2. In our last assignment reflecting on the UN goals, I
chose to focus on poverty. With this Slideshare, I’d
like to address the other component of that goal,
hunger.
Nutrition has always been a core aspect of my family
identity, and having access to good food is critical to
ensuring that people are able to thrive and succeed.
Hunger is an issue that I consider to be broken up
into two camps:
• Lack of access to food
• Poor nutrition from meager food
3. How you can help fight hunger locally
Soup Kitchen or other meal
services
Soup kitchens offer warm meals to
sufferers of homelessness and severe
poverty.
The best way to support a soup
kitchen is to volunteer.
Donating funds also helps.
Food Banks and needy family
programs
Food banks provide supplementary
food staples to low-income families
and other people in need.
The best way to support a food bank
is to donate funds.
Donating food also helps, but
perishables are not recommended.
4. While volunteering is a great way to give back to the
community, it’s not the most impactful thing one can
do. Donating funds and non-perishable foods enables
soup kitchens and food banks to continue operating
towards their goal of alleviating hunger.
• Avoid donating perishable foods like fresh produce, as unused portions will need
to be disposed of.
• Certain restaurants and food services like Panera Bread donate unsold product
daily, usually items like bread, which would otherwise be thrown away or go stale.
5. The best use of social media with regards to a hunger relief
effort on a local scale would likely be to promote a local
organization, for instance an Instagram account with a large
follower base directing attention towards a local food bank,
or an online promotional effort to drive volunteer numbers
at a soup kitchen.
