The Saturday All Day Training normally runs
from 9am-5pm. Its target audience is all but
primarily target beneficiaries of the Grassroots
Development Program being children and
young teens. It addresses among others en-
gaging our children and youth; keeping them
safe from drug abuse and alcohol abuse as are
other abuses. Most importantly educating and
equipping attendants with self-defense and life
skills, towards behavior change modification.
This program requires sponsorship for us to
keep our children busy. Most are from low
income groups. We need to procure them uni-
form as well as feed them on the day. Osu!

every three months. This must be observed so
that students submitted for Regional and Na-
tional Gradings are being considered for high-
er Kyu ranks. This also saves cost in terms of
grading fees to the dojo and student.
The Oikado Membership booklet is mandato-
ry. In the kohai ranks it will be issued once and
covers grading endorsements up to Shodan. A
decision has been taken that Certificate of
Rank for Kyu will only be issued at National
Gradings. That regions will issue own at re-
gional gradings. To that end Regional Chiefs
must liaise with Certificate Project champion
so that Oikado Regional Certificate of Rank are
produced.
In our quest for peace and in serving each
other we all become free. Osu!
We are constrained by resources to fulfill
greater Oikado goals. Availability of dojo
space, capital, demographics and geo-
graphical distances. This presents a chal-
lenge to regular technical support and
teaching. Hence the importance of photo-
graphic and video evidence of one’s train-
ing will take center stage in the near future.
Regular submission of papers and articles
to Oikado journals, news letters, Facebook,
whatsApp and to various international
groups. Adherence and compliance to this
approach mandatory.
Due to resource constraints Oikado is de-
centralizing. Licensing, Authority and Grad-
ing Rights will be passed to Regional Chiefs
and Dojo sensei. Oikado Grading Schedules
will be observed as would be advised by
honbou from time to time. Hanshi through
Kyoshi and Technical Board will release the
Oikado Teaching & Assessment Syllabus.
Certainly Regional, National and Honbou
Gradings will be maintained. That grading
into Dan ranks is sanctioned by honbou.
Grading into Yondan and above is at hon-
bou by Chief Instructor assisted by Kyoshi
and the Technical Council.
Dojo sensei have been authorized to pro-
mote kohai regularly. Where a dojo re-
ceives regular teaching and instruction from
a sensei at least 3 days of the week, sensei
are expected to promote their students once
Grassroots Development Program 175-125 words
Regional Updates 100-150 words
Martial arts schools world wide survive
through having development structures. In
Botswana various sporting codes run a BNSC
program called “Re ba Bona Ha”, a youth
development program of the affiliates of
BNSC. The Botswana Karate Association
(BOKA) in their drive to meet up with youth
development milestones have a “Project
1000” in which their target is to establish dojo
in at least 1000 public schools by 2016.
In Oikado we call it The Grassroots Develop-
ment Program. It dates back to 1990-2000
when we ran the Schools Karate Champion-
ships and the Nation-wide Coaching and
Training Clinics. These grassroots activities
are alive. It is hoped that the youth champi-
onships will be re-introduced in 2015
resources permitting.
Regions and dojo are required to attract
membership in particular in the age
brackets of 5-12, 13-16, 17-23 and the
seniors. Through the Adopt-A-School
Campaign, Oikado Sensei have been
challenged to adopt a school, open a
karate club with and offer regular tech-
nical support and instruction.
Regions and sensei must report regularly
to Hanshi and Kyoshi.

THE ADVENT OF OIKADO IN BOTSWANA
1980: Hanshi whilst at University of Swazi-
land, Kwaluzeni campus, met with one Thabo
Twala sensei, a Sandan in both Shotokan and
Kyokushinkaikan. Sensei Twala introduced
hanshi to distinguished grandmasters in Man-
zini in particular to Grandmaster Kanei Uchi-
ba who specialized in Oikado.
1982: Grandmaster Kanei Uchiba introduced
hanshi to Grandmaster Sao Senzo Yamada in
Durban who in turn introduced hanshi and
Twala sensei to Grandmaster Dr. Louis H.
Fried. 10th Dan in Oikado and member of the
World Sokeship Council. Grandmaster Dr.
Fried continued the education of hanshi in
their system and graded him 6th Dan in 1987
and conferred him the title of Kyoshi Patrick
S ol omzi M a kga beny a na . Ky os hi
Makgabenyana also was issued with the In-
ternational Instructors License and was ad-
mitted into the prestigious institution as a
life member of the International Society of
Martial Artists [ ISMA].
1998: Kyoshi Patrick S. Makgabenyana was
admitted into the National College of Mar-
tial Arts International [ NCMA] and was
graded Schischidan[7th Dan] by the found-
er of Tenshi Goju Karate Do, Grandmaster
Dr. Lou Angel, 15th Dan Black Belt holder.
With this licensure hanshi began the pro-
cess of the oathed principle to teach the
new martial art system in Botswana, Oikado

