1. My placement learning goals
I have identified and agreed placement goals with my manager and Academic Placement Adviser (APA). These include the personal and business goals I plan to achieve
from my placement and are related to the learning from my course. I will include a minimum of 1 goal in each section (knowledge, skill, graduate attribute and business).
This will form the basis of my first placement keep-in-touch- review with my Academic Placement Adviser.
1.a. Personal Goals: This is what I want to develop professionally and personally from my placement. These goals are based around knowledge, skills and graduate
Attributes. These are flexible and may change throughout my time on placement. I will record all goals and how I progress towards them in this portfolio. Where
necessary I will include additional evidence to best demonstrate how I work towards achieving these goals or to show what I achieve.
During my placement the areas of knowledge I want to develop/ improve are:

So when I return to University, I can
use those skills in my final year lab
projects to move it along quicker, in
case I have to repeat anything I may
have more time left over to re-run it.
I can carry out procedures quicker than
I used to when I first came to my
placement.
I will also know if I have achieved this
when I have gone back to university
and I carry on working in the same
manner that I have been working at my

I want to understand;
The benefits Chemistry has in the
industry.
How it effects the industry and the
product being produced
My knowledge of how the industry I
work in widens and I am able to see
the effects my work in the lab has on
the products being produced from the
industry as a whole.
Relates to the module I did in
second year (Chemistry and

University Graduate Attribute:
Confidence
I want to be able to take a sample
and run it on an instrument without
having supervision there or having to
go and get someone to ask if I am
doing it right.
On the other hand, if I do need
anyone’s help, I want to be able to
ask for it without feeling
embarrassed or feeling like I’m not
capable.
I am able to take a sample either in my
placement or back at university and go
over to a machine, run it and then look
at those results and know what they
mean (understand them) or use them
to get more results from another
machine.

University Graduate Attribute:
Creativity
To be able to “think outside of the
box” for any problem-solving issues
that have come up regarding the
industry I’m working for.
I can use resources found in ASTM, ISO
or any other specification and be able
to come up with a validated solution
based off of those documents.

University Graduate Attribute:
Resilience
Not taking it too personal any
mistakes and problems that come up
within my work. Making sure I can let
go any issues or mistakes I’ve made
and learn from them for any future
problems.
I can look straight for the solution of
the problems; I keep myself calm and
only think about what I can do to solve
this issue. I manage to keep those
involved in the situation around me
calm and collected, rather than
jumping to any conclusions on how to
solve the problem.
Within project work, working on
problem solving skills
Also incorporating people skills,
adapting the way I speak to people
about situations that have arisen.
Trying to keep them calm and
myself calm.

Course Graduate Attribute:
Integrity
Having integrity in the workplace will
help to have a close
bond/relationship to those I work
with on a daily basis but also those I
see occasionally.
Leading by my morals makes me
more open to being honest with the
people I am dealing with.
I can deal with any person (new or old)
with a problem or issue they have.
They’ll be able to trust me with their
issue as they’ll know how I am and
where my morals lie.
Team building and skills
development when working in
teams with any projects for work.

Course Graduate Attribute:
Driven to Succeed
Making sure I am consistently
thinking about the next step and the
next task I can “master”.
I want to push myself to be able to
perform tasks to the best of my
ability and succeed in that task so I
can go onto the next level higher up
where it will become more
challenging.
When I can perform all the routine
tasks inside and outside of the lab
(shop floor) without much or any
supervision.
Also, when I am able to learn a task
and perform it straight away from the
previous knowledge that may be useful
in other tasks I’ve done in the past.
Independent work, continuously
wanting to learn new skills on new
machines will make it easier when
I return to university or in the
future to the workplace, to get a
grasp on new techniques and skills
when performing the work tasks.
Yes/Ongoing
Course Graduate Attribute:
Curious
Pushing myself to ask more questions
on the topics that interest me and
asking to see new things. Every bit of
experience whether good or bad is
good to have under my belt as it
gives me more of an understanding
of what I want to do when I leave
university and where I would want to
go.
I’ve been asking my managers to show
me new things that aren’t specifically
to do with Chemistry. I’ve been getting
involved with NDT, mechanical testing
and metallurgy.
I’ve even for a DILO event planned to
go and spend a day in the design
department
Having a wide spread of options
will help me to expand my point of
view on analysis in the future.
Having some understanding of
NDT and the metallurgy side of
things will change my view from
being more biased to the
chemistry end result/findings.

