Sundarban: A Unique Wilderness of the World.
1.
2. The Sundarban is the largest single block of tidal
halophytic mangrove forest in the world. It was
declared a world heritage site in 1974 and a national
park in 1984.
3. Why is it named sundarban?
The name may have been derived from the Sundari trees that
are found in Sundarbans in large numbers. Alternatively, it
has been proposed that the name is a corruption of
Samudraban or Chandra-bandhe . But the generally accepted
view is the one associated with Sundari trees.
4. Location of sundarban
The Sundarban forest lies in the vast delta on
the Bay of Bengal formed by the super
confluence of the Padma,Brahmaputra and
Meghna rivers across Saiyan southern
Bangladesh.

8. nature
The Sundarbans mangroves ecoregion is the worlds largest mangrove
ecosystem. Mangroves are a transition from the marine to freshwater and
terrestrial systems.

Sundari,kewra,passur, dhundal kakra, gewa,amur, goran,garjan,
kholsi, bola, hental, nupa palm, tiger fern, horgoza etc.
10. Large and small tidal waterways providing opportunities
for cruising and boating. Among the huge number of
rivers Baleswar,Sela,Passur,Shibsa, Malancha,
Raimongal, and kobadak are very important for the
forest’s ecology.

The sundarbans provides a
unique ecosystem and a rich
wildlife habitant. Best

royal Bengal tiger.
It has spotted deer, wild-
boar,monkey,lizard,otter,
gigantic dolphin, saltwater

About 270 species of Birds are so far recorded. The great white egret,
lesser adjutant stork, white bellied sea eagle, kites, coots, jungle crows,
curlews, pintails, masked fin foot, kingfishers, drongos, bee-eaters,
woodpeckers paddy field pipit, red jungle fowl etc. are commonly found.
14. Economy
Sundarban is the single largest source of forest produce in the
country. About over 4 million people of the impact zone of the
forests either directly or indirectly are dependent on forest
products. Woodcutters, honey collectors, fisherman and mollusk
shell collectors survive their life in this way.
15. Environment
Natural phenomena such as subsidence and earthquakes
and stochastic events like cyclones and tidal surges affect
the costal system in many ways. Recovering so quickly
from sidr (2007) was a big challenge for sundarbans.
16. Maintenance and Saving
Following steps should be taken to save Sundarban:
Forest acts should be strictly followed.
People should not cause any harm to the restricted areas.
People should be made aware of the importance of the
resources of the Sundarbans.
The government to assure the protection of the Sundarbans
should provide manpower
17. Tourism
Sundarban is one of the ideal tourist destination, the place has several
tourist attraction such as wild animals, Flora, Fauna etc. If properly
developed , this could be a major source of foreign exchange for the
country.
18. Interested and tourism loving people can visit
sundarbans whenever they want with their cheap
savings. It will take 8000-16000 tk for having a tour to
sundarbans.
19. The sundarbans is a unique source of scientific and biological
interests and offers opportunities for tourism, outdoor recreation,
biological research and conservation education. We should start
preparing for the next opportunity so that the Sundarbans become a
hotspot for wildlife tourism on the world map.