The number of students Hanshi Dr.
Makgabenyana has taught and continues to
teach is countless. Most have now taken re-
sponsibility of running Oikado Martial Arts
School International Botswana. With these
development and having graded and gradu-
ated many students, Hanshi now concentrates
on writing martial arts monograms and
books. Hanshi has written several books un-
der the theme The Martial Arts Legacy: 12
Volumes.
“In the ways of our Way the seeker of the
truth is unbounded in mind and heart, he
goes beyond the fact of illusions and con-
tent of his own ignorance for he does not
seek with the persuasions of his ego and
mind, but of the heart and spirit. The in-
credible wonder and brilliance that which is
there can only be comprehended in pure-
ness and emptiness of the mind and spir-

began the study of martial arts in 1968. He
studied the martial art system of Wing Chu

December 1969 he relocated to Botswana. He
began teaching the martial arts in 1972 to
many people and secondary schools, and
advanced his knowledge of martial arts with

From these trainings and attachments he
qualified for the scholarship to study the
Unique system of Oikiru Ryu Karate Jitsu Do,
OIKADO (one of seven systems under the
Oikiru Ryu Martial Arts Family). Hanshi be-
came one of the most distinguished and
distinctive martial arts teacher up to pre-

Rewind 1989: “ Hanshi did not confine instruc-
tion to the dojo. Learning went on everywhere
all the time you were with him. One day in 1989
after training, Motshegetsi sensei and I were
escorting him out of campus. He lodged in
extension 14. He gave us money to buy him
something from the university tuckshop. We
were gone for less than two minutes and when
we returned he was nowhere to be found. We
knew it was a lesson and a challenge. We were
running around all the possible routes he could
have taken but failed to locate him. We took
our search off-campus, hoping to overtake him
and even went all the way to his house, more
than a kilometer away but did not find him. We
gave up, but had learned our lesson as young
black belts. We never talked about it but for
me, it was a lesson on “evasion” a survival
technique.” Shihan Ranko B. Motlalekgosi
“Hanshi identified the True Spirit of Mar-
tial Arts, and nurtured it earlier on in
learning. This is an attribute that we
should crave for. It is through Hanshi'
meticulous attention to this detail that a
lot of us who thought martial arts was all
about being rough and macho were first
taught to be submissive. I would dare say
in the late eighties weeding off misuse of
our techniques had the severest of pun-
ishment. Such was a necessary teaching.
It also dawns in me that a lot of tech-
niques of Oikado were not taught to peo-
ple who would get into trouble with the
techniques later in life”.
Shihan Dr. Patrick Masokwane
“Hanshi has an innate mechanism of ensur-
ing that all his children engaged each other.
It is interesting that today "any student of
OIKADO has something to learn from other
students of OIKADO". In other words Hanshi
deposited a huge Martial Arts knowledge
base on all of us”. Dintle
“The key perspective that Hanshi put forth in
us is emphasizing transcendental and trans-
lational martial arts, some perception that
does not lead to the artist being left at one
dimension of Martial Arts”. Maburu
“It is amazing even after months of no con-
versation he would address the student’s
worries including the latest concerns”.

OIKADO BEGINNINGS : HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
1939:- SHIDOSHI YAMADA TOHEI AND SHI-
DOSHI KIMURA TODANA MET AT KYO-
DO,OSAKA AND DISCUSSED THE POSSIBILITY
OF INTRODUCING A SYSTEM OF MARTIAL ARTS
THAT WOULD BE TRANSCEDENTAL IN TECH-
NIQUE,CHARACTER AND SPIRITUALI-
TY.SHIDOSHI YAMADA SPECIALISED IN THE
YAMAGUCHI CLAN FAMILY STYLE OF NINJUTSU

