Hadley Learning Community
Key Objectives:
■■ Provide a robust, reliable, high performance network
and services with fast, secure and flexible access to
on-line learning tools
■■ Deliver an infrastructure to fully integrate all locally
delivered and council delivered services over one
converged network
■■ Enable access to learning resources outside school
hours, allowing the school to be used by adult
learners
Key Outcomes:
■■ A true 21st Century learning environment has been
created with ‘anytime, anywhere’ access to learning,
inclusive for the whole community
■■ A faster, more reliable network means pupils and
teachers are able get on with their daily activities
without interruption
■■ Centrally controlled building management services
are now possible, such as CCTV, access control and
temperature control
“Of key importance to us was to make the network as accessible as possible to the
community and this meant integrating withTelford &WrekinCouncil’s network
and working hand in hand with theCouncil’s ICT team to deliver an effective and
robust IT solution. When it was announced that Synetrix* had been appointed
for the delivery of the ICT Network, me and my colleagues at theCouncil were
extremely happy having engaged with Synetrix* on other schemes previously. This
gave us the confidence to believe that Synetrix* would be a good and reliable
partner in the delivery of the ICT to the specification and vision that we had for it.
We certainly weren’t wrong.”
Dr.Gill Eatough, Principal, Hadley LearningCommunity
Start date: March 2006
Term: Ongoing
Services: ICT Managed Service
Sector: Public Sector: Education
The Contract
The Hadley Learning Community project involved the build
of a totally new site to offer multiple services to the pupils,
teachers and the wider community including a 420-place
primary school, 1200-place secondary school, relocated Bridge
special school, library, crèche, nursery and childcare support,
health services for young children, a learning resource centre,
150-seat theatre, café, swimming pool, fitness gym and sports
pitches.
As a trusted partner to Telford & Wrekin since 2000, having
developed a strategy to consolidate their corporate network
with relative public sectors organisations, Synetrix* was
already in support of the evolution of the Telford network
that would lead to the Hadley Learning Community. Synetrix*
worked closely with the build project leader, Interserve,
Telford’s PFI contractor, to ensure that the ICT infrastructure is
not only able to address the current needs but is scaled
for future growth and expansion. Synetrix* is responsible for
the design, implementation and ongoing maintenance of the
network.
Synetrix* has provided the Hadley Learning Community and
ultimately the Borough of Telford & Wrekin Council with a
managed network infrastructure and services that underpin
and support the 21st century learning environment. The
infrastructure fully integrates all locally delivered and Council
delivered services over a common IP Network including
Authentication, Quality of Service (QoS), Indoor and outdoor
roaming wireless access, IP Telephony, Video Conferencing,
Digital TV, Digital Content – Video on Demand, Digital Signage
and fully filtered internet access.
Customer
Hadley is one of the first PFI based schools in the UK. Considered to be the blueprint for the Government’s
Building Schools for the Future scheme (BSF), the Hadley Learning Community is an exciting new development
led by Telford & Wrekin Council to provide top quality education with purpose built areas to deliver true 21st
century learning to the area. This project is part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s DfES-funded NGfL project - the
first e-learning project of its kind in Europe in 2000. The NGfL project provided school networking, linking all
primary and secondary schools in the region and 24,000 students. Making learning inclusive to all the community
is a responsibility that Telford & Wrekin Council takes seriously, hence their pioneering venture into this area; to
provide both a virtual and physical environment for ‘anywhere anytime’ learning and life-skills development.

Benefit
Synetrix* has delivered a total package of services into the new Hadley school campus, underpinned by a wired
and wireless infrastructure that delivers multi service connectivity throughout the campus converging unified
voice, data, and video services to Hadley Learning Community. These form the foundations for all services offered
as part of the new school.
A true 21st Century learning environment has been created with more flexible access to learning tools for pupils,
staff and adult learners alike.
*Synetrix is now part of Capita IT Services. Synetrix was acquired by Capita IT Services in December 2009
