physical basis for works in the realms of the performing arts, new
media art, film, television, radio and video.
MEDIA INSTITUTION: As media has become part of our lives in
many different formats (reading, watching, listening), one could
say that the media has become part of our lives, like a government
or a state.
o A MEDIA INSTIUTION contains elements of Economic, Cultural

A social structure which constructs our cultural values and beliefs

3. Before making the film, the directors and/or
producers go to an institution and attempt to
pitch their film to the company as they
would fund the venture.
4. Our film is a gothic horror film influenced by both the
literary and film work of “Frankenstein”- it being the
front and foremost example of gothic horror. It follows the
story of a random psychopath knocking out and burying a
girl in a graveyard- similar to the scene of Quentin
Tarantino’s “Kill Bill”.
As our film has been influenced by both of these films, I
will look the production companies that distributed these
two films, TriStar and Miramax
5. A film usually premieres in cinemas either
nationally or internationally. After having
been shown at a cinema, the film would be
revoked and dispersed via DVD format to
various retailers including
supermarkets, drugstores, media stores. The
soundtrack of the film is usually released as
CD before the film hits retailers.
6. TriStar Pictures, Inc. (spelled as Tri-Star
until 1991) is an American film In 1998, Sony Pictures
Entertainment merged
production/distribution studio and subsidiary
Columbia and TriStar to form

to be established since RKO Pictures was
founded over 50 years earlier.
7. Miramax Films is an American entertainment company known for
distributing independent and foreign films.
The name stems from the combination of both their parents names,
Miriam and Max.
Founded in 1979 by Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Miramax was a leading
independent film motion picture distribution and production company
until it was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 1993.
The Weinstein's operated Miramax with more creative and financial
independence than any other division of Disney, until 2005 when they
decided to leave the company and founded The Weinstein Company.
Miramax was sold by Disney to Filmyard Holdings in 2010.
Among the company's other breakthrough films as distributors in the late
1980s and early 1990s were Scandal; Sex, Lies, and Videotape; Tie Me
Up! Tie Me Down!; The Crying Game and Clerks. The company also
made films such as Pulp Fiction, Flirting with Disaster, Heavenly
Creatures and Shakespeare in Love.
8. As we are located in the UK, I will also look at UK Film
Council and Vertigo Films which distribute both feature length
and short films and was set up in 2000 by the Labour
Government, funded by the National Lottery.
The UKFC states that it’s aim is to “To stimulate a competitive,
successful and vibrant UK film industry and culture, and to
promote the widest possible enjoyment and understanding of
cinema throughout the nations and regions of the UK. The
UKFC had a mandate that spans cultural, social and economic
priorities.”
When it was first established, it’s aims were to create “a
sustainable UK film industry.”
A reason for creating such an enterprise would be to earn more
money to benefit the ever needy economy.
It worked to make non-mainstream films, such as ours, more
widely available and cinema audiences in the UK.
9. In order to distribute their films effectively, they implemented the following
schemes:
The Prints and Advertising Fund: produce extra prints of non-mainstream or
more commercially-focused British films, or to publicise films more effectively
through advertising and other channels.
The Cinema Access Programme: purchase subtitling and audio-description
technologies that improve the cinema-going experience for people with hearing
and sight impairments.
The Digital Fund for Non Theatrical Exhibition: Expand the activities of film
clubs, societies community groups and mobile film exhibitors in order to improve
viewing opportunities for audiences in rural areas
The Digital Screen Network: investment to equip 240 screens in 210 cinemas
across the UK with digital projection technology to give UK audiences much
greater choice.
FindAnyFilm.com – the film search engine which told users when, where and
how a film is available in the UK, legally and across all formats and platforms –
cinema, TV, DVD & Blu-ray sale or rental, or download.
This indicates that the council is moving with the development of technological
distribution which will aid in keeping consumption at an equal level.
10. Vertigo Films is a British film production and film distribution
company based in London, England, producing and distributing
commercially driven independent cinema.
Initial production and distribution focus was on the previously
untapped 'lads' market
Vertigo are making more films per year than any other UK film
company and reaching into every genre, including family
films, dance, action, comedy, crime, horror, sci-fi, drama and
musicals.
Championing new talent has been key to Vertigo Film's production
strategy and it is at the forefront of breaking in new talent and
being a hub of emerging creativity in British Film
The company finances or co-finances films for a variety of
budgets, allowing them to tailor their films to the correct audience
11. For our film we would naturally consider
approaching the UK distributers so that our
budget issues would be covered. It would
also allowing us to have multiple opinions
on how to distribute our film, permitting us
to choose what we believe to most effective
in achieving our goal.
Also, one could approach the US distributers
if the film receives positive reviews before
hand.
12. Please add a section on festivals- I think
that would be really good as no one else
has! If you can, talk about TIFF and
Sundance.