TINE ORGANISATIONS OF THE BLACK NINJAS

TWO SHIDOSHI BEGAN RECRUITING THE VARI-
OUS SYSTEMS OF THE OUCANA KOBU-JITSU
AND THE KUNG FU OF THE NORTHERN SHAO-
LIN THROUGH THE MONK TE-MO CHUNG. IT IS
THROUGH THE COMBINATION OF THEIR BEST
TECHNIQUES THAT THE BASIC CONCEPT OF
THE COMMON FACETS OF STYLES EMERGED
UNDER THE FOLLOWING PRICIPLES.
1. THE STANDARD OBJECT TO IMPART AND
IMPORT MARTIAL ARTS IS MAN.
2. ALL MARTIAL ARTS ARE A CREATION OF
COMMON DENOMINATIONS OF FIST, KICK,
BLOCK AND STANCE AND THEIR SUBDIVI-
SIONS.
3. ALL MARTIAL ARTS ARE THE FALCRUM
OF PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL DE-
VELOPMENT IRRESPECTIVE OF THE METHOD-
FROM THESE PRINCIPLES EMERGED THE CON-
CEPT OF “THE UNIFYING FIST OF THE WAY OF
THE TECHNIQUES”, OIKIRU RYU KARATE JITSU
DO[ OIKADO ].
SENSEI KOHEMI TASHIMATA OF THE SCHOOL OF KIJU
ENJOINED THE “UNIFYING FIST” AND INTRODUCED
THE FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF THE TECHNIQUES OF
NINJITSU BO-KU JITSU, THE ART OF THE INVINCIBLE
WARRIOR THUS TRANSFORMING THE SYSTEM INTO
ONE OF THE FORMIDABLE SYSTEM THAT WHICH IS
TRANSCEDENTAL IN NATURE, FUNCTION AND STRUC-
TURE.

ULTIMATE OBJECTS OF THE UNIFYING FIST. 2
1954:- THE UNIFYING FIST WAS INTRODUCED
IN THE USA AND LATER IN THE BAHAMAS,
TAIWAN, THE UK. THIS INTRODUCTION IN THE
WEST AND TO THE REST OF THE WORLD WAS

A number of Projects and Initiatives to for
Oikado are ongoing. Managing and run-
ning Oikado and dojo is a resource inten-
sive exercise. To that end to have a public
appeal and visibility, regions and dojo
have a mix of projects such as branded T-
shirts, key-holders and other merchan-
dise.
Challenges remain in obtaining a supplier
of Golden-yellow karate suit for Oikado.
The search is on with a possible supplier
as far as Pakistan. The Golden-yellow
cloth is hard to come by. Even though the
white suit is available, the prescribed Oi-
kado cut is not readily available.
A supplier had been identified. The Gold-
en-yellow defines us and the great cyclical
shifts as espoused in our doctrinal basis.

