On June 28, 1098, Bohemond, the leader of the Christian army of the First Crusade, decided to attack Emir Kerbogha of Mosul's larger army that was besieging Antioch. Kerbogha had around 75,000 men compared to the Crusaders' smaller force. However, at the critical moment the emirs abandoned Kerbogha, surprising him. Instead of the weak army Kerbogha expected, he found a large, unified Christian force that defeated his divided troops, forcing him to retreat back to Mosul as a broken man and allowing the Crusaders to capture Antioch.