1.b. Employer / Business Objectives: During my placement I will work with my employer(s) to support the goals of the organisation. Here are specific areas on which I will
focus my time, effort and work. During my time on placement these may change and I will record any changes here as this demonstrates the many different areas I work in.
This is not about success it's about getting as much experience as I can. Where necessary I will include additional evidence to best demonstrate how I work towards
achieving these goals or to show what I achieve.
During my placement I will support the needs/requirement/objectives/outcomes of my employer / business by:

Learn how to perform the
weekly analysis tasks from the
team.
Benefit to the company: I will
be another employer capable of
performing the weekly tasks
and therefore can provide cover
for any of them.
I want to be able to confidently and
independently carry out the
analytical procedures done in the lab
on a weekly basis so I will feel like I
am contributing to the team as much
as everyone else is when doing the
weekly analysis.
I have my co-workers leaving me alone
to do the analysis and trusting the
results I get. Also asking me to run
certain analysis if they are too busy,
showing me that they trust me enough
to complete the required task.
It relates to project work in the lab
by making me more confident in
my own abilities to perform tasks
as safely and independently as I
can, so when it comes to going
back to the lab at university and
doing a 6 weeks lab project, I can
carry it out with ease.
Ongoing
Projects:
1) Standardisation of the
chemicals
2) Overrun and recipe
investigation
3) Rewrite of lab
instruction
Benefit to the company: These
investigations will be left to the
lab for their use along with my
typed-up lab instructions for
project 1.
I want to have an impact on the
department (and the company as a
whole) in a positive way that will
help out all of my colleagues and
newcomers in the lab.
If any of my work whether being
independent or supported work is of
any help then I’d consider it a
successful task
When my colleagues refer to my work
or ask me about any certain topics I am
working on.
By my colleagues referring to my work
or asking me about it I will know that
my projects are contributing to the
department like everyone else’s work.
University projects and post
project work like lab reports,
procedures and reviews. Having
this 13-month experience writing
real-life reports and procedures
has allowed me to have a better
understanding of what it needs to
include. Therefore, this will be a
benefit to myself in my final year
research project.

Getting a better understanding
of software on different
instruments, (IC, ICP, OMNIS,
FTIR)
In order for all of us to get a better
understanding of how the software
on the IC and FTIR, a workshop
session was made where
ThermoFischer came in and taught us
the basics of how to operate the
software. I gave myself the task of
making notes in these sessions and
then typing them up in our own
version of a “How to Guide”. I
created this “How to Guide” in our
google drive and shared it with
everyone else so if they needed to
perform a certain task and forgot
how to do it then they could refer to
that guide for help.
Some of the sections in the “How to
Guides” were difficult to write as I
didn’t have the best understanding of
both machines compared to everyone
else’s understanding. Nevertheless, I
did my own research to help my
understanding and looked through
other people’s notes as I may have
missed anything that was said. I then
managed to finish the How to Guide for
the FTIR and IC.
I feel it would have benefitted
myself (especially writing the How
to Guide) by not being embarrassed
or afraid to ask the tutor who came
in anything I didn’t quite
understand.

By observing different peoples’ ways
of working when it comes to lab work

Get a better understanding of
how chemistry works in the
industry – more specifically
how it ties in with building a
wing of a plane.
As we deal with a lot, if not all, the
analysis of the wings, I wanted to
understand more about the inner
workings and how it is assembled to
form a complete wing. Having
projects that are heavily involved
with the creation of the wing made it
easier to try and understand but also
showed great challenges as I felt I
was lacking in the required
knowledge unlike my co-workers. I
gave myself an action to try really
hard to focus on what people are
saying and ask when I am lost and
don’t understand what has been said
or done. Thankfully, the people hear
at Airbus are more than happy to
show and tell their knowledge on
what is going on to help me grasp an
idea of what they’re saying.
A big challenged I faced when trying to
learn and engage more about the wing
was to learn all the abbreviated
phrases. It was quite heard to get my
head around what all of them meant
and what they are related to but my
company had a handy website called
lexinet where I could type in the
abbreviation to find out what possible
meanings it could have. After time the
abbreviations became more natural to
hear and say in my everyday
vocabulary.
Possible doing some own individual
reading on any topic I come across
that I don’t understand and don’t
feel afraid to ask for help or
elaboration on any issue I have.

ICP, IC, Titrator unit, FTIR
When putting analysis onto the
machines on a Monday morning
sometimes it might not go as planned
and we need to re run some analysis
or check the machine for anything
that may be causing the issue.
A lot of the time it can be down to
loose wires or cables stopping
aspiration and dosing of samples or
something just not entered correctly
like a position number on a sample
tray. It is our job then to find what
the issue is and then fix it which can
be anything from screwing the cable
in properly or placing the sample into
the correct position on the sample
tray. Fixing the issue and getting
better results on the next re run of
the analysis
A lot of the time an issue can arise on
an instrument that you haven’t set off
for the analysis yourself, which can
either go for you or against you. You
can either find the problem straight
away or have to look harder.
Sometimes I have managed to set off
the machine without any issue and
sometimes I haven’t set it off right and
the results for the analysis have been
wrong. I have had colleagues tell me
where I have gone wrong and I have
corrected it when running the analysis
again in the future.
Taking my time and looking at the
situation thinking if I have
everything I need in the right place

or mistakes that could occur.