The Oikado Way
Martial arts is a science. The reason
styles are called Ryu, schools. To that
end black belt Dan levels are equated to
academic qualifications. Guidelines ob-
served. (see page 7)
Oikadoka kohai who are in secondary
schools, college, university and working
must start a culture of martial arts dis-
course. Dojo and sensei must encourage
and develop and enforce in their stu-
dents. Most sensei and dojo are failing
embrace The Oikado Way as early as in
the kyu ranks, certainly mandatory for
black belts cadre. It is going to be diffi-
cult if not impossible for Oikado to yield
cadre into Godan and above, yet we have
capacity and indeed educated Yudansha.
Oikado recognizes academic achieve-
ments and requires Yudansha to have
their academic qualifications commensu-
rate with their rank status.
Oikado Sandan, 3rd Dan Black belt: it
marks ascendency into black belt of in-
structorship status. Full status of Sensei.
It comes with huge responsibility. A
researcher, writer and above all together
with Shidan and Godan they are tech-
nical custodians. They carry and person-
ify the Technical Gold Standard of Oi-
kado. Their assessment is very strict. To
that end their visibility in terms of par-
ticipation by having a dojo, hosting and
running Gashuku, seminars, boot camps
are important. Participating in and en-
couraging martial discourse, debates,
discussions and posting on Oikado and
general martial arts important mile-
stones. In the ways of our Way the seeker
of the truth is unbounded in mind and
heart, he goes beyond the fact of illusions
and content of his own ignorance .
Training and Advancement in Oikado is a
slow process founded on traditional princi-
ples and stages canvassed herein. These are
synchronized with educational systems,
career development and personal advance-
ment. The drive is to go beyond the limita-
tions of techniques and that of the style/
system. To that end learning in Oikado is not
short term exercise. The phases of develop-
ment and advancement are strictly observed
when we pass our students into higher status
of rank.
Kirikami Phase – Black Belt 1st
– 4th
Dan.
One is required to practice with total physi-
cal, mental and spiritual commitment. This
stage is strict! As it ensures maintenance of
style standards. It takes several years.
You are required to demonstrate a scholarly
attitude. Much assessment is placed on com-
passion, attitude, humility, obedience, self-
sacrifice, and respect for human values, life,
family and loyalty.
Kyoshi Phase – at this stage one must
demonstrate requisites of a true disciple and
potential master. Once this has been ascer-
tained you are conferred title of Kyoshi. It
could be anytime from 5th
– 9th
Dan Black
Belt. At this level you have permission to
search for more knowledge of techniques,
theories independently and to innovate, in-
corporate, adjust under honor of your mentor
and the school and that of your own.
It is through the above phases that one can
learn, train and develop for many years in
order to acquire the ultimate honor of master
hood. This requires extreme perseverance.
You will need patience as it is a question of
time and rightful quest in The Way of Oikado.
Mokuruku Phase – introduction to the in-
tense study of theories, techniques, strate-
gies and weapons until the student attains
unquestionable depth and insight. At this
stage you must demonstrate confidence,
maturity, perfection and foresight. This
stage prepares you for master hood level.
Menko Kaiden Phase – introduction to new
strategies and techniques. One must
demonstrate abilities and apply techniques
and demonstrate interpretation, teach oth-
ers (mandatory requirement). One is re-
quired to incorporate techniques, adjust
them and comment on innovations. You also
receive salient secrets and are expected to
maintain them throughout life. This stage
prepares you to master hood (Kyoshi).
Kigurai Phase – here much philosophy is
emphasized in addition to maintaining
standards of previous phases. Various theo-
ries of techniques and warfare are taught.
Local & External Internships Opening a window for our Youthful Black
belts to explore martial arts across a vari-
ety of styles, systems and schools.
Dan candidates are required to go for
internship at various levels of their devel-
opment. This requirement is mandatory
and internship report submitted as part
requirement for Dan Test & Grading.
Remember:: a black belt is a white belt
who never quit.
This is Oikado
Osu! Osu! Osu!
It is a requirement for all OIKADO at brown
and black belts to undergo a series of train-
ing attachments with various organizations
regionally and internationally. These attach-
ments are intended to offer a combination of:
1.Exposure to training methodologies and
strategies. 2. Opportunity to compare.
3. Opportunity to train outside the ambit of
OIKADO 4. An option to train and be graded
where possible 5. Rank recognition
6. Membership registration
7. Attend courses in refereeing and judging
8. Friendship and brotherhood in budo.
TRAINING AND ADVANCEMENT IN OIKADO
Phases of Development and Advancement: Black Belt Dan Levels
Page 10 S O L O M Z I
Training and advancement in Oikiru Ryu
Karate Jitsu Do (OIKADO) is a holistic ap-
proach. It covers a wide range of teaching
methodologies from field of education and as
a system it has amalgamated a number of
martial arts styles and systems. To that end
an Oikadoka is required to read, research,
train in and practice across a wide variety of
styles and systems to their disposal. This is
mandatory because as you advance into the
ranks of Black Belt and higher Black Belt lev-
els one would be required to demonstrate a
diverse martial arts knowledge base.
Training in Oikado therefore encompasses
the following.
1.Educational System – in our teaching we
utilize advances in educational teaching
methods. This is particularly true in learner-
centered approaches and holistic issues. It is
therefore important that an Oikadoka is con-
versant with teaching-learning concepts.
2.Career Development – advancement in
OIKADO is treated as a career development
program. In addition it takes into account
career progression both in the field of work
and in the martial arts halls. We are fully
aware that some of our practitioners are not
academically gifted. To that end training and
excelling in the arts should offer them a win-
dow for both personal development and
career development opportunity as instruc-
tors.
3.Personal Advancement – our training
encourages personal growth and develop-
ment. There is the great concept of personal
style and Oikado takes cognizance of that.
4.Belt Rankings- in Oikado practitioners go
through several belt rankings and levels of
advancement. We need to realize that belts
are symbolical, inspirational and to some
indicate level of personal development.
5.In Oikado students’ aptitudinal develop-
ment and progression is mandatory. To that
end student development and progression is
closely assessed through examination of
your assimilation of physical techniques
(kihon), intellectual growth (as would ob-
served when you teach or write articles,
present papers in martial arts), application
(bunkai-odo), spiritual growth and enlight-
enment.

