Media Evaluation
1. Media Evaluation
Question 1:
In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
2. My media products(A Short Film, Radio Trailer and Film Poster) largely uses all
forms and conventions of what a professionally made short film would be; it
incorporates mostly what a short film should be and also how it should be. This is
because through the research I have been doing up until the production stage, I
have gained an understanding insight of the things to do in order for my film
production to fall under the codes and conventions of a short film. The
conventions I incorporated into my film were: my film having just two characters
in it, making it easier for the audience to understand and follow through the story
more easily. Also I only used one location which made it easier for the characters
and myself due to lack of budget, this meant transportation expenses wasn’t
needed.
Whilst writing up my ideas for my media products, I made a decision to include
things that would appear in other professional media products. These things
include: using a variety of camera angles, for example ‘ Close up on the female
character’s face when she remembers her good times as the voice over plays, I
used this to show the character’s emotions, this is so he audiences can relate to it if
it affects them, and also so the audience could sympathies with her, using grey
scale effect in the parts where the female character is remembering, this shows
her days have no color in them, whilst the things she’s actually remembering are in
color this represents the times she was happy and her days were full of happiness,
joy and love.
Camera work
Whilst filming I used a Canon PowerShot SX500 IS Digital Camera, the camera
was brilliant, it was in HD which allowed my film to come out in a very good
quality. It took me a while to get used to it, but i eventually got the hang of it.
Whilst using the camera i didn’t use a tripod but i kept a steady hand which
allowed the camera angles to be more precise and not shaky.
I think I have developed conventions of the film, this is because I went outside my
comfort zone of using quiet basic camera angles, I decided to use some P.O.V
(Point Of View) shots for when the female character is looking at herself in the
mirror and also when the male character walks through the door and finds her
sleeping on the couch. This camera angel is mostly used in films to show the
character’s point of view and how they see things in their perspective, I think I
have effectively used this camera shot, this is because I think it fits in well with the
concept of the film because there is a shot of both characters allowing the audience
to see what they can see.
3. Lighting
Whilst filming, the lights used were all natural, the day the film was shot was quite
a sunny day, and this helped create a more realistic effect, for the audiences
watching. But there was a scene in the film that needed more light, but due to the
fact i didn’t have any lights on set, i had to leave it like that and from the feedback i
have gotten the audiences didn’t seem to mind
All through my film production, i used natural lighting; i didn’t have to use any
artificial lighting to bring out any scenes, this was because it was a sunny day when
we were filming, so the house was quite bright due to the sunlight.
Costumes
For the character’s costumes, I made it very contemporary; this is to show the
realism of the whole idea of Domestic Violence in relationships. It shows the
audience that even if you dress fancy or not, a person can still be a victim of
domestic violence behind closed doors. The character’s dressing in modern
clothing also shows the film has only been recently made, which gives the audience
an understanding that the issue is still ongoing. I presented the modern costumes
through the male character by him wearing jeans and his timberland boots, this
was to show his superiority over the female character, who was shown to be
wearing normal casual indoor clothing, but towards the end of the film she is
shown to have a feel of confidence with the way she puts on her leather jacket and
4. also when she’s stuffing her clothes in the bag. I decided on use a leather jacket as
part of the costume because it’s what’s trending these days.
