Puraran Beach Resort is located on the eastern coast of Catanduanes, Philippines and has a long history as a surfing destination. The village was originally called "Kapuraan" due to the surrounding pura trees and was discovered as a surfing spot in 1984. It is known for its long, barreling waves and has hosted surfing competitions. The resort offers several cottage accommodations, a restaurant serving local dishes, and surfing lessons and equipment rental. Other onsite activities include hiking, swimming, and island hopping.
3. BRIEF HISTORY OF PURARAN BEACH
• Folk legend tells, long ago, this quiet little fishing village was surrounded
by sturdy trees called “pura” (Red Lawaan tree). Thus people from
neighbouring villages refer to this place as “Kapuraan” meaning
“surrounded by Pura Trees”. Later, when Spaniards came it became
“Puraran”.
• Brief History of Puraran as International Surfing Destination.
• Situated along the eastern coast of the island province of Catanduanes,
Philippines, and facing the Pacific Ocean, Puraran is gifted with natural
scenic beauty with its long and white sandy beach, crystal clear water,
islets to explore and long, barrelled waves perfect for surfing.
4. PURARAN SURF HISTORY
• Puraran was a quiet little fishing village until 1984 when Australian surfer Peter Sutton riding on his
big motorbike in search of a surf spot came upon this village and discovered “the wave with the
perfect barrel”. Looking for a place to stay, he met the family of Mr. Rudy & Cecilia Soria both
teachers in the village school and stayed with the family in their little bungalow in front of the
school for months, with his Japanese wife Sally.
• A few months later, 2 Japanese surfers and Canadian Dale Sorachen came. Then more Japanese
came and started buying lands from the village people. Cecilia’s father Jorge Jacob Estrada,
recognizing the potential of tourism in this village refused to sell his land. With intense
encouragement from Peter Sutton, Cecilia sought permission from his father to build a few
cottages on his father’s land along the beach and buying that piece of that land eventually (to
become the present site of Puraran Surf Beach Resort). Around the same time, the Japanese
corporation HAROGEN started constructing the Puraran Beach Resort.
• Words spread about the new discovered surfing paradise and surfers from around the Globe
came pouring in. In 1986, before the onslaught of Typhoon Sisang in 1987, Hawaiin photographer
WARREN BOLSTER from Surfer Magazine came, along with the popular Hawaiian professional
surfers John Shimooka, Matt Mondragon and Tony Moniz. Amazed by the perfect barrelled form
of the waves and enchanted by the sunrise shining on the long white and empty shore of Puraran,
Warren Bolster featured the place in the Surfer Magazine calling the place “MAJESTICS” with its
majestic waves.
