3. Context of the magazine
The Big Issue is a street magazine which was founded by John Bird and
Gordon Roddick in September 1991. It was a response to the increasing
numbers of homeless people living in New York. It is sold to homeless
individuals so they can earn a legitimate income.
In 2001, the magazine nearly sold around 300,00 copies. Today the Big
Issue is an award-winning publication, it has inspired over 120 similar
magazines in 35 worldwide countries.
4. Vendors
The magazine helps to support homeless people by helping them to take
control their lives by tackling issues leading to homelessness.
The magazine is produced and sold to vendors in Australia, Ireland, South
korea, South Africa, Japan, Namibia, Kenya, Malawi and Taiwan.
The magazine has helped over 92,000 vendors earn
£115 million since 1991. Currently it is estimated
that there are around 1500 vendors, last year the
magazine helped them earn £5.5 million.
5. The Big Issue Foundation
The foundation was founded in 1955. It is an
independent funded charity which works with the
Big Issue vendors. It is made to support vendors
and help them rebuild their lives to create a
better future for them.
They work to help improve areas like
employment, training, education, learning, health
care, housing and personal development.
6. The Big Issue Shop
The Big Issue shop has an aim to “offer a platform for
social trading that will make ethical and social shopping
a truly accessible option for consumers, giving them the
opportunity to use their spending power to make a
positive difference to the world they live in.”
Every product traded on the site has ‘Social Echo’,
meaning that the items purchased will create a positive
social outcome. The products are produced from eco-
friendly materials The money raised could give a street
child a home and an education.