Attribute: Confidence
Being put into a relatively large office
environment I made it my goal to get to know
everyone and make sure they’re comfortable
with me and I am able to talk to them
confidently about any of the analysis I am
unsure about. By making sure I wasn’t afraid
to ask people for help I am now fully capable
of performing tasks I didn’t know before and
still ask for help on ones I am beginning to
learn.
I feel already only 4/5 months in I can
speak to everyone in the department
and they can speak to me and ask me
questions about any work I have going
on.
I can also grab any one of my
colleagues to discuss anything I need
help with or if something hasn’t gone
to plan when running any of the
analysis.

University Graduate
Attribute: Creativity
Working in an environment such as airbus, my
creative mind was put to the test. I managed
on several occasions to think outside of the
box on project work I was either leading or
supporting on. For example, on my project for
the standardisation of the chemicals in the lab
I was able to avoid having to buy a new
titration electrode for a method and instead
researching and coming up with a new
primary standard that suits the titre being
used and the electrode we currently have.
I found it quite a challenge trying to
figure out what the alternatives could
be as I had gained some sort of tunnel
vision on the project at hand and
needed to break away from that trend
to find a new way to solve the
problem.
Having these issues appear made it
gradually easier to think outside of the
box and since having said issues I have
been able to ask from my colleagues’
things they liked and disliked about
that certain situation and what I could
do better next time
To develop in this area, I believe I
need to reject the tunnel vision
ideology when dealing with a
project and at each step think
about what each outcome could
be making sure I have back up
options and different paths to go
down.

using them on anything to do with the aircraft.
I was sorting through 1 cupboard in particular
and came across acetone wipes in the same
cupboard as compressed air. Even though
there may not be an immediate danger or
hazard spotted with it, there could have been
one. I, along with other chemists, moved the
wipes to the flammable cupboard. This did not
go down well with one individual in the lab.
This incident let to me receiving verbal abuse

to keep a professional manner about myself I
decided to leave the room and go somewhere
else to calm myself down. My colleague who
witnessed what had happened found me and
comforted me. She got my manager and told
her what had happened and we managed to
sit down and sort it out. I decided I didn’t want

Standardising Chemicals
used in the lab
I was given the task to try and standardise
all the chemicals we use in the lab
(chemistry lab, not the metallurgy lab). To
do this I needed to work on the
automated titrator system as most of the
chemicals we use are on there for most of
the analysis done on the surface

A major challenge was trying to figure
of how to write the methods and
operating procedures as I have had no
previous training on the machine so a
lot of the time I was just trying to work
out via trial and error on what worked
and where to go from there.
It was only until the end of the
projects on my final titre I realise
that I didn’t have to use the
primary standard that was
specified in the spec. In future I
would look at trying to save the
company money and look at

methods for each of the 5 titres that are
on the system and then proceed to write
individual operating procedure that
include the method for each titre. Along
with writing the method and procedure I
needed to find out which primary
standards I needed to use and what the
quantity I needed. From there I also
needed to write and insert the equation
to work out the volume, Moles and
Molarity of each titre.
I was able to contact the supplier’s
technical team for support on anything
I was really stuck on but mainly
managed to complete the writing of
everything by myself along with some
support from people who were
working on this project with me.
specifically ones that we would
already have in stock. Another
benefit of this would be saving
more time, since waiting for the
chemicals took around 4 months
due to a shortage and high
demand for them.
Contribute to the work in
the lab (E.g., Investigations,
routine lab jobs in
chemistry and metallurgy)
Starting off in the lab I had only ever
learned theory on majority of the
machines I have dealt with over the past
13 months, so it was quite daunting and,
in some aspects, overwhelming as in
some ways it felt as if I was expected to
know exactly what each machine did and
how it worked. I gave myself the task to
take the time to learn how these
machines worked to then be able to
operate them with full confidence on my
own and perform the weekly analysis
along with project analysis if I was
required to. Within the first 6 months of
my placement, I was already feeling very
confident operating on the machines as I
had completed most if not all my task
capture sheets the company wanted me
to complete before carrying out tasks on
my own. Now coming to the end of my
placement I have full confidence in myself
to carry out the required tasks we receive
daily, weekly and monthly.
A big challenge of mine was dealing
with the very expensive and dangerous
machines as I didn’t want to break
them or hurt myself trying to operate
them.
Thankfully, I had no injuries and didn’t
break any of the machines or any
accessories
Pushing myself that little bit more
to be able to learn all the
machines quicker so I can get stuck
into any projects going on or any
future projects that would be
using any of those machines.

