done this in order for readers to know what the magazine is called and what logo is used to represent it. Furthermore, I needed to make sure that logo was similar to my magazine of inspiration which is Q to show readers it was my inspired magazine. I have used the colours red, blue, white and black which is similar to Q magazine as I want to base the magazine through Q magazine. The colour black connotes mystery and darkness, this will make the readers interested because it gives it a sense of mystery when reading my magazine. The colour red connotes excitement as the readers won’t expect what is going to be in the magazine. House style consistency- While looking for fonts and colour choices of the magazine, I have decided to constantly use different features by using different types of fonts that I have chosen. I have also decided to place the logo on each page to show that the magazine is consistent throughout. I will be doing this so readers will find the magazine appealing and will know the brand.
  • 81. Target audience for both magazines Before looking at the needs of my own magazine ‘Sound’ and ‘Volume’ I wanted to look at its magazine of inspiration ‘Q’ magazine. By doing so I could look at where Q magazine are losing relationship and thinking of new and better ideas to use in my magazine “Sound”. At Hartley's 7 subjectivities this chart connotes that the percentage of readers that are aged 15-24 years old. The target audience and relationship of Q magazine would be according to the socio- economic need chart has a high percentage of readers. This means that the magazine is very popular and draws in the attention of the readers to read Q magazine. According to Maslow, Sound and VOLUME magazine is fitted into the category of “survivors” because it will know that the readers will know when the magazine will be published and what information it will be receiving. According to Katz, Sound and VOLUME magazine is fitted into the category of ‘inform and educate’ meaning that everything they will read will give them different information about the magazine.
  • 82. Target Audience for SOUND According to Sound, it would fit into the category of personal identification for Katz because the audience of Sound magazine would relate to the artist and the information being produced of that particular artist For Hartley category, the age group of Sound magazine would fit into 16-25 year olds that are interested, it will be for both genders but mainly females and finally for class, it would fit into the category of young working class students, which means that Sound is targeted at young people that have working jobs. Finally for Maslow, Sound would fit into the category of ‘Explorers’ which means that the readers of Sound magazine will experience reading something different every week when it is published.
  • 83. Target Audience for SOUND According to the psychographics table, the target audience for Sound would fit into the category of ‘Reformers’ because Sound’s target audience would like to be aware of each artist that is going to be published each month for viewers to read, also the audience would select products of Sound magazine that were at top quality. Also the target audience would be also aimed at ‘strugglers’ as they seek escape and the people in the C1and C2 within Q magazine as their audience is at a higher class. that Sound magazine was inspired from. Lastly the target audience would be ‘Aspirers’ because Sound magazine is related to younger people who seek status which therefore they would be interested in Sound magazine because it would seek a lower status which means young viewers would more likely be interested.

  • 85. Magazine Colours When deciding the magazine fonts for my magazine, I had to be very specific when using the font because it will effect the way the magazine is presented. I have chosen specific fonts because my magazine is aimed at the higher end of the market when it comes to a variety of people. I have chosen several fonts that will be used in my magazine. there is a large range of fonts that are easier to read than others when sized differently. For the main text of my magazine which is going to be the same because it shows that there is consitantency throughout my magazine and it prevents it from looking messy and un-professional, other fonts such as “neon 80s” are going to be used in my magazine because they are easier to read and will have a smaller font size, furthermore I would concentrate on using these type of fonts in the article of my magazine.

  • 87. This is my second proposal for “Volume” magazine, it includes format, working title, genre, content, style and approach of the magazine, the audience for example if it is aimed at teenagers or adults, the length of the magazine for example how many pages it will have and the frequency such as the price of the magazine.

