Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast hope to achieve fame by successfully splicing together the DNA of different animals to create new hybrid animals for medical use. The title sequence for the film Splice uses visuals of x-rays and veins to represent the genetic engineering themes. It transports the viewer through a body represented in shades of green. Text for the production companies and actors is presented using genetics and DNA representations. Overall the sequence effectively links to the film's plot but is quite long at over 3 minutes.
2. Splice Plot
I thought it was best to find out what the film was about before
analysing its title sequence as there may be links between the
sequence and the film.
Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast hope to achieve fame by
successfully splicing together the DNA of different animals to create
new hybrid animals for medical use.
3. • The start of this title sequence is opened with the introduction of the
production companies. This bit starts with x-rays of animals, linking to the
film as from the plot we have learnt scientists are wanting to genetically
modify animals. These x-rays then transform into the name of one of the
production companies, this is creative as it is introducing the film as well as
the companies.
• The use of sound in this part of the opening is electrical sparks to signify
the x-ray board.
4. • When the title sequence begins we see the production companies are
introduced again, however this time Warner Bros. Pictures have been
enhanced as it is a basic black background with white font compared to the
rest which have a ‘inner body’ background. Warner Bros. therefore have
been the main company, and this allows them to have recognition and
they’re also the most recognisable company out of companies.
5. • The companies and actors are represented differently. The companies are
presented on in basic white font, whereas the actors names are made out of
DNA and genetics, linking to the film plot.
• The main thing I like is that the sequence is set as if the audience is travelling
inside of a body, however everything is in different shades of green and not red
which is what the audience is used to seeing giving it an eerie feel.
• The sound behind this is a slow piano piece creating a tense atmosphere,
every now and then we hear liquid moving enhancing the effect of moving the
through a body.
6. • Personally this is one of my favourite as it made up of veins. This is because the
look of deep green and purple veins against pale skin is a disturbing/sickly image.
Making the audience feel uncomfortable, preparing them for the film.
7. • First we see green looking skin which starts to move as if a heart is beating
underneath, the veins gradually get thicker with each beat and spells out the
name of the film. As you can see they have chosen to use the deep vein on
skin again which I previously pointed out as being gruesome. The name
slowly fades away to a dark green screen, marking the start of the film.
8. Overall
• Overall I feel this is an effective opening to the film as there are a lot of links
to the film itself in a creative way. However, I would say a downside is the
length of the opening at 3 minutes 29 seconds, this is because after a while I
started to loose interest, if I decided to watch the film I would be more
interested in the film itself.
