TREES
All existing trees to be retained. One
new samll tree, Eucalyptus erythrocorys,
planted as shown.
LAWNS
Reducing lawn reduces overall water use,
as the lawns receive more water than the
low water-use garden beds & mulched ar-
eas with trees.
A central lawn area will be retained for a
‘kickabout and exercise area, and near the
existing playground and multi-use / ball
court.
SEATING
New park bench placed under existing
trees.
GARDENS
Existing patchy turf under trees to be
replaced with native plants to improve
appearance, increase fauna habitat and
reduce the overall water requirements for
the park.
HYDROZONING/ ECOZONING
Areas of lawn & mulch designates water use for each,
reducing overall water use, as the lawns receive more water
than the low water-use garden beds & mulched areas.
Irrigation hydrozoning zones:
Most water - lawns
Less water - waterwise garden beds & tree
mulch areas
Not irrigated - reliant on rainwater -
established tree areas to be mulched, including
verges, as shown
See plan for locations of zones 1, 2 & 3
Lawn retained for ‘kickabout & exercise area.
Garden beds of local waterwise plants adds habitat for
fauna, particularly birds and improves amenity for people.
New irrigation to be installed to entire park & verges.

2. Shaftesbury Ave Reserve, South Perth
The upgrade of this reserve is planned for construction during
Summer 2015/16.
Irrigation
The reserve’s irrigation will be upgraded in 2016 to provide a
more efficient irrigation system. Hydro-zoning and eco-zoning
the reserve will reduce the overall water use while providing a
high quality public open space.
Trees
All robust existing trees are to be retained. New Australian
trees will be planted to increase the canopy to the centre of
the park, and provide understorey with smaller trees.
Biodiversity
The upgrade allows the City to provide more biodiversity into
this reserve by introducing garden beds planted with low
water use, easy maintenance plants, including local native
plant species.
Access
New paths are planned to be installed in early summer
2015/16. This will provide inclusive access through the reserve
and into the playground area.
Amenity
Additional new seating throughout the reserve, new picnic
table and a drink fountain. The current basketball hoop will be
relocated with a new hardcourt surface for a multiball court
adjacent to the playground (netball hoop and a basketball
hoop). Improved turf areas along with hydrozoned garden
beds.
October 2015 City of South Perth
Hydro-zoning is the practice of grouping types
of vegetation into categories with similar water
requirements to reduce the occurrence of
overwatering. The City can then irrigate the
lawn area with adequate water to serve the
requirements of the reserve and reduce the
irrigation to the surrounding areas. This practice
is implemented to conserve water while still
providing high quality lawns for the designed
use, along with garden beds and shady trees.