  • 90. Spending Power For “Sound” magazine, the target audience will be mainly aimed at young people and teenagers following the power It will have compared to Q magazine. I have chosen Q magazine to be my magazine of inspiration because it produces similar content to what I will be using within Sound magazine. When looking at the table from the Bauer media pack, I have analysed that Q magazine readers are aged between 16-24 years of age. This will be similar to “sound” because there are some features and content that will be the same as Q which will be aimed at a similar age group. this is in reference to Hartley's seven ‘subjectives’ because it demonstrates that I have used age, gender and other theories that would be considered spending power from the magazine.
  • 91. First front cover Hand Drawn Drafts Magazine Logo- I have chosen to place my magazine logo on the left top corner of the front cover, I have chosen this in particular as it will be easy for readers to see as it will be eye catching. I have been inspired to put the magazine logo in this particular place because of Q magazine, this is because It is my magazine of inspiration. I have chosen these colours on the magazine logo because Q magazine has a red logo, I have then got the idea of using the same colour. . Main story- I have decided to place my main story on the right hand side of the front cover because I thought that readers will notice it straight away as it is close to the main image, this will encourage readers to buy it. The main story will have a clear view of the magazine logo and the main image. I was inspired by Q magazine to place it in this particular area, other Q magazines have this in the same place, this will show I am following my magazine of inspiration. Puff promotion- when placing the puff promotion on the top left hand corner, I have chosen to place it in this particular place because it is similar to my magazine of inspiration which is Q magazine. I thought about placing it here because it will attract readers to the magazine. This will also encourage the reader to buy the magazine as it features what is going to be inside and who the main story is about. Magazine layout- when creating the hand drawn drafts for my magazine, I wanted to make sure that they look professional and eye catching for the reader to see, this will more likely attract the reader to read the magazine. I wanted to carefully think about where I wanted to place certain things such as the masthead and the puff promotion. In order to do this I have looked at my magazine of inspiration which is Q magazine and followed a similar layout so readers will know it is my magazine of inspiration. Article feature- on this hand drawn draft, I was aiming to include content about popular artists in order to catch the readers attention. Then I will make the title of the pages smaller in order for the readers to know more about the content of the magazine and what it has to offer.
  • 92. First double page spread hand drawn draft Main image- I created this double page spread by looking at my magazine of inspiration which is Q magazine, I thought it was a good idea for the image to be a big part of the double page spread. This will be eye catching to the reader and will be the first thing the reader sees, I then positioned the masthead just above the main image to again attract the readers attention. Information about the artist- this includes specific information that readers would like to know about the artist, which includes information about who they are and how they got famous and why they are popular to the public. Article images- on this double page spread, I will be including smaller images to represent the main image and to tell the reader abit about what they will be reading. Also the smaller images can refer back to the article which readers could find interesting, this will also encourage the reader to read the article and find out what it is about. Interview- I have placed the interview in columns, as you can see in this double page spread, I have done this make it more interesting for the reader. An interview in a magazine is personal information about the artist and their life, this will encourage readers to find out more about the artist that they like and admire. I have also placed it in columns because it will seem like a build up for the reader, I have used questions and answers in the interview to show that it is professionally laid out and tells readers information about the artist.
  • 93. Interview Draft Planning For my double page spread within the magazine, I am going to construct an interview with a well known artist. I have chosen the artist “Florence and the Machine” as well as featuring her in the double spread for my magazine. she will also be featured on the main headline, this will attract the audience as she is popular and well known to the public. I have chosen to interview “Florence and the machine” because she is a well known artist and has been in the music industry for a very long time, she has been a great success in the music industry and has made a great impact on people today. Florence has made three up coming albums and nearly made the top charts in 2013, her recently realised song “what kind of man” created a very emotional but understanding impact to her fans and was a great hit when it first came out. the song would draw in readers because they would recognise Florence on the front cover headline and they would be interested straight away because she is a very popular and she would get the audiences attention. I want to interview her because it would create a positive impact on readers and she would be a great inspiration to both young people and adults. The presentation of the interview on the double page spread will be laid out as a question and answer style. This is quite typical in many magazines, it makes it easier for the reader to understand the information that is being published in the questionnaire.
  • 94. Interview Draft Article FD: Jess Blundell 16, talks new and upcoming album and shares advice to people about going into a music career. JB: It’s been great thanks for asking, it was very busy but exciting at the same time. FD: how do you feel that your new song went at the top of the charts in just a week? JB: I was really amazed and thankful for my fans support, I found that my song really inspired my fans and just people in general, sometimes when I have a bad day I think about how supportive my fans are and then I start to think about the song and how it made people feel. FD: So how is your song writing process work? JB: Well I start off thinking about the song beat then I get some ideas from the people that help with creating my songs. I do admit they give me inspiration to write songs, they give me a few ideas that I could use, I think of lyrics for them and then we think of a name for the song. FD: So your new album is being realised soon, what can we expect from it? JB: You can expect a lot of emotion such as happy and sad. I was aiming at getting my fans to understand the different types of music I create and what the message is in the song. FD: Have you learnt any important or tough lessons from your early experiences of the music industry? JB: Well it is very hard to get into the music industry, when you get in to it there’s no going back to a normal person, your automatically known to the public and sometimes it is very tuff to keep a brave face. FD: I heard that you sold out your tour, how does that feeling of thousands of people want to see you and only you feel like? JB: It’s shocking to be honest; it makes me feel happy that I'm making other people happy when they listen to my music and its also shocking how thousands of people look up to me as a person and not just a singer. I try my best to do a lot for my fans as they got me where I am today. FD: Thank you Jessica for your time it’s been great talking with you. Do you have any words of inspiration for your fans that are looking to pursue a music career? JB: Thank you and my advice to them is to never stop believing in yourself and you will get there, if your talented at singing then I suggest you keep at it and never stop until you’ve been noticed by someone. During my work for my magazine, I had to create a interview draft article for both magazines “Sound” and “Volume” magazine. I had to write 10 questions, the interviewer would ask 5 questions and the artists would answer 5 questions.

