National Educational Technology Standards for
Students (NETS-S)
• The National Educational Technology Standards for Students are distributed into six
categories.
• Creativity & Innovation
• Communication & Collaboration
• Research & Information Fluency
• Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, & Decision Making
• Digital Citizenship
• Technology Operations & Concepts
National Educational Technology Standards for
Teachers (NETS-T)
• The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers are distributed
into five categories.
• Facilitate & Inspire Student Learning & Creativity
• Design & Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences & Assessments
• Model Digital Age Work and Learning
• Promote & Model Digital Citizenship & Responsibility
• Engage in Professional Growth & Leadership
Importance of the Standards for Teaching &
Learning
• The NETS Standards hold a high importance for teaching & learning because
they provide a foundation for technology use & knowledge
• In teaching, the NETS embolden teachers to communicate with each other for
improved ideas on engaging students
• The NETS are vital for students in that they show them how to be accessible
to a new way of learning.
Approaches on how to Effectively Implement
NETS
• Districts, schools, and educators must be certain that classrooms have enough
technology available for students.
• Educators must research and experiment with technology in order to properly
use it and teach students.
• In order to effectively implement standards educators must have a concise
plan in place for lessons & activities.
Examples of Current Emerging Technologies
• Augmented Reality – Not to be confused with (VR) Virtual Reality, AR gives a
visual simulation which engages students by transforming the object or place being
examined. It is even able to transform the classroom itself.
• Artificial Intelligence – AI provides the option to transform the process of learning
and assign tasks that take valuable time which in turn leaves more time for advanced
learning.
• Cybersecurity & Data Privacy – As technology becomes further enhanced and
integrated classrooms the risks of cybersecurity increase. Data breaches, student &
staff information, test scores are all at risk factors.
Best Practices in Planning & Preparing Digital
Resources for in-class use
• Educators must have a clear goal or plan in mind for the end result of their use of
technology.
• Knowledge of digital resources is a must in order to effectively model and teach to
students.
• Be prepared for possible technical glitches. As with anything that is man made,
technology can fall victim to various difficulties.
• Do not fear technology. Educators must not be afraid to experiment with and do new
things with the technology at their disposal.
Ideas & Suggestions on the Cross-Curricular
use of Technology
• Using technology in the classroom can make the work of the educator easier
while providing up to date and accurate data.
• Students can use technology to submit assignments and communicate
digitally with the teacher.
• Students can complete projects such as science by using technology and then
typing an analysis of their findings.
Ideas & Suggestions on the Cross-Curricular
use of Technology Cont.
• Students can use technology such as Bee-Bots to navigate a maze and solve
math problems or practice literacy.
• Using QR or Quick Response codes to learn about topics such as Women’s
History or African American History.
• Using tablets and applications such as Osmo to practice shape recognition and
create tangrams.
Legal & Ethical Guidelines when Implementing
Technology
• Copyright : A legal right that grants the creator of an original work exclusive
rights for its use and distribution.
• Plagiarism: Copying the work of others without giving proper credit to its
creator. Using proper quotes and citations in academic works is always
encouraged.
• Fair Use: Any reproduction of copyrighted material done for a limited reason.
Such use is allowed without permission from the copyright owner.
Legal & Ethical Guidelines when Implementing
Technology Cont.
• Before using technology in the classroom educators must go over technology
safety with students.
• Model safe online practices with students:
• Checking to make sure sites are secure before entering personal information.
• Model how to use sites such as social media & how to create & publish
valuable content.
What is the role of a technology change leader in
developing a learning environment that promotes
digital citizenship?
• Developing a classroom environment that is preventative.
• Clearly defining policies which promote integrity.
• Use of appropriate digital etiquette.
• For any activities requiring students to use mobile devices a statement must be prepared
regarding its appropriate use.
What is the role of a technology change leader in
developing a learning environment that promotes
digital citizenship? Cont.
• Being a good role model
• Being a good role model demonstrates to the students that the teacher is dedicated to
promoting and upholding academic standards, (Robb & Shellenbarger, 2015, p. 6).
• Increasing student awareness
• Conduct activities with students to practice skills such as how to properly cite resources.
Examples on how to properly model ethical,
legal, & safe use of technology
• Taking care of technology equipment
• Teaching students how to care for technology resources by making them aware of malware such as
viruses & bugs.
• Helping to prevent cyberbullying
• Explain importance of if students see cyberbullying to report it immediately
• Show how creating and maintaining self image is important
• Promote a positive image of self online, (Promoting Responsible and Ethical, 2012, p. 9)
• Copyright Law & Fair Use Act
• It is vital for teachers & students to understand the use of material that has been copyrighted.
