3. CHILDHOOD AND EARLY LIFE
Narendra Damodardas Modi was born on September 17, 1950 in the small town of Vadnagar ,
Gujarat.
He belongs to the backward Ghanchi community, he started selling tea at Vadnagar railway station
at a very young age, after which he set up a tea stall near a bus terminus with his brother.
After completing schooling in 1967, he travelled across India and visited Rishikesh , the Himalayas
, Ramakrishna Mission and Northeast India.

He returned to home and went to Ahmedabad to join RSS as a full time pracharak ( campaigner) in
1971.
Graduated from Delhi university in political science in 1978 and obtained Masters degree in
political science from Gujarat university in 1983.
5. POLITICAL CAREER…
During the 1975-77 national emergency imposed by then PM Indira Gandhi he went to
underground and travelled in Disguise by distributing pamphlets to oppose the government . This
brought his managerial organizational and leadership skills.
He joined BJP in 1985 and served as org secretary in Gujarat unit in 1987.
He contested Ahmedabad municipal corporation elections and gave his 1st ever to the BJP.

He also helped L.K.Advani’s ayodhya Rath Yatra in 1990, which became his national level political
assignment.
He played a major role in strengthening BJP’s presence in Gujarat after 1990 assembly elections.
In 1995 elections won by 121 seats in Gujarat and formed 1st ever win by BJP govt in Gujarat.
1995 – BJP’s national secretary to handle Haryana and HP activities.
1998 – General secretary to resolve internal disputes and helped BJP win in 1998 elections.

2002 – Gujarat assembly elections for 1st time and won a seat from Rajkot and became chief
minister of Gujarat.
On feb 27, 2002 – Gujarat riots occurred in a train on hindu pilgrims near Godhra.
He was forced to stepdown as CM by both IN and OUTSIDE party leaders and again he re-elected
as the CM in the same year 2002.
Special investigation team (SIT) was appointed by the supreme court to investigate the role of
modi and others in the violence and reported a 541 pages report in 2012 gave a clean chit to modi
and convicted 31 Muslims for the initial attack on the train.

He developed Gujarat in many sectors like agricultural growth rate , provided electricity to all
villages and also he succeeded in inviting foreign investments.
Later Modi played a very important role in BJP’s election campaign in 2014 elections.
He became a 15th prime minister of India .
After assuming office as PM , he initiated many programs as Swachch bharat , Make in India
,Clean Ganga , Digital India , and recent issues like Demonetisation to eradicate black money and
also inviting many countries to make investments in India.

In 2007 – he was named as the Best chief minister in the country , in as survey conducted by India
Today Magazine.
In 2009 – FDi magazine honoured him with Asian winner of the FDi Personality of the year award.
He featured on the cover page of march 2012 issue of TIME’s Asian edition.
He is listed as most influential people in the world by TIME magazine in 2014.
He was awarded as CNN-IBN Indian of the year.

Modi is first prime minister of India who was born in ‘Independent India’ , that is , after august 15 , 1947.
Modi is the 15th prime minister of India.
He is the first prime minister whose mother was alive when he took office.
He has literacy interests and writes poetry in Gujarati.
He is a religious Hindu and fasts all nine days during NAVRATRI every year even while he is travelling.
Modi was denied a visa to US in 2005 when he was CM of Gujarat. US govt did this because failure of not controlling
riots occurred in 2002.
He sleeps for only five hours a day or less.