3. Summary of overall performance & achievements - feedforward and action planning
This will form the basis of my final placement keep-in-touch- review with my employer(s) and Academic Placement Adviser (APA). In order to consolidate my learning and
development I will outline the feedback I have received from my employer(s). I will reflect on what I have done while on placement and consider how this relates to and
support the learning on my course. This reflection will then be used as a basis for the completion of relevant sections of my PSP3 e-portfolio.
3. a. Employer(s) Feedforward: This section is for my placement manager/mentor(s) to provide me with feedback on my overall performance and achievement of my goals.
Where possible this should celebrate my successes and provide me with some specific areas of improvement to support future development towards graduation and
beyond. This can be written by my placement manager/mentor(s) or I can input feedback gathered from my placement colleagues or through other means e.g., appraisal.
I will then use these points in development of my Action Plan.
During the first 6 months of Molly’s placement here in Broughton, I was her line manager, from the beginning of Molly’s placement she has shown great interest in the
tasks within the Laboratory, despite joining the team to predominantly focus her internship on Chemistry and gain an understanding of the scope our Chemists endure
here, she was very interested in expanding her knowledge and was keen to understand the role of our Metallurgists, with this in mind, Molly took on board a project to
support her university asks as well as an extensive amount of learning and support to the team.
Without doubt Molly integrated into the team immediately, she has always shown dedication to her role and support to the team and I feel the team have treated her
like one of the team. I personally have been very impressed with Molly’s approach and dedication to her internship so far.
I feel the areas of development for Molly, build confidence - I hope this has grown since January as you’ve become more comfortable with the role, but don’t hesitate to
be involved in the topics outside of the lab (i.e., engage with operations more), speak up more - where you have an issue/request/concern/ success always look to speak
up and be heard. Build networks - Airbus is a perfect place to build networks ensure you get the best out of your placement and get to know people outside of the Lab
team (engage with the wider quality team).
- Kassandra Carr – Previous HO of the Materials Laboratory
I had the pleasure to work with Molly during her internship placement in the Materials Laboratory in Airbus Broughton. She was very organized and grasped our system
very quickly. Despite Chemistry being her area of expertise, she managed her time well enough to engage with other areas of the Laboratory, non as familiar to her, such
as material forensics and mechanical testing. Molly has shown good initiative and has been eager to learn and take new challenges, completing all tasks she has been given
in a very professional manner.
If Molly keeps the good ethics and proactivity she has shown during her placement, I am confident enough that she will succeed in whatever ventures she embarks on.
However, it will be a tremendous pleasure to work with her in the future if she considers the Materials Laboratory in Airbus Broughton when she finishes her degree.

Molly has been a key member of the team and will be missed when returning back to complete her studies. In the short period of time that I have been head of the team
Molly has impressed with her communication style and particularly made a strong impression when presenting a summary of her time spent to the senior quality
leadership team.
Some of the items Molly has brought to the team will be kept in place for the future such as the Lab/NDT website,
- Rob Houghton – HO Quality CDT ISS
Molly has worked extremely hard during her internship with Airbus. She has shown interest in and undertaken investigations in a number of disciplines within the
Materials Laboratory including chemistry, metallurgy and mechanical testing. Whilst undertaking investigations Molly has shown herself to be proactive and able to take
the initiative - skills highly useful in the manufacturing environment.
- Sally Jenkins – Laboratory Operational Specialist
Molly has been a highly valued member of the Airbus Laboratory team. From the off Molly was keen to get involved in as many different projects and work streams in
order to gain as much experience and knowledge from the team. During her team at Airbus, Molly has completed projects within Chemistry, Metallurgy and Mechanical
Testing.
Molly has also been involved in projects outside of the Laboratory department and has widened her network within the Airbus Broughton community including
Women’s Day, Quality Day and STEM talks to primary and secondary schools.
- Dina Campbell – Laboratory Operational Specialist

