As I learned more about the history of Redlining and its effects on my hometown I became very motivated to create this PowerPoint. Through this, I discovered the deep-rooted effects of Redlining on my area and how it has caused segregation. I hope this Powerpoint enables you to learn something new and provokes you to develop a new perspective on the topic of segregation in the United States!

● Long Island is located on the easternmost part
of New York state.
● It is a wapping 120 miles long and is about 23
miles wide.
● The Island is comprised of 4 counties in total:
○ Kings County
○ Queens
○ Nassau County
○ Suffolk County
● While the Western half of Long Island is urban
and sprawling suburban the Eastern half is
mostly rural.

Why is Long Island so segregated?:
HOLC was created to slow
down the increase of
foreclosures.
The start of redlining in the United
States - signed by FDR, creating the
FHA with the purpose of improving
housing conditions.
Law implemented by FDR with the
purpose of improving living
conditions for low-income families.

Long Island remains highly segregated
with an dissimilarity index of .69 out of 1.
Implemented by President Lyndon
B. Johnson prohibiting discrimination
concerning the sale, rental, and
financing of housing based on race.
Mass housing was built to
accommodate returning soldiers from
WW2. The town was made exclusively
for whites.

Of the 294 communities on LI, most of its
black residents live in only 11.
Public Schools on Long Island are 4 times more
segregated than they were forty years ago.
According to the 2017 Census 75% of Levittown’s
population is white.

I was born and raised in Nassau County.
I personally saw segregation in the schools I attended.
I currently attend school 3 minutes away from
the border of Garden City and Hempstead.
Segregation in my hometown has impacted me
significantly.