I have always perceived Dr Makgabenyana
to be a dedicated teacher and exponents of
the martial arts and have known some of his
highly dedicated students including Kyoshi
Moses Kgosibodiba and Dr. Lekoko Kenosi,
who were both my peers at secondary
school and university.
I first personally met Bra Pat as he was com-
monly known in Lobatse in 1986; BU had
known of him through other people in Lo-
batse had actually attended primary school
with one of his youngest brother, so he was a
lot older than me. When we met, he had been
on a break from his law studies due to per-
sonal reasons. Both of us were going to go to
the University of Botswana in August of that
year; he to continue with his law degree and I
to start my first year. We were in the mean-
time teaching at the Lobatse Secondary
School on a part-time basis.
I taught English whilst he taught History. He
was the most relaxed and easy going charac-
ter in the staffroom and despite the age dif-
ference we became friends and he always
called me Bra Steve, which he continues to
do today.
We meet once in a while to discuss a lot of
things including his ongoing projects in mar-
tial arts education in Botswana such as the
books and manuals he is writing or otherwise
preparing.

This must be observed so that students submitted for Regional and Na- tional Gradings are being considered for high- er Kyu ranks. This also saves cost in terms of grading fees to the dojo and student. The Oikado Membership booklet is mandato- ry. In the kohai ranks it will be issued once and covers grading endorsements up to Shodan. A decision has been taken that Certificate of Rank for Kyu will only be issued at National Gradings. That regions will issue own at re- gional gradings. To that end Regional Chiefs must liaise with Certificate Project champion so that Oikado Regional Certificate of Rank are produced. In our quest for peace and in serving each other we all become free. Osu! We are constrained by resources to fulfill greater Oikado goals. Availability of dojo space, capital, demographics and geo- graphical distances. This presents a chal- lenge to regular technical support and teaching. Hence the importance of photo- graphic and video evidence of one’s train- ing will take center stage in the near future. Regular submission of papers and articles to Oikado journals, news letters, Facebook, whatsApp and to various international groups. Adherence and compliance to this approach mandatory. Due to resource constraints Oikado is de- centralizing. Licensing, Authority and Grad- ing Rights will be passed to Regional Chiefs and Dojo sensei. Oikado Grading Schedules will be observed as would be advised by honbou from time to time. Hanshi through Kyoshi and Technical Board will release the Oikado Teaching & Assessment Syllabus. Certainly Regional, National and Honbou Gradings will be maintained. That grading into Dan ranks is sanctioned by honbou. Grading into Yondan and above is at hon- bou by Chief Instructor assisted by Kyoshi and the Technical Council. Dojo sensei have been authorized to pro- mote kohai regularly. Where a dojo re- ceives regular teaching and instruction from a sensei at least 3 days of the week, sensei are expected to promote their students once Grassroots Development Program 175-125 words Regional Updates 100-150 words Martial arts schools world wide survive through having development structures. In Botswana various sporting codes run a BNSC program called “Re ba Bona Ha”, a youth development program of the affiliates of BNSC. The Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) in their drive to meet up with youth development milestones have a “Project 1000” in which their target is to establish dojo in at least 1000 public schools by 2016. In Oikado we call it The Grassroots Develop- ment Program. It dates back to 1990-2000 when we ran the Schools Karate Champion- ships and the Nation-wide Coaching and Training Clinics. These grassroots activities are alive. It is hoped that the youth champi- onships will be re-introduced in 2015 resources permitting. Regions and dojo are required to attract membership in particular in the age brackets of 5-12, 13-16, 17-23 and the seniors. Through the Adopt-A-School Campaign, Oikado Sensei have been challenged to adopt a school, open a karate club with and offer regular tech- nical support and instruction. Regions and sensei must report regularly to Hanshi and Kyoshi. Osu! Osu! Osu! Martial Arts Teaching History: 1972 Saint Joseph’s College Karate Club, Kgale Gaborone and to various institutions in Botswana up to present. 1980-81 Kwaluzeni University Swaziland 1984 Bulawayo Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) 1975-1986 Established the Fukayama Kung Fu School of Martial Arts, Lobatse, Botswana. This became the forerunner of the present Page 5Volume 1 Rewind 1989: “ Hanshi did not confine instruc- tion to the dojo. Learning went on everywhere all the time you were with him. One day in 1989 after training, Motshegetsi sensei and I were escorting him out of campus. He lodged in extension 14. He gave us money to buy him something from the university tuckshop. We were gone for less than two minutes and when we returned he was nowhere to be found. We knew it was a lesson and a challenge. We were running around all the possible routes he could have taken but failed to locate him. We took our search off-campus, hoping to overtake him and even went all the way to his house, more than a kilometer away but did not find him. We gave up, but had learned our lesson as young black belts. We never talked about it but for me, it was a lesson on “evasion” a survival technique.” Shihan Ranko B. Motlalekgosi “Hanshi identified the True Spirit of Mar- tial Arts, and nurtured it earlier on in learning. This is an attribute that we should crave for. It is through Hanshi' meticulous attention to this detail that a lot of us who thought martial arts was all about being rough and macho were first taught to be submissive. I would dare say in the late eighties weeding off misuse of our techniques had the severest of pun- ishment. Such was a necessary teaching. It also dawns in me that a lot of tech- niques of Oikado were not taught to peo- ple who would get into trouble with the techniques later in life”. Shihan Dr. Patrick Masokwane “Hanshi has an innate mechanism of ensur- ing that all his children engaged each other. It is interesting that today "any student of OIKADO has something to learn from other students of OIKADO". In other words Hanshi deposited a huge Martial Arts knowledge base on all of us”. Dintle “The key perspective that Hanshi put forth in us is emphasizing transcendental and trans- lational martial arts, some perception that does not lead to the artist being left at one dimension of Martial Arts”. Maburu “It is amazing even after months of no con- versation he would address the student’s worries including the latest concerns”.

