3. *
*Getting started:
*Gaining valuable work experience
*Resume building and career goals
*Discovering strengths & weaknesses
*This means identifying what I enjoy doing but also
how to please an employer
*Separate likes & dislikes from strengths &
weaknesses
* Work is rarely a walk in the park
As a young employee adjusting to a new workplace, I’m learning a lot
about career-planning and career-goals.
4. *
*What is a goal?
*Examples in school; sports; at home
*Analyze
*How is this job different from or similar to any of
the positions you may have held before?
*Skill sets, expectations of/from employer,
realizations about the workplace
I’m sure you’ve been asked this before, but what are you truly trying to
gain from this experience? (other than a paycheck)
5. *
*What are your strongest skills?
*Hardworking & efficient? powerful people skills?
*Identify and cultivate
*Career; educational goals
*Higher education, improve your skills further
*What are you qualified for, and how can you move
closer towards success?
*Create action steps
*What are some ways that you can prove yourself to
your employer? How can your personal goals be
attained?
Once you identify your own strengths and weaknesses, you can begin to
cultivate a personal workplace identity that will continue to develop
across your professional experiences.
6. *
* Gaining more responsibilities
* Demonstrate competence and dependability
* Communicating with your employer
* Challenges encountered:
* Tasks, deadlines, proficiencies
* Clarify expectations
* Are there things you can do better? Stop/continue doing?
* Take initiative
* Notice a disorganized stock room? Your supervisor may
overlook something because they don’t have time
* Having trouble identifying an improvement? Ask your
supervisor! They will appreciate your interest and
commitment
* Ask for feedback
Professional goals must be aggressive AND realistic; pinpoint and
establish a practical timeline, as well as ways to handle new
objectives. Gaining economically valuable and difficult skills are
important for success.
7. *
*Keep your goals in mind, and your mind on-
task.
*Think of yourself in the long-term, where do
you hope you will be in the future?
*Career expectations– how will you achieve these
long-term goals by setting tasks and deadlines
now?
*Keep in mind your professional portfolio– how
you can add to it, and how you can market
yourself
I know your professional future may be the furthest thing from your mind, but
take it from me that “real life” hits you hard and fast; make sure you’re
prepared, or at least have the slightest idea of a game-plan for your future.
This is a great opportunity– take advantage of it.
