2. • Sushma Swaraj was born on 14 February
1952 at Ambala cantonment to Shri
Hardev Sharma and Shrimati Laxmi Devi.
Her father was an eminent member of the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. She
completed her graduation in B.A with
Political Science and Sanskrit as major
subjects from the S.D. College of Ambala
Cantonment. She did a degree course in
LL.B. from the Department of Laws of the
Punjab University at Chandigarh. In 1970
she received the Best Student award from
S.D. College, Ambala Cantonment.

• She was excellent in extracurricular activities. Some of her
interests include classical music, poetry, fine arts and drama.
She is also a keen reader of poetry and literature. Sushma
Swaraj was declared the best cadet of N.C.C. of the S. D.
College for three consecutive years. A state-level competition
held by the Language Department of Haryana saw her
winning the best Hindi Speaker award for three consecutive
years. She also became the best speaker in Hindi of Punjab
University in the A. C. Bali Memorial declamation contest and
there she was awarded the university colour. She has won
several awards of distinction in rhetoric contests, debates,
recitations, dramas and other cultural activities. She was the
President of Hindi Sahitya Sammelan of the State of Haryana for
four years.
4. How did she enter politics?

Considered as the leader of the next generation, the
inception of Sushma Swaraj in Indian politics was as a
student leader in the year 1970. Many protests against
the government of Indira Gandhi were organized by
Sushma Swaraj. She is an exceptional speaker and
campaigner, who, after joining the Janata Party, got
actively involved in campaigning against the
Emergency. Her quest in Indian politics saw her as the
first woman Chief Minister of Delhi and later as the first
woman Leader of Opposition. She became the State
President of Janata Party in Haryana at an early age of
27 years.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj offered to extend the visa
of a British couple, who had a baby May, 2018 through surrogacy in
India and face the prospect of leaving her in an orphanage as they

9. Hard working and result oriented
• The term "results driven" is a great term. It speaks to a
person's ability to create momentum based on their
ultimate goal of getting things done She constantly looks
for areas of improvement. She realized that there is a
lack of data on Indian students studying abroad, so she
implemented a Students Registration module to track
these numbers. The Union government has introduced a
new registration module for Indian students who are
studying abroad in order to create a database. Minister
of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj tweeted informing
everyone about her new initiative.

10. Good communicator
Apart from maintaining an active online presence, Swaraj is
known for her diplomatic skills and follow through. She has
held round-table meetings with Indian heads of missions to
SAARC, ASEAN and Middle East after taking her position.
She speaks fluent Hindi and English and was unabashed as
the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. In 1999 she
competed against Sonia Gandhi from Bellary, and even
learned how to speak Kannada

• Throughout her work she manages to maintain a positive, and light-
hearted attitude which draws even more people to her.

were not allowed in the armed forces. Now they say I am overage.
• And when someone asked her to help with their refrigerator
problems, she wittily replied “Brother I cannot help you in matters
of a Refrigerator. I am very busy with human beings in distress.”

Even when she cannot help somebody, she acknowledges them and their
problems. When people thank her, she has said that she does not need
thanks, and that ‘ it is [her] duty towards our country and countrymen,’ as she
has tweeted.
After wrestler, Vinesh Phogat, suffered from a ligament tear prompting her to
drop out from the Rio Olympics quarter final wrestling match, Swaraj reached
out to her and offered her much needed words of comfort.
“Vinesh- you are our daughter. Ask for anything you require,” she said