OIKADO BEGINNINGS : HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 1939:- SHIDOSHI YAMADA TOHEI AND SHI- DOSHI KIMURA TODANA MET AT KYO- DO,OSAKA AND DISCUSSED THE POSSIBILITY OF INTRODUCING A SYSTEM OF MARTIAL ARTS THAT WOULD BE TRANSCEDENTAL IN TECH- NIQUE,CHARACTER AND SPIRITUALI- TY.SHIDOSHI YAMADA SPECIALISED IN THE YAMAGUCHI CLAN FAMILY STYLE OF NINJUTSU AND TODANA IN THE OIKEN-KATO HOTO- JITSU,WHICH SPECIALISED IN WEAPONRY AND ZEN SYSTEM PHILOSOPHY. YAMADA TOHEI WAS THE DIRECT DESCEND- ANT OF THE FOUNDER OF THE CLOSED SE- CRET CLAN OF THE TOHEI CHIJITSU SHOREI YAMADA- ONE OF THE GREATEST CLANDES- TINE ORGANISATIONS OF THE BLACK NINJAS OF THE MOUNTAINS OF THE YAMAGUCHI. SHIDOSHI KIMURA TODANA WAS THE LAST OF THE DESCENDANTS OF THE GRANDMASTERS OF THE SAMURAI CLAN OF THE EUNEYISHI.THE TWO SHIDOSHI BEGAN RECRUITING THE VARI- OUS SYSTEMS OF THE OUCANA KOBU-JITSU AND THE KUNG FU OF THE NORTHERN SHAO- LIN THROUGH THE MONK TE-MO CHUNG. IT IS THROUGH THE COMBINATION OF THEIR BEST TECHNIQUES THAT THE BASIC CONCEPT OF THE COMMON FACETS OF STYLES EMERGED UNDER THE FOLLOWING PRICIPLES. 1. THE STANDARD OBJECT TO IMPART AND IMPORT MARTIAL ARTS IS MAN. 2. ALL MARTIAL ARTS ARE A CREATION OF COMMON DENOMINATIONS OF FIST, KICK, BLOCK AND STANCE AND THEIR SUBDIVI- SIONS. 3. ALL MARTIAL ARTS ARE THE FALCRUM OF PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL DE- VELOPMENT IRRESPECTIVE OF THE METHOD- FROM THESE PRINCIPLES EMERGED THE CON- CEPT OF “THE UNIFYING FIST OF THE WAY OF THE TECHNIQUES”, OIKIRU RYU KARATE JITSU DO[ OIKADO ]. SENSEI KOHEMI TASHIMATA OF THE SCHOOL OF KIJU ENJOINED THE “UNIFYING FIST” AND INTRODUCED THE FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF THE TECHNIQUES OF NINJITSU BO-KU JITSU, THE ART OF THE INVINCIBLE WARRIOR THUS TRANSFORMING THE SYSTEM INTO ONE OF THE FORMIDABLE SYSTEM THAT WHICH IS TRANSCEDENTAL IN NATURE, FUNCTION AND STRUC- TURE. 1. JUIJITSU 2. KUNG FU 3. NINJUTSU JUITSU. 1940:- THE BREAKAWAY SENSEI OF THE SHOTOKAN, O’SENSEI SHIMUZI HAYAMATA JOINED THE CLAN AND INTRODUCED THE ASSIMILATION OF THE KYO- HAN WAY FOLLOWED BY THE ENJOINING OF THE DARK TEMPLE TEACHER SIFU SHI-HI JONG SU WHO KEPT THE SECRETS OF THE IRON FIST SYSTEM. IT IS IN 1942,DURING THE WAR SHIDOSHI DR.LOIUS H.FRIED MET WITH SENSEI SANA KANO, THE RELA- TIVE OF THE FOUNDER OF JUDO(DR JIGARO KANO).IN THE ARMY OPERATION THAT THESE INTRODUCED TO THE SYSTEM OF THE UNIFYING FIST, SINGLE FIST STYLE AND THE INTRODUCTION LED TO THE MEET- ING OF THE COUNCIL MEMBERS IN THE 1945. THIS INTRODUCTION IN THE WEST AND TO THE REST OF THE WORLD WAS WITH STRICT REQUIREMENTS THAT ITS TEACHINGS BE BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCY OF THE TREE UNIFORM SYS- TEMS OF THE TRADITIONAL ARTS OF KUNG FU, KARATE AND NINJUITSU.THEREON, THE SYSTEM SPREAD UNDER THE OATHED PRINCI- PLE OF THE YAMAGUCHI-NINJUITSU WHICH ESPOUSED THAT 1. SILENCE AND SECRECY IS THE STRENGTH OF FORTITUDE 2. ONLY THE CONCERNED AND SELECTED SHOULD BE TAUGHT THE INTRINSIC ASPECT OF THE UNIFYING FISTS 3. THE TEAC HINGS SHOULD B E TRANSCEDENTAL IN THE WHOLE CONTEXT. IN THE YEAR 1960:- THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF MARTIAL ARTISTS WAS FORMU- LATED IN THE RHIKYU ISLANDS AND THE OVERALL DECISION WAS BASED ON THE WESTERN/EASTERN DIVIDE WITH THE MAIN HEAD OFFICE SITUATE IN OSAKA,JAPAN AND THE SECOND SUBSIDIARY OFFICE IN FLORI- DA,USA HEADED BY GRANDMASTER DR LOIUS H. To that end black belt Dan levels are equated to academic qualifications. Guidelines ob- served. (see page 7) Oikadoka kohai who are in secondary schools, college, university and working must start a culture of martial arts dis- course. Dojo and sensei must encourage and develop and enforce in their stu- dents. Most sensei and dojo are failing embrace The Oikado Way as early as in the kyu ranks, certainly mandatory for black belts cadre. It is going to be diffi- cult if not impossible for Oikado to yield cadre into Godan and above, yet we have capacity and indeed educated