The document discusses several artworks by different artists that struck Maya Moore in different ways. A photo of Laurie Anderson playing violin made Moore feel melancholy. In response, Moore created a photo lifting up a violin to feel uplifted. A photo by LaToya Ruby Frazier of everyday items on a dresser resonated with Moore because it looked similar to her own room. The description of a staircase photo by Laurie Simmons, which brought a feeling of peace from chaos, inspired Moore to depict a light she stared at while feeling calm during a chaotic moving experience.
2. "Walking Solo for Tape Bow Violin," 1979
by Laurie Anderson
• This photo of Laurie Anderson immediately struck me because of the lighting
and the use of black and white making this photograph immediately seem
very intense
• I also reacted to this photo because I am a violin player so I wanted to see
myself in the photo, however this photo for some reason made me feel kind
of melancholy
3. Maya Moore
• Because the previous photo gave me sad feelings about the
violin, I decided to do a response that was the opposite
• I have mainly only warm colors used and the violin is being
lifted up, because the violin makes me feel uplifted, but maybe
the person in the photo plays violin when they are sad and
need to be uplifted
4. by LaToya Ruby Frazier
• While browsing Frazier’s work, this photo initially gave me the strong
response
• Something that continues to inspire me is the normalcy in something
• From the baby photos, to the hair brush and come, to the olive oil spray in
the background, these are all things that are recognizable to me
• I noticed this theme in the photo set, including a picture of a stove top which I
also had a strong reaction to
5. Maya Moore
• When I first saw Frazier’s photo, in my head I thought “My room looks the
same way!”
• So I decided to approach my response, as “I see what your dresser looks
like, so I have learned a little about you. Here is what mine looks like, and you
can learn about me.”
6. Staircase by Laurie Simmons, 5 1/4 x 8 Inches
• I thought this was interesting at first because I was not quite sure what it
meant
• After reading the background story of this photograph, I immediately loved it
• Simmons talks about how when she usually creates something to
photograph her studio just becomes a giant mess but when this staircase
came about there was just a sudden piece and freedom from chaos, and I
thought that was such a beautiful way to describe something
Maya Moore
7. • Simmons description of how she created that piece inspired me to think of a
time where I felt surrounded by chaos but then experienced an overwhelming
feeling of calm
• I thought of the time I was moving into a new place and how everything was
just thrown around my room and crazy, but then I just laid down and stared at
the ceiling and felt relaxed
• So, this is a picture of the light that I just ended up looking up at for a long
period of time, where I felt free from the chaos of moving, even though it was
only for a short period of time
