3. INTRODUCING MYSELF
Greetings to everyone, my name is Mpho Lets’oara, a third year student at Lesotho
College of Education. I am going to talk about Literature in English and its
challenges.
4. Introduction
The study of literature is very interesting and helpful to learners for many reasons.
It involves the reading and analysis of written materials of different kinds including
fiction, non-fiction written works in English
5. What is Literature?
It is an expression of ideas, thoughts, and experiences from societal behaviour
which can even influence other societies.
It is defined as a pieces of writing that are valued as works of art, especially novels,
plays and poems.
Hancock (2006) believes that literature is a body of written works: the body of
written work of a culture, language, people or period of time.
6. Importance of literature
by: Shimmer Chinodya, (1992:36)
Literature improves one’s command of language.
It teachers one about the life, culture and experiences of people in other parts of
the world.
It gives one information about other parts of the world which they may never be
able to visit in their lives.
It entertains people and provides useful occupation in one’s free time.
It makes one wiser and more experienced by forcing them to judge, sympathize
with, or criticize the characters they read about.
It helps them compare their own experiences and those of other people.
It also gives information which may be useful in other subjects, for example, in
Science, History and others.
8. Elements of the story/ fiction
by: New Mexico( 2022)
elements are character, plot, setting, theme, point of view, conflict, and tone. All
seven elements work together to create a coherent story.
For example, a character is a person that have the greatest effect on the plot or
the most affected by the events of the story.

11. Problems facing literature
Lack of books.
No theatre.
Teachers do not understand text.
Students that do not speak English.
Attitude that people have towards literature.
Lack of support.
Lack of motivation.
12. solutions
Teachers workshops.
Change of curriculum.
Debate and English fairs.
Government should supply schools with literature books.
Schools should have effective libraries.
14. Recommendations
Teachers should take into account the accessibility of literary texts they are going to employ in their language classrooms.
Teachers should see literature as a resource for the attainment of the ultimate objectives and not as an end in itself.
It would be desirable if language creativity could be practiced and fostered in literature-base language classroom, because it
is important both in first language and second language.
Teachers should provide scaffolder assistance with literature text books
There must be reinforcement in literature at school, government should always re-visit the policy in order to base schools in
standard education like other countries.
Not only making follow ups but, also investigate how other countries develop their education.
