This document outlines the 8 steps to produce a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) according to the ASME Section IX code. The steps are: 1) identify essential variables for the welding process, 2) add remaining essential variables from construction codes, 3) fill out the PQR format, 4) choose a qualified welder, 5) record welding parameters, 6) perform visual and mechanical tests, 7) record test results on the PQR, and 8) sign and date the completed PQR.

• Example : SMAW Process
To produce PQR according to ASME Section IX , there are some important
steps :
1- Look at all essential variables (factors) for your welding Process.
2- Add also non essential variables to PQR format after checking your
construction code like (ASME B31.3, B31.8 ,ASME Section VIII Div.1 ).
3- Put also non essential variables and start filling out PQR format. Add joint
design and company name ,etc.
4- Choose a qualified welder .
5- Let the welder starts the welding process, and record all variables like
(welding speed, heat input , I, V, …etc.)
6- After welding process done , check it visual if Ok.. Start mechanical tests
(Tension, Bending, Hardness if required).
7- After get the results and passed ,add all results to your PQR format.
8- Review it all again, if Ok.. Sign it with date and keep it to produce
required WPS that will be used during fabrication.

2- Add also remaining essential variables to PQR format after checking your
construction code like (ASME B31.3, B31.8 ,ASME Section VIII Div.1 ).
For example; ASME B31.3 for piping construction have some rules for
Preheating and PWHT should be add to PQR as ESSENTIAL .

this procedure.
Note : this is not to qualify a welder or to test
his ability.

6- After welding process done , check it visual(free of spatters, burn-

mechanical tests (Tension, Bending, Hardness if required).
How are we choosing type of test and number of tests?
We will see that in next slide >>

Mechanical tests
The tension test and bending tests shall be as per Section IX
QW 451.1 , It depend on thickness of test coupon welded.

step 6
Tension test
The required number of tension specimen are always two,
unless your coupon exceeds 1’’ ,then you are divide it onto
multiple pieces. (see QW 151.1 (C)and (D))

Tension test
QW 152 Tension Test Procedure
The tension test specimen shall be ruptured under tensile
load. The tensile strength shall be computed by dividing the
ultimate total load by the least cross sectional area of the
specimen as calculated from actual measurements made
before the load is applied.

Bending Test
The bending test shall be as per Section IX QW 451.1 , It
depend on thickness of test coupon welded.

The bending test shall be one of the
following:
Face bend, root bend, and side bend.

7- After get the results and passed ,add all results to your PQR format.
And attach your test result reports to your PQR.

All that is left is to fill out the bottom of the back of the PQR. This
will be easy, just a few housekeeping items to complete.