My placement evaluation: Given the skills, knowledge, attributes and workplace specific awareness I have learned and engaged with during my placement here is a
summary of the key learning I have gained during my placement. I have reflected on key successes of my placement year, and also issues that have arisen, and how I have
addressed these.
Over the 13 months experience I have received at Airbus I have gained the key skills and knowledge needed to work in an industrial material laboratory.
These skills include; Time management, practical organization when running experiments on multiple machines, People and Networking skills. Amongst
reflection upon these skills, I believe I have been relatively successful in incorporating them in my day-to-day life here at Airbus and also using them in
external environments such as social gatherings with work colleagues.
Other successes I have encountered include my projects I carried out within my department setting up the Standardisation of the chemicals in the chemistry
lab along with creating various how-to-guides and procedures for people on pieces of equipment we have or any software update we had installed.
Along with the successes, there have been times issues have risen and I have had to deal with them in a professional manner and keep my composure as a
mature, responsible adult. Fortunately, there wasn’t many issues that I had to deal with that caused me or anyone a problem but when they did occur, I
simply dealt with it by taking myself out of the situation and removing myself from the room or setting to be able to clear my thoughts and come to a
sensible conclusion on what I needed to do to resolve the issue.
14
4. My Employability Action Plan: To continue to improve my learning and support securing graduate level employment I will produce a clear and detailed Action plan
based on my experiences during placement and the feedback received.
Goal: What I need to work on to
improve my graduate employability
Actions required: The steps I need
to take in order to achieve my
career/academic ambitions
Constraints: the challenges /
limitations I could face
Support: the people, organisations,
resources, finance, time etc. needed
Target date:
I will look to
achieve this by
(date)
Speaking up more:
Where I have had an
issue/request/concern/success, I
need to always look to speak up
and be heard.
Take initiative in situations I believe
I can excel at. Speaking my mind
more openly to others about any
ideas or concerns I have with any
projects or any general tasks at
hand
I could face creating a hostile
environment and negative
feedback from people with
different views and ideas which
could possibly affect my future
career at the company
People within my department
would be a big benefit to me as they
will give me the courage to speak
out more to people outside my
department and share my thoughts
and views.
25/09/23 (End
of placement)
And carrying
forward into
everyday
practise
Building Networks:
I need to engage with the wider
teams outside of my departments.
Building those connections will
benefit myself and others who I will
work with if any issues may arise in
Make sure I put myself out there
ask people what they are involved
with in the workplace, getting to
know them and what they can offer
me and what I can offer them
People may get the impression that
I am just getting to know them in
order to just use them for work so I
will have to make it known that
that is not my intention. My main
intention is getting to know people
and helping them if I can.
I would most likely require support
from colleagues and other team
members in order to actually help
me meet people to expand my
network.
25/09/23 (End
of placement)
And carrying
forward into
everyday
practise
15
the future and we may need help
on it.
Learning about the company’s
challenges in the world:
Taking the time to understand the
wider impact my work and others
are having on the world my
company deals with externally and
what external circumstances will
have an impact on my company
whether that being in a certain
department or branch or
department as a whole.
Not knowing the key challenges of
what the company will face could
have an impact on my career
climbing up the ladder and
understanding the wider and bigger
issues we face, possibly making it
harder to deal with customers and
suppliers.
In order to carry out this goal I
would need to keep myself
occupied with relevant and up to
date news about my company and
those that we deal with and to keep
current with people and their
understandings of what is going on
in the world internally and
externally. Keeping up to date with
current affairs
25/09/23 (End
of placement)
And carrying
forward into
everyday
practise when I
return as a
graduate

  • 2. 1 1. My placement learning goals I have identified and agreed placement goals with my manager and Academic Placement Adviser (APA). These include the personal and business goals I plan to achieve from my placement and are related to the learning from my course. I will include a minimum of 1 goal in each section (knowledge, skill, graduate attribute and business). This will form the basis of my first placement keep-in-touch- review with my Academic Placement Adviser. 1.a. Personal Goals: This is what I want to develop professionally and personally from my placement. These goals are based around knowledge, skills and graduate Attributes. These are flexible and may change throughout my time on placement. I will record all goals and how I progress towards them in this portfolio. Where necessary I will include additional evidence to best demonstrate how I work towards achieving these goals or to show what I achieve. During my placement the areas of knowledge I want to develop/ improve are: Knowledge goals My reasons for wanting to develop / improve this are: I will know if I have achieved this goal when/by: This relates to course learning around/in/about: Achieved: Yes | No | Ongoing Getting a better understanding of software on different instruments, (IC,ICP,OMNIS,FTIR) So I can run analysis on my own for the weekly and daily samples. When I am able to run the samples on my own confidently and not ask for any support from any of my colleagues Instrument knowledge Analytical chemistry Yes/Ongoing Learning better ways to carry out procedures So when I return to University, I can use those skills in my final year lab projects to move it along quicker, in case I have to repeat anything I may have more time left over to re-run it. I can carry out procedures quicker than I used to when I first came to my placement. I will also know if I have achieved this when I have gone back to university and I carry on working in the same manner that I have been working at my placement. Project work Time management Confidence in my own abilities Yes/ Ongoing Making up solutions like Keller’s Etch, Titanium Etch and other solutions that require a mix of components. I want to know how to make up and remake standard solutions from the top of my head or at least be confident to do it when I read what it contains. I can make all the solutions confidently on my own without any help from my mentors. The ability to observe and repeat tasks Confidence in my own skills Yes During my placement the Graduate Attributes I will develop/ improve are: Attribute goals My reasons for wanting to develop / improve this are: I will know if I have achieved this goal when/by: This relates to course learning around/in/about: Achieved: Yes | No | Ongoing University Graduate Attribute: Confidence I want to be able to take a sample and run it on an instrument without having supervision there or having to go and get someone to ask if I am doing it right. On the other hand, if I do need anyone’s help, I want to be able to ask for it without feeling embarrassed or feeling like I’m not capable. I am able to take a sample either in my placement or back at university and go over to a machine, run it and then look at those results and know what they mean (understand them) or use them to get more results from another machine. Project work Future work in the industry or similar environment Yes University Graduate Attribute: Creativity To be able to “think outside of the box” for any problem-solving issues that have come up regarding the industry I’m working for. I can use resources found in ASTM, ISO or any other specification and be able to come up with a validated solution based off of those documents. • 4. 3 University Graduate Attribute: Resilience Not taking it too personal any mistakes and problems that come up within my work. Making sure I can let go any issues or mistakes I’ve made and learn from them for any future problems. I can look straight for the solution of the problems; I keep myself calm and only think about what I can do to solve this issue. I manage to keep those involved in the situation around me calm and collected, rather than jumping to any conclusions on how to solve the problem. Leading by my morals makes me more open to being honest with the people I am dealing with. I can deal with any person (new or old) with a problem or issue they have. They’ll be able to trust me with their issue as they’ll know how I am and where my morals lie. Team building and skills development when working in teams with any projects for work. Yes/Ongoing Course Graduate Attribute: Driven to Succeed Making sure I am consistently thinking about the next step and the next task I can “master”. When I can perform all the routine tasks inside and outside of the lab (shop floor) without much or any supervision. Also, when I am able to learn a task and perform it straight away from the previous knowledge that may be useful in other tasks I’ve done in the past. Independent work, continuously wanting to learn new skills on new machines will make it easier when I return to university or in the future to the workplace, to get a grasp on new techniques and skills when performing the work tasks. Yes/Ongoing Course Graduate Attribute: Curious Pushing myself to ask more questions on the topics that interest me and asking to see new things. Every bit of experience whether good or bad is good to have under my belt as it gives me more of an understanding of what I want to do when I leave university and where I would want to go. I’ve been asking my managers to show me new things that aren’t specifically to do with Chemistry. I’ve been getting involved with NDT, mechanical testing and metallurgy. I’ve even for a DILO event planned to go and spend a day in the design department Having a wide spread of options will help me to expand my point of view on analysis in the future. Having some understanding of NDT and the metallurgy side of things will change my view from being more biased to the chemistry end result/findings. Ongoing

