1. Seven Sowers Benefice Parish Magazine is a magazine providing information on
Churches and community news, events, photographs and advertisements to seven
Somerset Parishes in the area of Taunton Deane. It is published monthly to about 800
subscribers and made available at Churches and at events around the Benefice.
The magazine project team worked on their own, remotely one afternoon a week for five
months, transferring material into InDesign and reworking individual pages and sections
to showcase different types of display. The team met with the magazine editor once
each month to discuss layouts and offer advice to her.
Marie was the second student to join the team and it was her task to keep
communications running between us all. She was working in what is to her a second
language, English, and managed this aspect very well indeed and particularly in spoken
English in which she is very skilled.
As a team member Marie was present for almost all of the meetings and displayed a
good understanding of what was needed to manage the progress of the project over the
time they were working on their own. She kept in contact with me via e-mail to talk
about the work, arrange meetings and generally explain progress. She also learned to
use and understand InDesign in much greater depth than had previously been required
of her.
In the one meeting we were able to have working at the computer, Marie showed a very
good level of engagement with the nature of the material. Her suggestions on layout
where guided by a clear understanding of what the content was and what it needed to
convey to the reader.
Marie has a mature understanding of project management, her English is excellent and
she is motivated to understand the material she is working with. I understand she is
interested in journalism and I would expect that her skill, interest and enthusiasm will be
an asset in building a successful career. I was most grateful for her efforts on the
magazine project.
