• Project Veer Gatha was
instituted under Gallantry Awards
Portal(GAP) in 2021 with the aim
disseminate the details of acts of
bravery of the Gallantry Awardees
and the life-stories of these brave
hearts among the students to raise
the spirit of patriotism and instill
amongst them values of civic
consciousness.

dream and wanted me to
serve our nation by being
brave and patriotic like
Sandeep Unnikrishnan .
• Rani Lekshmi Bai also known
as Rani of Jhansi was a pivotal
figure in the Indian revolt
1857.
• She was one of the first
women freedom fighters of
India
4. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
He led the command
operation launched on 27
November 2008toflush
out terrorists from Hotel
Taj, Mumbai. Despite his
injuries ,he continued
fighting the terrorists till
his last breath. The brave
officer rescued 14
hostages.
5. • He was born in a Malayali family from Kozhikode, Kerala to K.Unnikrishnan (Retired
ISRO Officer) and Dhanalakshmi Unnikrishnan.
• Later the family moved to Banglore. He was interested in joining Indian army since his
school days
• Finished schooling at the Frank Anthony Public School.
• Joined National Defence Academy in 1995.
• Graduated as Lieutenant.
• Was commissioned in seventh Battalion of Bihar Regiment on 12 June 1999.
• Was part of Kargil war 1999.
• Promoted to Rank of Captain on 12 June 2003 and to Major in 12 June 2005
6. • In 2006 ,he joined National
Security Guards and after training
he became part of Special Action
Group.
• On completion he
earned Instructor grade .
• He was asked to report for duty
on 27 November 2008.
• In Mumbai, when 100 years old
Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was
attacked.
• Sandeep led a team of NSG
Commandos and rescued 14
officers.

9. • Following his death, a 4.5km
stretch of road between
Doddabalappur Road and M S
Palya junction was renamed as
Major Sandeep Unnikrishan Road.
• A bust of Major Sandeep
Unnikrishnan was installed on
Ramamurthy Nagar outer Ring
Road Jn in Bengaluru on Nov 2012
• Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
memorial is situated at
Vidyavanyapura in Banglore.
10. • The brave heart who lost his
life during 26/11 Attacks was
conferred with gallantry award for
selflessly saving the nation on 16
January 2009.
• Sandeep's mother received
Ashoka Chakra from President of
India, Pratibha Patil.