This will also imply what type of equipment I will need so that I can fully take them at the best quality and it will also make me aware of any possible risks/hazards that could happen in the process. Furthermore, I have taken some images of the equipment that I will be using in the process in order to take the images, I used a digital canon camera, I used this while changing the settings each time so that I can get a better quality image. https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/cameras

  • 104. Production Legal and Ethical Issues Discrimination-if an article is published and has signs of discrimination, this would mean they are talking about an individuals race, colour, religion and gender. Examples of discrimination would be racism, harassment and many others. This would link to sound magazine because I will make sure that I am not going to use discrimination when publishing information. Children- people have to be careful about what they say about children in the media industry and content that is released about them because they are considered innocent and vulnerable. It is important to use permission from their parents/parent to use their information on the internet if they are under the age of 18, then the parents or parent will then have to agree to the terms and make sure that they are using necessary content that is appropriate for the magazine. Accuracy-content that is published in a magazine must not be inaccurate, this means that the information they produce such as written information or pictures they use must not be misleading. This means that it must be accurate and not made up or extended. Furthermore, I need to be accurate in the magazine I am creating because then I will be giving readers the correct information that they are reading about within the magazine. This would link to Sound magazine as I will have to make sure I don’t publish any incorrect information to readers. https://www.tes.com/lessons/x9hMlieIZ5BXqQ/unit-6-week-5-discrimination http://www.eastspartachurch.com/childrens-mnistry/
  • 105. Legal and Ethical Issues Contract Challenges: when looking through the content of the magazine, it goes through a contract to the organisation so they will only use copyright on the things that they have created. When the person/people sign the contract, this will then mean they have to stick to it and it must not be changed in any way possible. This would also mean that they have control of some of the rights they have made. Copyright:Intellectual Property-before making the magazine, I had to research legal areas that I can then be able to use a type of content in my magazine that I will be producing. Using this, they will have to ask for permission to use particular content so it can be featured in the magazine and so it will be safe from paying fines. Privacy-when publishing content into my magazine, I will have to make sure that I limit people's privacy that will be featured in the magazine. I will have to make sure that I ask for permission for any personal details that will be featured before I publish the magazine and with the permission of the person I would like to feature in the magazine. I have to also made sure not to include anything negative information about that person so the magazine won't have a negative impact on the readers and public. https://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/ When making the magazine, I have to make sure that I include legal and ethical issues when dealing with the content that is going to be featured in the magazine. For example I could talk about private information from an artist and I will have to deal with what I say and the limits. I will then create protection copyright so that I only use it for my organisation and other
