Increasing demand for biofuel production
Thailand’s biofuel producers are reacting to a changing market situation. To
cater for the increased demand in biofuel poses a challenge.
Thailand is the sixth largest Ethanol producer in the
world. Thai Ethanol industry continues to grow
steadily propelled mainly by government policies.
In 2008, the Thai Government increased the
proportion of Ethanol in Gasohol to 20% to make E20
and to 85% to make E85. As a result, overall
consumption of Ethanol increased. In the next two
years the domestic demand for Ethanol in Thailand is
expected to increase by an average of 3-5%. This has
also to do with expansion of the vehicle fleet being
able to use higher ethanol mixes (e.g: E20/E85).
In 2017, the Thai Government launched its plan to
build a $11.3B Bio-economy hub for the region.
The rain dependent sugarcane production has paved
way for the increase in Ethanol produced from
Cassava from 30% to 40%.
Taiping Ethanol Co Ltd is one of the major Ethanol
producer in Thailand which uses Cassava roots to
manufacture Ethanol.

Production Process
Currently Taiping has an installed capacity of
producing 150,000 liters per day of Ethanol. Taiping
has invested to increase this capacity to eventually
300,000 liters per day.
Cassava flour is liquified to 90-95ºC followed by
saccharification at 55-65ºC. It is then cooled down to
30-33ºC. Subsequently this mixture is fermented by
adding yeast. During this process the Carbon Dioxide
is taken out. This is then finally sent to the distillation
unit where Ethanol is produced. Produced Ethanol is
mixed with Benzene to produce Gasohol.

Taiping was looking for an automation system which

Terminal management expertise to optimize
your process
The right answer for any application in a biofuel terminal.
Loading Metering Skids
The redundant loading skid (primary and standby
line) incorporates Endress+Hauser Promass F300
Coriolis mass flow meters at its heart. These flow
meters are modern yet proven, extremely accurate
and with high availability. These meters significantly
reduce OPEX and downtime since they do not have
any moving part.
The system also addresses the safety /security aspects
with card readers and grounding systems on board.
The alarm management is configured in the batch
controller. For increased safety, a tuning fork type
point level switch is attached to the loading arm to
prevent overfilling of the compartments.
The card reader validates the driver identity and
loading information. The grounding system ensures
the truck is grounded before commencing the loading
operation and the quality of the Gasohol is
maintained using a high precision additive injection
system.
The metering system is designed and built in
accordance with the recommendations in
international standards. The site electrical works and
installation was carried out as per the NEC/NFPA
guidelines.
Automatic Tank Gauging
It is of utmost importance to be in control of your
stock. The Endress+Hauser automatic tank gauging
system provides safe, accurate and reliable means of
performing this task. The system consists of high
precision Proservo intelligent tank gauge which is
designed for high accuracy custody transfer
applications and meets the demands of inventory
management and loss control.
It is imperative to have an accurate temperature
measurement for custody transfer tank gauging
applications. Endress+Hauser Prothermo provides
average tank temperature as well as water bottom
interface. It’s an intrinsically safe device which allows
safest electronic configuration.
Endress+Hauser TankScanner NXA820 and
Tankvision forms a robust industrial grade embedded
web based Tank Gauging system with high stability
and availability. Its modular design provides flexibility
for future system and instrumentation upgrades.
Tankvision provides user friendly visualization of
Tank Gauging information in both graphic and
numeric displays without the need of installing any
software or operating system dependency.
All Tank Gauging components from Endress+Hauser
are made compliant to OIML, NMI and PTB and can be
easily Weights and Measures approved by local
appointed bodies.

Overfill Prevention
Safety is a must to prevent incidents which can be
costly. Endress+Hauser Liquiphant tuning fork level
swtich for HHLA (High High level alarm) addresses
the safety concern in a simple yet reliable way.
The unique feature of this device is that it has no
mechanically moving parts, eliminating the need of
any maintenance. This is easy to install as there’s no
need of calibration. Safety is ensured by permanent
self-monitoring and full proof testing in accordance
with IEC 61508/IEC 61511 (SIL2/SIL3).

Control System
This is a part of the marshalling cabinet, which
houses PLC, Uninterrupted Power supply, Relays,
Isolators, Safety barriers, signal converter and
termination boxes.
The control system controls the pumps for the
Ethanol. It also controls the motorized valves on the
loading bay and includes visual alarm indicator for
tank high level alarms.

Terminal Management System
The primary tasks of an effective terminal
management system include the simple, quick and
secure collection and transfer of data throughout the
facility. Endress+Hauser’s Terminalvision is a perfect
solution for this requirement.

Terminalvision comes packed with all features
required for effective terminal management, out of
the box as a standard software.
With Terminalvision, the operator can view all actions
in the terminal including who is loading, using which
truck and what loading bay. Each truck can be
monitored for its loading status including the status of
the individual compartment of the truck.
Terminal reconciliation and mass balance can be
easily performed with a click of a button.
With the Hierarchical access privileges, data flow is
controlled and each user gets to access information
based on role in the organization.
Terminalvision helps to increase operational
efficiency by supporting automatic issuance of filling
advisory note and bill of lading, assurance of data
handling, transaction archiving and yard control.
As per Thai regulation, inventories, precisely assessed
by the Tank Gauging system, are automatically sent to
the Thai Excise system via an online data uplink.
