ENGLISH LANGUAGE HOLIDAY HOMEWORK – Class VII 2020-21
1. Read any of the following books and then do the assignments in the table for any one of them.
The assignment can be typed or handwritten on lined or A4 paper.
A. The Village by the Sea by Anita Desai
B. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
C. The Secret Garden by Francis H Burnett
D. Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift
E. Being Miss Nobody by Tamsin Winter
F. They do it with Mirrors by Agatha Christie
G. Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
H. Wonder by R. J. Palacio
 Make a new book jacket for the book.
Front cover: Draw and colour an illustration for the book.
Inside front flap: Write descriptions of the main characters.
Inside back flap: Write a description of the setting and a short summary of the book.
Back cover: Write 5-10 quotes from the book that are important to understanding the story.
 Write out an interview between you and a character.
Write 10 questions to ask your character. Then, answer each question as you think the character
would respond.
 Create an illustrated timeline showing important events from the book.
Choose at least 10 important events from the story. Write a description of each event, and draw &
colour an illustration for each event.
The events must be in the order in which they occurred.
 Write a letter:
Write a friendly to the main character of your book asking questions, making a complaint or a
suggestion, or writing your opinion about something that happened in the story. Include all elements
of a friendly letter (date, greeting, body, closing, & signature). Integrate any hadith into your letter
to support your point.
2. Read a magazine article from the Intellect School Magazine and extract 10 to 15 important points
from it. Then compose a summary.

1. As you know, there are some important literary devices that you have learned in Literature. These
are listed below (in addition to a few new ones). Write the definition of each and give two examples
per device. Compile on A4 or lined paper neatly and remember to write your name and section.

Effective communication is a means of encouraging creative and critical thinking. Amongst the many essential
21st
century skills, the art of delivering thoughts across in a persuasive and coherent manner is one of the most
important ones. Declamation competitions give students the platform to hone in on this very skill.
We are pleased to announce that The Intellect School (Senior Girls Section) will be holding an English Inter-class
Declamation Competition for students who will be promoted to Classes VII and VIII. Interested students are
required to prepare their declamations by the second week of July and present it to their Language teachers.
Three students from each class shall be shortlisted for the final event that shall be held in August.

Rules of the Inter-class Declamation Competition
1. The speech must be age appropriate and original; plagiarism will lead to disqualification.
2. Paper reading is not be allowed. Carrying cues can lead to penalization or disqualification.
3. Each speech will be judged on the following criteria: Content (task fulfillment), Clarity (style and clarity of
delivery), Intonation, Confidence (In speaking and body language), and Impact.
4. Speeches must be of 3 minutes at most. The first bell will ring at the 2.5 minute mark and after 30 seconds,
the second bell will ring indicating the end of the time limit.
5. Obscene language will lead to immediate disqualification, as will the discrimination against any race,
religion, caste or group. Humourous speeches should not have insults or demean anyone or anything. It
should be done tastefully with wit.
6. Props to demonstrate a viewpoint at any point during a speech is strictly prohibited.
7. The decision of the judges will be final.
8. First, second and third positions will be given in accordance to the judgement. Certificates of participation
shall be handed out to all the participants.

Interested students are required to prepare their declamations by the second week of July and present it to their Language teachers. The speech must be age appropriate and original; plagiarism will lead to disqualification. 2. Paper reading is not be allowed. Carrying cues can lead to penalization or disqualification. 3. Each speech will be judged on the following criteria: Content (task fulfillment), Clarity (style and clarity of delivery), Intonation, Confidence (In speaking and body language), and Impact. 4. Speeches must be of 3 minutes at most. The first bell will ring at the 2.5 minute mark and after 30 seconds, the second bell will ring indicating the end of the time limit. 5. Obscene language will lead to immediate disqualification, as will the discrimination against any race, religion, caste or group. Humourous speeches should not have insults or demean anyone or anything. It should be done tastefully with wit. 6. Props to demonstrate a viewpoint at any point during a speech is strictly prohibited. 7. The decision of the judges will be final. 8. First, second and third positions will be given in accordance to the judgement. Certificates of participation shall be handed out to all the participants.
