2. The polynomial x
2
+ rx + sx + rs is generally characterized
as quadratic polynomial since it has a degree of 2.
3. Example 1. Factor x2 – 5x – 14.
Steps in factoring quadratic trinomial:
a. look for the factor of the constant term which gives the sum of the
coefficient of the middle term.
Constant term = (-14) = -7 and 2
Coefficient of middle term(-5) = -7 + 2
b. Factor x
2
or the first term. = x . x
c. Write the factors obtained which is (x – 7) (x + 2).
4. Example 2. Factor x2 - 10x + 25.
Steps in factoring quadratic trinomial:
a. Look for the factor of the constant term which gives the sum of the
coefficient of x in the middle term.
constant term : (25) = -5 . -5
coefficient of x in the middle term : (-10) = (-5) + (-5)
b. Factor x
2
or the first term = x . X
c. Write the factors obtained which is (x – 5) (x – 5) .
5. Example 3. x2 + 2x – 35.
a. Look for the factor of the constant term which gives the sum of the
coefficient of x in the middle term.
constant term : (-35) = 7 . -5
coefficient of x in the middle term: (2) = (7) + (-5)
b. Factor x
2
or the middle term. = x . X
c. Copy the factors obtained which is (x + 7 (x – 5).
