Abstract
Background Presentations at scientific congresses and
symposiums can be in two different forms: poster or oral
presentation. Each method has some advantages and dis-
advantages. To combine the advantages of oral and poster
presentations, a new presentation type was conceived:
‘‘video in poster.’’
Methods The top of the portable digital video display
(DVD) player is opened 180° to keep the screen and the
body of the DVD player in the same plane. The poster is
attached to the DVD player and a window is made in the
poster to expose the screen of the DVD player so the screen
appears as a picture on the poster. Then this video in poster
is fixed to the panel. When the DVD player is turned on,
the video presentation of the surgical procedure starts.
Results Several posters were presented at different med-
ical congresses in 2007 using the ‘‘video in poster’’
technique, and they received poster awards.
Conclusions The video in poster combines the advanta-
ges of both oral and poster presentations.
Introduction
Scientists use two forms of presentation, poster or oral, to
share their work with their colleagues during congresses
and symposiums [1, pp 182-192]. Each method of pre-
sentation has advantages and disadvantages. The number of
scientific studies accepted as oral presentations in a con-
gress is usually relatively small because of time limitations.
Oral presentations are superior to posters with audiovisual
effects. However, the presenting author reaches only those
attending the session and the presentation has to be com-
pleted in a short time. Posters lack the advantages of a live
speech and video effects. Only pictures and graphics can be
used as visual adjuncts in posters. On the other hand,
posters have no time limitations and the number of atten-
dants at a congress that view the poster is incomparably
higher than those gathered in a room for an oral presen-
tation. The number of viewers of a poster increases with its
attractive features.
If video is added to a poster, the advantages of oral
presentation and poster presentation can be combined.
Thus, a presentation which is attractive, interesting,
effective, and richer in terms of visual effects can be
achieved. I aimed to create a presentation technique that
combines the advantages of both presentation types and
developed ‘‘video in poster’’ [2].
Materials and methods
An edited DVD recording of the surgical procedure is
placed into the portable DVD player. The top of the player
is opened 180° to keep the screen and the body of the DVD
player in the same plane (Fig. 1). The poster is attached to
the DVD player and a window is created in the poster to

as a picture on the poster (Fig. 2). Then this video in poster
is fixed to the display panel. When the DVD player is
turned on, the video presentation of the surgical procedure
starts. Volume is set low so as not to bother viewers of the
other posters, but if needed the volume can be turned up
and audio effects can be used during the presentation. This
type of poster has many possible audiovisual presentation
features without any time limitations (Fig. 3). Video in
poster is lightweight and can easily be put on a poster
stand. There must be power outlets available in the poster
exhibition room. (A streaming video of this technique is
available through Springer Open Access at http://www.

Results
Many different posters were presented at different con-
gresses during 2007 using the ‘‘video in poster’’ technique.
First, video in poster was used at the 3rd Cukurova Colo-
Proctology and Stoma-Therapy Symposium in Adana,
Turkey, in April 2007. It received the best poster award of
that congress. The other video in poster was presented at
the 8th National Endoscopic & Laparoscopic Surgery
Congress in Antalya, Turkey, in July 2007. It too received
the best poster award of that congress. Another video in
poster was presented at the 19th International Conference
of the Society for Medical Innovation and Technology
(SMIT2007) in Sendai, Japan, in November 2007, and this
poster was awarded with mention.
Discussion
Scientific works are presented at congresses in either oral
or poster format. The aim of both presentation methods is
to present the work clearly and concisely. During an oral
session, the presenting author can use video recordings and
photos to explain the study. Video presentation helps the
speaker keep the attention of the audience and make the
study more understandable [1]. However, oral presentation
time is limited and the topic has to be explained in a short
time.

3. Posters are exhibition panels that scientists use to
describe their studies and experiments [1, pp 189-192]. One
can use photos, figures, and graphics to present the work
but not video recordings. Thus, describing a topic such as a
surgical procedure on a poster may not be as clear as a
video presentation. On the other hand, the presentation
time of a poster is not limited like an oral presentation. It
can be on exhibit during an entire day or sometimes during
the whole length of a congress. Thus, the work can be
shared by a large number of attendants.
Using ‘‘video in poster,’’ the advantages of both pre-
sentation methods are combined. It is a new presentation
alternative for the scientists who want to share their sci-
entific studies or recordings of surgical procedures. Video
recordings of open surgery, diagnostic and interventional
laparoscopy, endoscopy, arthroscopy, angiography, and
several other fields of medicine can be used in ‘‘video in
poster.’’ Also slideshows of several fields such as pathol-
ogy, radiology, dermatology, infectious disease, and
neurology can be used in ‘‘video in poster.’’ The presen-
tation of video recordings of surgical or experimental
techniques may be useful for surgical training and
increasing surgical skills. We have not used audio effects
but have used subtitles in the video in posters that we have
presented. Sound can be turned on but headphones would
be required in order to prevent noise interference in the
congress hall if most posters moved to this format.
I propose that ‘‘video in poster’’ be considered for pre-
sentation method during scientific meetings. In the era of
information, the amount of knowledge increases as much
as it is shared. ‘‘Video in poster’’ serves this goal.