Here are specific areas on which I will focus my time, effort and work. During my time on placement these may change and I will record any changes here as this demonstrates the many different areas I work in. This is not about success it's about getting as much experience as I can. Where necessary I will include additional evidence to best demonstrate how I work towards achieving these goals or to show what I achieve. During my placement I will support the needs/requirement/objectives/outcomes of my employer / business by: Employer / Business goals My reasons for wanting to develop / improve / support/ contribute to this are: I will know if I have achieved this goal when/by: This relates to course learning around/in/about: Achieved: Yes | No | Ongoing Learn how to perform the weekly analysis tasks from the team. Benefit to the company: I will be another employer capable of performing the weekly tasks and therefore can provide cover for any of them. I want to be able to confidently and independently carry out the analytical procedures done in the lab on a weekly basis so I will feel like I am contributing to the team as much as everyone else is when doing the weekly analysis. I have my co-workers leaving me alone to do the analysis and trusting the results I get. Also asking me to run certain analysis if they are too busy, showing me that they trust me enough to complete the required task. It relates to project work in the lab by making me more confident in my own abilities to perform tasks as safely and independently as I can, so when it comes to going back to the lab at university and doing a 6 weeks lab project, I can carry it out with ease. Ongoing Projects: 1) Standardisation of the chemicals 2) Overrun and recipe investigation 3) Rewrite of lab instruction Benefit to the company: These investigations will be left to the lab for their use along with my typed-up lab instructions for project 1. I want to have an impact on the department (and the company as a whole) in a positive way that will help out all of my colleagues and newcomers in the lab. If any of my work whether being independent or supported work is of any help then I’d consider it a successful task When my colleagues refer to my work or ask me about any certain topics I am working on. By my colleagues referring to my work or asking me about it I will know that my projects are contributing to the department like everyone else’s work. University projects and post project work like lab reports, procedures and reviews. I gave myself the task of making notes in these sessions and then typing them up in our own version of a “How to Guide”. I created this “How to Guide” in our google drive and shared it with everyone else so if they needed to perform a certain task and forgot how to do it then they could refer to that guide for help. Some of the sections in the “How to Guides” were difficult to write as I didn’t have the best understanding of both machines compared to everyone else’s understanding. Nevertheless, I did my own research to help my understanding and looked through other people’s notes as I may have missed anything that was said. I then managed to finish the How to Guide for the FTIR and IC. I feel it would have benefitted myself (especially writing the How to Guide) by not being embarrassed or afraid to ask the tutor who came in anything I didn’t quite understand. Yes Learning better ways to carry out procedures By observing different peoples’ ways of working when it comes to lab work and with the preparations of experiments or samples, I have been able to adapt my own style of working which I see beneficial to me and my time management. As a result I have managed to prep for Better ways to carry out procedures to me means either more efficient, beneficial and/or quicker. Get a better understanding of how chemistry works in the industry – more specifically how it ties in with building a wing of a plane. As we deal with a lot, if not all, the analysis of the wings, I wanted to understand more about the inner workings and how it is assembled to form a complete wing. Having projects that are heavily involved with the creation of the wing made it easier to try and understand but also showed great challenges as I felt I was lacking in the required knowledge unlike my co-workers. I gave myself an action to try really hard to focus on what people are saying and ask when I am lost and don’t understand what has been said or done. Thankfully, the people hear at Airbus are more than happy to show and tell their knowledge on what is going on to help me grasp an idea of what they’re saying. A big challenged I faced when trying to learn and engage more about the wing was to learn all the abbreviated phrases. It was quite heard to get my head around what all of them meant and what they are related to but my company had a handy website called lexinet where I could type in the abbreviation to find out what possible meanings it could have. After time the abbreviations became more natural to hear and say in my everyday vocabulary. Learn how to run and maintain the instruments in the lab ICP, IC, Titrator unit, FTIR When putting analysis onto the machines on a Monday morning sometimes it might not go as planned and we need to re run some analysis or check the machine for anything that may be causing the issue. A lot of the time it can be down to loose wires or cables stopping aspiration and dosing of samples or something just not entered correctly like a position number on a sample tray. It is our job then to find what the issue is and then fix it which can be anything from screwing the cable in properly or placing the sample into the correct position on the sample tray. Fixing the issue and getting better results on the next re run of the analysis A lot of the time an issue can arise on an instrument that you haven’t set off for the analysis yourself, which can either go for you or against you. You can either find the problem straight away or have to look harder. Having the confidence to take on work that I may not fully know how to carry out the process but by being able to speak up and ask any one of my colleagues I will be able to develop my knowledge and skill within that task Yes University Graduate Attribute: Creativity Working in an environment such as airbus, my creative mind was put to the test. I managed on several occasions to think outside of the box on