4. Summary
The reading covers two books which is only a small portion of the entire
manuscript which is 10 books in length. The first book illustrates how the
Pilgrims were forced out of Holland. The trip was to be made in two ships,
but in the end only one was taken. This ship was the Mayflower. The
Pilgrims voyage is illustrated up to their arrival at Cape Cod in which was
inhabited by Native Americans who were seen as savages by the Pilgrims.
Book one ends the Pilgrims Plymouth as their home because of its harbor
and its waterways.
Book two covers the beginnings of life in Plymouth and the encounters
with Native Americans. These relationships improved when a Native by the
name of Samoset comes to the Pilgrims and is able to speak broken
English, who will later introduce Squanto. Three key points to come from
book two are the Mayflower Compact to ensure liberty among the
Pilgrims, the Compact with the Indians which brought tolerance and
allowed them to coexist, and the First Thanksgiving.
