What is meant by indoor air quality?
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency,
indoor air is often more seriously polluted than outdoor
air. Given that many of us spend up to 90 per cent of
our time indoors or in vehicles this is significant. For
general health, well-being and safety reasons, human
beings require a comfortable indoor temperature with
air free from dust, irritants, pathogens, unpleasant
odours, mould and mildew and other contaminants.
 Hospitals and other healthcare facilities have particular needs,
even excluding those of staff and visitors and the impact of
outdoor or ambient air quality (AAQ), because patients are
vulnerable and diseases are prevalent. In fact, hospitals are
uniquely vulnerable and exposed to heightened risks of health,
fire and safety hazard. Hospitals and healthcare facilities in Eu-
rope may not be taking seriously enough the need to protect
people from outdoor and indoor air pollution as well as bio
particles and airborne infection.
IAQ is a significant issue in health care.
Airborne organisms common in the environment can pose
a serious threat to a patient who is immune-compromised.
A patient ill with a respiratory infection can spread danger-
ous microbes to other patients, staff, and visitors.

3. Scope of work
We shall be responsible for the re-
moval of visible surface contami-
nants and deposits from within the
HVAC system .
The HVAC system includes any in-
terior surface of the facility’s air dis-
tribution system.
This includes the entire HVAC sys-
tem from the points where the air
enters the system to the points
where the air is discharged from
the system..
The return air grilles, return air
ducts to the air handling unit
(AHU), the interior surfaces of the
AHU, mixing box, coil compart-
ment, condensate drain pans, hu-
midifiers and dehumidifiers, supply
air ducts, fans, fan housing, fan
blades, air wash systems, spray
eliminators, turning vanes, filters,
filter housings, reheat coils, supply
diffusers, exhaust and ventilation
components are all considered part
of the HVAC system.

 The primary role of a hospital is to provide medical treatment
and nursing care to patients.
 There are various healthcare facilities and departments, such as
inpatient wards, operating theatres, intensive care units (ICUs),
outpatient departments (OPDs), pharmacies, radiology depart-
ments, laboratories, etc.
 Each facility has its own functions, and the day-to-day running of
each can be very different from the other facilities.
 The three main groups of occupants of a hospital are patients,
healthcare workers, and visitors. Individual groups are different
in terms of their health status and susceptibility to airborne
chemicals and microbes.
 The diversity of facilities and occupants makes the complex hos-
pital environment unlike that of any other commercial and in-
dustrial buildings.
The control of indoor air quality (IAQ) plays an important role in the
prevention of infection in hospitals to protect both hospital staff and
patients, especially immunosuppressed and immunocompromised
patients, who are highly susceptible to the adverse effects of various
airborne chemicals and microbes.
 Poor hospital IAQ may cause outbreaks of sick hospital syndrome
(SHS), causing headaches, fatigue, eye and skin irritations, and
other symptoms.
 More seriously, improper control of hospital IAQ may cause hos-
pital-acquired (nosocomial) infections and occupational diseases.

Many factors affect indoor air quality (IAQ) in hospitals and
healthcare buildings
Hospitals and Healthcare buildings can emit HAPs . These pollutants
can contribute to health problems that may affect employees, pa-
tients, their families, and the community. including:
 Mercury can be used in thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, ther-
mostats, fluorescent lights, and other products found in hospi-
tals. At room temperature, mercury is a liquid and emits toxic
vapors, which can be inhaled into the lungs and absorbed into
the bloodstream. Mercury is very toxic to humans. It impacts the
kidneys, liver, respiratory system, and central nervous system.
 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) PVC is used in plastic products such as
bags, surgical tubing, other medical supplies, and construction
materials. PVC is a source of HAPs. Some hospitals incinerate
their waste onsite. Burning medical waste can produce dioxin, a
potent carcinogen and that interferes with normal reproduction
and development at low doses.

establish standards of excellence,
NADCA (National Air Duct Clean-

TB bacteria When an active TB patient coughs, sneezes, or
speaks, airborne TB droplets will be generated.
Legionella bac-
teria
 A common source of this bacterium in hospi-
tals is the water mist discharged from the
cooling towers and then drawn into the in-
door environment through the outdoor air
intake.
 Other probable sources include evaporative
condensers, potable water systems, and hot
water systems.
Staphylococcus
aureus
The bacteria are present on the skin and in the
nose, blood, and urine of an infected patient.
During some surgical procedures that require the
use of power tools, such as oscillating bone saws
and bone drills, microbial aerosols will be gener-
ated.
Aspergillus
spores
 Hospital renovation or nearby construction
work are major sources of aerosolized Asper-
gillus spores.
 The fungal spores from soil, plants, animals,