project work I was either leading or supporting on. For example, on my project for the standardisation of the chemicals in the lab I was able to avoid having to buy a new titration electrode for a method and instead researching and coming up with a new primary standard that suits the titre being used and the electrode we currently have. I found it quite a challenge trying to figure out what the alternatives could be as I had gained some sort of tunnel vision on the project at hand and needed to break away from that trend to find a new way to solve the problem. Having these issues appear made it gradually easier to think outside of the box and since having said issues I have been able to ask from my colleagues’ things they liked and disliked about that certain situation and what I could do better next time To develop in this area, I believe I need to reject the tunnel vision ideology when dealing with a project and at each step think about what each outcome could be making sure I have back up options and different paths to go down. Along with writing the method and procedure I needed to find out which primary standards I needed to use and what the quantity I needed. From there I also needed to write and insert the equation to work out the volume, Moles and Molarity of each titre. I was able to contact the supplier’s technical team for support on anything I was really stuck on but mainly managed to complete the writing of everything by myself along with some support from people who were working on this project with me. specifically ones that we would already have in stock. Another benefit of this would be saving more time, since waiting for the chemicals took around 4 months due to a shortage and high demand for them. Contribute to the work in the lab (E.g., Investigations, routine lab jobs in chemistry and metallurgy) Starting off in the lab I had only ever learned theory on majority of the machines I have dealt with over the past 13 months, so it was quite daunting and, in some aspects, overwhelming as in some ways it felt as if I was expected to know exactly what each machine did and how it worked. I gave myself the task to take the time to learn how these machines worked to then be able to operate them with full confidence on my own and perform the weekly analysis along with project analysis if I was required to. Within the first 6 months of my placement, I was already feeling very confident operating on the machines as I had completed most if not all my task capture sheets the company wanted me to complete before carrying out tasks on my own. Now coming to the end of my placement I have full confidence in myself to carry out the required tasks we receive daily, weekly and monthly. A big challenge of mine was dealing with the very expensive and dangerous machines as I didn’t want to break them or hurt myself trying to operate them. Thankfully, I had no injuries and didn’t break any of the machines or any accessories Pushing myself that little bit more to be able to learn all the machines quicker so I can get stuck into any projects going on or any future projects that would be using any of those machines. • 12. 11 3. Summary of overall performance & achievements - feedforward and action planning This will form the basis of my final placement keep-in-touch- review with my employer(s) and Academic Placement Adviser (APA). In order to consolidate my learning and development I will outline the feedback I have received from my employer(s). I will reflect on what I have done while on placement and consider how this relates to and support the learning on my course. This reflection will then be used as a basis for the completion of relevant sections of my PSP3 e-portfolio. 3. a. Employer(s) Feedforward: This section is for my placement manager/mentor(s) to provide me with feedback on my overall performance and achievement of my goals. Where possible this should celebrate my successes and provide me with some specific areas of improvement to support future development towards graduation and beyond. This can be written by my placement manager/mentor(s) or I can input feedback gathered from my placement colleagues or through other means e.g., appraisal. I will then use these points in development of my Action Plan. During the first 6 months of Molly’s placement here in Broughton, I was her line manager, from the beginning of Molly’s placement she has shown great interest in the tasks within the Laboratory, despite joining the team to predominantly focus her internship on Chemistry and gain an understanding of the scope our Chemists endure here, she was very interested in expanding her knowledge and was keen to understand the role of our Metallurgists, with this in mind, Molly took on board a project to support her university asks as well as an extensive amount of learning and support to the team. Without doubt Molly integrated into the team immediately, she has always shown dedication to her role and support to the team and I feel the team have treated her like one of the team. I personally have been very impressed with Molly’s approach and dedication to her internship so far. I feel the areas of development for Molly, build confidence - I hope this has grown since January as you’ve become more comfortable with the role, but don’t hesitate to be involved in the topics outside of the lab (i.e., engage with operations more), speak up more - where you have an issue/request/concern/ success always look to speak up and be heard. Build networks - Airbus is a perfect place to build networks ensure you get the best out of your placement and get to know people outside of the Lab team (engage with the wider quality team). - Kassandra Carr – Previous HO of the Materials Laboratory I had the pleasure to work with Molly during her internship placement in the Materials Laboratory in Airbus Broughton. She was very organized and grasped our system very quickly. Despite Chemistry being her area of expertise, she managed her time well enough to engage with other areas of the Laboratory, non as familiar to her, such as material forensics and mechanical testing. Molly has shown good initiative and has been eager to learn and take new challenges, completing all tasks she has been given in a very professional manner. - Jonathan Aragon Escobosa - Laboratory Operational Specialist Name of Reviewer (Line Manager): Multiple reviews Role title: Various Roles