Yudansha. Oikado recognizes academic achieve- ments and requires Yudansha to have their academic qualifications commensu- rate with their rank status. Oikado Sandan, 3rd Dan Black belt: it marks ascendency into black belt of in- structorship status. Full status of Sensei. It comes with huge responsibility. A researcher, writer and above all together with Shidan and Godan they are tech- nical custodians. They carry and person- ify the Technical Gold Standard of Oi- kado. Their assessment is very strict. To that end their visibility in terms of par- ticipation by having a dojo, hosting and running Gashuku, seminars, boot camps are important. Participating in and en- couraging martial discourse, debates, discussions and posting on Oikado and general martial arts important mile- stones. • 10. Training and Advancement in Oikado is a slow process founded on traditional princi- ples and stages canvassed herein. These are synchronized with educational systems, career development and personal advance- ment. The drive is to go beyond the limita- tions of techniques and that of the style/ system. To that end learning in Oikado is not short term exercise. The phases of develop- ment and advancement are strictly observed when we pass our students into higher status of rank. Kirikami Phase – Black Belt 1st – 4th Dan. One is required to practice with total physi- cal, mental and spiritual commitment. This stage is strict! As it ensures maintenance of style standards. It takes several years. You are required to demonstrate a scholarly attitude. Much assessment is placed on com- passion, attitude, humility, obedience, self- sacrifice, and respect for human values, life, family and loyalty. Kyoshi Phase – at this stage one must demonstrate requisites of a true disciple and potential master. Once this has been ascer- tained you are conferred title of Kyoshi. It could be anytime from 5th – 9th Dan Black Belt. At this level you have permission to search for more knowledge of techniques, theories independently and to innovate, in- corporate, adjust under honor of your mentor and the school and that of your own. It is through the above phases that one can learn, train and develop for many years in order to acquire the ultimate honor of master hood. This requires extreme perseverance. You will need patience as it is a question of time and rightful quest in The Way of Oikado. Mokuruku Phase – introduction to the in- tense study of theories, techniques, strate- gies and weapons until the student attains unquestionable depth and insight. At this stage you must demonstrate confidence, maturity, perfection and foresight. This stage prepares you for master hood level. Menko Kaiden Phase – introduction to new strategies and techniques. One must demonstrate abilities and apply techniques and demonstrate interpretation, teach oth- ers (mandatory requirement). One is re- quired to incorporate techniques, adjust them and comment on innovations. You also receive salient secrets and are expected to maintain them throughout life. This stage prepares you to master hood (Kyoshi). Kigurai Phase – here much philosophy is emphasized in addition to maintaining standards of previous phases. Various theo- ries of techniques and warfare are taught. Local & External Internships Opening a window for our Youthful Black belts to explore martial arts across a vari- ety of styles, systems and schools. Dan candidates are required to go for internship at various levels of their devel- opment. This requirement is mandatory and internship report submitted as part requirement for Dan Test & Grading. Remember:: a black belt is a white belt who never quit. This is Oikado Osu! Osu! Osu! It is a requirement for all OIKADO at brown and black belts to undergo a series of train- ing attachments with various organizations regionally and internationally. These attach- ments are intended to offer a combination of: 1.Exposure to training methodologies and strategies. 2. Opportunity to compare. 