Last Semester in my Developing Multimedia Publications course, I was tasked with navigating InDesign to graphically design and write a character profile of my friend. Here is how it turned out.

James Diep, although he
describes himself as boring
and lazy, he could more accurate-
ly be described as a resilient but
easy going, passionate but humble
individual. His multifaceted per-
sonality is reflected in the way his
passions for editing, videogames
and travelling, particularly in his
journey for his future career, unite
to truly make James unique.
From the USA to Singapore
and New Zealand to China James’
passion for travel knows no bounds.
When he talked about where he
had been his face illuminated with
future plans of travel.
“I love travelling because it
gives me an opportunity to ex-
perience new cultures and learn
about history” he said.
It is obvious from the way that
James described his past travels
that is the people, the picturesque
landscapes and the history that
draws James into travelling as a
hobby.
Often it is the draining plane
trips, the exhaustion from lug-
ging around suitcases and the
long distances from the famil-
iarity of home that deter many
people from international travel.
2. However, these elements are
only minor obstacles for James
to conquer to reveal a bigger pic-
ture. It is here that his curiosity
and excitement about the world
around him is sparked.
“I really want to visit Praque
because I am keen to see the
gothic churches and learn about
the the history there. And since
i like astromony I would like to
see the medieval astronomy
clock” he said.
With a growing list of exciting
destinations to potentially vis-
it such as the Czech Republic,
England, Norway and Turkey
only fuels his passion for am-
ateur film blogging and editing.
On his trip to Canada,
James filmed his experiences
then afterwards compiled and
edited the footage into a video
montage. He hopes to contin-
ue doing projects like this as
it intertwines his interests of
travelling and editing but also
reminds him of exciting times.
“I think my passion for ed-
iting developed when I did my
diploma and has grown since
starting my degree” he said.
His diploma in screen and
media and current pursuit of a
Communication degree major-
ing in media production is
testimonial to his interest in
editing and film-making.
James previously entered
into a Bachelor of Science de-
gree but found that his talent
and burning passion for edit-
ing was at the heart of his future
career goals, hence the degree switch.
“It just wasnt for me, even
though I love astromony and
other parts of science. It was a
big change but one I am happy I
made”, he said.
While watching a film for a typical
person is passively entertaining
this pastime opens a door to cre-
ativity for James.
As an example, in his spare
time James edited ‘Titanic’ to
only include the footage of the
boat sinking and removing the
narrative scenes to showcase

“I really hope that
I can combine my
interests with my
career one day”
James playing a classic videogame- Super Smash Bros
the biographical story rather
than the fictional storyline.
“I like dissecting films and
putting them back together in my
own way” he said.
The editing process, while
often taken for granted, James
sees an opportunity for express-
ing himself and a path for his
future career in
videogame edit-
ing. It is evident
from his careful-
ly chosen words
and observant
manner that his
appreciation for
the methodical
process of editing transpires in
his personality.
Another ingredient in the
make-up of James is his vid-
eogame enthusiasm. Whether
its first-person shooter games,
multiplayer online battle arena
games to role-playing games,
it is obvious that the immer-
sion into a new and exciting
world, again, drives his passion.
“I really love exploring virtu-
al worlds and problem solving in
games. This is why I want to one
day make the videos that are part
of the games storyline” he said.
James has been playing vid-
eogames for a large part of his
life, and as games and consoles
evolve so does his love for games.
He enthused about old-
er consoles with reminiscent
smiles but today prefers to play
mainly PC online games with his
favourite game being the phe-
nomenon ‘League of Legends’.
“I get abit sentimental
thinking about playing on old
Playstations and my old Nintendo
64. They were the best!” he said.
It is here that James hopes to con-
nect his passions with dreams of mov-

ing to America and working for a Vide-
ogame company producing and editing
videogame trailers and
narratives. He said that this
niche career path would
be the opportunity for
intertwining all his passions
and therefore would enable
him to lead his best life.
