Ashghal Hyder
Introduction
• The Fish Market Development plans are divided into two parts:
Ashghal’s part :
• Connecting the Fish Market wastewater to the public foul drainage
network.
• Developing the Stormwater drainage system for the Fish Market.
MMUP part :
• Renovation of the Wholesale area to improve the services of the Fish
market, the Buildings inside the Fish Market & Internal design of the foul
network system inside the Fish Market.
• Isolation of the high-salt source that comes along with the Sardine fish
from sultanate of Oman. Discharge of the salty wash water is not
acceptable to into the public foul sewerage network.
• Introduce Effective screening of Fish Market wastewater to 3 mm
aperture to ensure solids are captured prior to disposal into the new foul
collection line.
Introduction (Cont’d)
Purpose of the Project
Why ?
Purpose of the Project (Cont’d)
The commission will address only the works identified with Ashghal
Part.
Hyder is to develop Drainage Systems for the Fish Market
A. The Fish Market foul drainage system is not connected to the public
sewerage network.
B. There is no Stormwater Drainage System for the Fish Market
Objective
A. Current Foul System:
The current foul is system is collected into two main Septic Tanks ;
Septic Tank (1) which is located at the Main Entrance of the Fish
Market and Septic Tank (2) which is located at the back side of the Fish
Market.
Septic Tank (1) Septic Tank (2)
Objective (Cont’d)
• Current Disposal System:
• The wastewater from the septic tanks is collected by mean of tankers as
shown in the previous picture. These tankers make 5-6 daily trips from
each :
• Septic Tank (1): 6:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Septic Tank (2): 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.
• Total average Design Flow = 86 m3/day and the Total peak design Flow
is 516 m3/day.
• The Septic Tanks are in a very bad condition. (Leaking)
• Proposed Methodology:
• Hyder proposed a whole new foul collection system by means of a sewer
line and manholes connected to the existing pumping station (PS-CM).
The existing Septic Tanks will be demolished.
Objective (Cont’d)
Objective (Cont’d)
• Upgrade of the Existing Pump Station (PS-CM)
• Optimize the appropriate Treatment Technology in order to treat the
wastewater from the Fish Market Prior disposal to the nearest Manhole.
• The following high contaminant levels produced at the Fish Market:
• Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
• Total Nitrogen (TN)
• Phosphorous (P)
Objective (Cont’d)
Objective (Cont’d)
• To meet the standard target level for effluent treatment will require
physical (e.g. screens), biological (e.g. MBR, SBR or else) and chemical
treatment (e.g. Polymers, Hypochlorite, Powdered Activated Carbon
“PAC”…etc.).
• In regards to the level of treatment requirements shown in previous table,
the Biological treatment technology is probably the most efficient
treatment process that is capable to reach that high level of effluent
requirements to be safely disposed into the public foul sewerage system.
• Many parameters affect the selection of technical and economic
comparison of the different alternatives (DAF, SBR and MBR) of the
treatment systems. The relevant evaluation parameters in our case
include:
Objective (Cont’d)
• Operation Treatment Stages.
• Sludge Treatment. Treated Sewage Quality.
• Consumed Power. Maintenance.
• Land Requirement. Nitrogen Removal
• Phosphorous Removal
• Trusted Technology
• Construction Costs.
• The (DAF) plant is not efficient in reducing the Nitrogen (TKN) and the
Phosphorous (P) when compared to the CAS (Conventional Activated
Sludge) and therefore it is not recommended. The(MBR) gives slightly
higher effluent quality at a higher operating and maintenance cost than
the SBR which will be recommended.
Objective (Cont’d)
B. Stormwater Drainage System:
• Current Situation:
• There is no existing Stormwater drainage system at the Fish Market.
• Hyder is assessing the feasibility of constructing a non positive system
in the form of Soakaways or Soakaway trenches for stormwater
drainage. This will necessitate drilling boreholes and soak
away/infiltration tests by determining the groundwater level and the soil
permeability.
The End
Thank You