In the short period of time that I have been head of the team Molly has impressed with her communication style and particularly made a strong impression when presenting a summary of her time spent to the senior quality leadership team. Some of the items Molly has brought to the team will be kept in place for the future such as the Lab/NDT website, - Rob Houghton – HO Quality CDT ISS Molly has worked extremely hard during her internship with Airbus. She has shown interest in and undertaken investigations in a number of disciplines within the Materials Laboratory including chemistry, metallurgy and mechanical testing. Whilst undertaking investigations Molly has shown herself to be proactive and able to take the initiative - skills highly useful in the manufacturing environment. - Sally Jenkins – Laboratory Operational Specialist Molly has been a highly valued member of the Airbus Laboratory team. From the off Molly was keen to get involved in as many different projects and work streams in order to gain as much experience and knowledge from the team. During her team at Airbus, Molly has completed projects within Chemistry, Metallurgy and Mechanical Testing. Molly has also been involved in projects outside of the Laboratory department and has widened her network within the Airbus Broughton community including Women’s Day, Quality Day and STEM talks to primary and secondary schools. - Dina Campbell – Laboratory Operational Specialist
  • 14. 13 My placement evaluation: Given the skills, knowledge, attributes and workplace specific awareness I have learned and engaged with during my placement here is a summary of the key learning I have gained during my placement. I have reflected on key successes of my placement year, and also issues that have arisen, and how I have addressed these. Over the 13 months experience I have received at Airbus I have gained the key skills and knowledge needed to work in an industrial material laboratory. These skills include; Time management, practical organization when running experiments on multiple machines, People and Networking skills. Amongst reflection upon these skills, I believe I have been relatively successful in incorporating them in my day-to-day life here at Airbus and also using them in external environments such as social gatherings with work colleagues. Other successes I have encountered include my projects I carried out within my department setting up the Standardisation of the chemicals in the chemistry lab along with creating various how-to-guides and procedures for people on pieces of equipment we have or any software update we had installed. Along with the successes, there have been times issues have risen and I have had to deal with them in a professional manner and keep my composure as a mature, responsible adult. Fortunately, there wasn’t many issues that I had to deal with that caused me or anyone a problem but when they did occur, I simply dealt with it by taking myself out of the situation and removing myself from the room or setting to be able to clear my thoughts and come to a sensible conclusion on what I needed to do to resolve the issue.
  • 15. 14 4. My Employability Action Plan: To continue to improve my learning and support securing graduate level employment I will produce a clear and detailed Action plan based on my experiences during placement and the feedback received. Goal: What I need to work on to improve my graduate employability Actions required: The steps I need to take in order to achieve my career/academic ambitions Constraints: the challenges / limitations I could face Support: the people, organisations, resources, finance, time etc. needed Target date: I will look to achieve this by (date) Speaking up more: Where I have had an issue/request/concern/success, I need to always look to speak up and be heard. Take initiative in situations I believe I can excel at. Speaking my mind more openly to others about any ideas or concerns I have with any projects or any general tasks at hand I could face creating a hostile environment and negative feedback from people with different views and ideas which could possibly affect my future career at the company People within my department would be a big benefit to me as they will give me the courage to speak out more to people outside my department and share my thoughts and views. 25/09/23 (End of placement) And carrying forward into everyday practise Building Networks: I need to engage with the wider teams outside of my departments. Building those connections will benefit myself and others who I will work with if any issues may arise in Make sure I put myself out there ask people what they are involved with in the workplace, getting to know them and what they can offer me and what I can offer them People may get the impression that I am just getting to know them in order to just use them for work so I will have to make it known that that is not my intention. My main intention is getting to know people and helping them if I can. I would most likely require support from colleagues and other team members in order to actually help me meet people to expand my network. 25/09/23 (End of placement) And carrying forward into everyday practise