3. Opportunity to train outside the ambit of OIKADO 4. An option to train and be graded where possible 5. Rank recognition 6. Membership registration 7. Attend courses in refereeing and judging 8. Friendship and brotherhood in budo. TRAINING AND ADVANCEMENT IN OIKADO Phases of Development and Advancement: Black Belt Dan Levels Page 10 S O L O M Z I Training and advancement in Oikiru Ryu Karate Jitsu Do (OIKADO) is a holistic ap- proach. It covers a wide range of teaching methodologies from field of education and as a system it has amalgamated a number of martial arts styles and systems. To that end an Oikadoka is required to read, research, train in and practice across a wide variety of styles and systems to their disposal. This is mandatory because as you advance into the ranks of Black Belt and higher Black Belt lev- els one would be required to demonstrate a diverse martial arts knowledge base. Training in Oikado therefore encompasses the following. 1.Educational System – in our teaching we utilize advances in educational teaching methods. This is particularly true in learner- centered approaches and holistic issues. It is therefore important that an Oikadoka is con- versant with teaching-learning concepts. 2.Career Development – advancement in OIKADO is treated as a career development program. In addition it takes into account career progression both in the field of work and in the martial arts halls. We are fully aware that some of our practitioners are not academically gifted. To that end training and excelling in the arts should offer them a win- dow for both personal development and career development opportunity as instruc- tors. 3.Personal Advancement – our training encourages personal growth and develop- ment. There is the great concept of personal style and Oikado takes cognizance of that. 4.Belt Rankings- in Oikado practitioners go through several belt rankings and levels of advancement. We need to realize that belts are symbolical, inspirational and to some indicate level of personal development. 5.In Oikado students’ aptitudinal develop- ment and progression is mandatory. To that end student development and progression is closely assessed through examination of your assimilation of physical techniques (kihon), intellectual growth (as would ob- served when you teach or write articles, present papers in martial arts), application (bunkai-odo), spiritual growth and enlight- enment. Attainment of Black Belt 1st Dan in Oikado signifies potential to transcend other ranks until one achieves true master hood, profi- ciency, analytic mind, etc. Tiger Dojo Group Botswana Ofentse Setiko

Envi- ronments that help nurture and grow the children and young teens under our care and instruction. Dojo must take step further and document each child presenting challenges in terms social, personal, educational and careers. Vulnerable, orphans, delinquents, ab- sentism both at home and school must be known. To that end dojo sensei and ad- ministration must take responsibility and Adopt-a-needy child. I first personally met Bra Pat as he was com- monly known in Lobatse in 1986; BU had known of him through other people in Lo- batse had actually attended primary school with one of his youngest brother, so he was a lot older than me. When we met, he had been on a break from his law studies due to per- sonal reasons. Both of us were going to go to the University of Botswana in August of that year; he to continue with his law degree and I to start my first year. We were in the mean- time teaching at the Lobatse Secondary School on a part-time basis. I taught English whilst he taught History. He was the most relaxed and easy going charac- ter in the staffroom and despite the age dif- ference we became friends and he always called me Bra Steve, which he continues to do today. We meet once in a while to discuss a lot of things including his ongoing projects in mar- tial arts education in Botswana such as the books and manuals he is writing or otherwise preparing.
