8. Microscope Introductions
A microscope is a laboratory instrument used to
examine objects that are too small to be seen by
the naked eye.
Microscopy is the science of investigating small
objects and structures using a microscope.
Microscopic means being invisible to the eye
unless aided by a microscope.
9. Types of Microscopes.
There are many types of microscopes,
The most common microscope is
the optical microscope, which uses
lenses to refract visible light that passed
through a thinly sectioned sample to
produce an observable image.
Other major types of microscopes are the
electron microscope which uses
electrons and their wave-like
characteristics to magnify an object's
image, unlike the optical microscope that
uses visible light to magnify images.
10. Importance of Microscopes
Scientist usually use the microscope to see
microorganisms such as cells, bacteria,
fungi, algae, protozoa, and many more.
One important uses of microscopes is the
ability to use it to diagnose illness and
diseases in hospitals and clinics all over the
world.
Microscopes can magnify blood samples,
so, doctors can see pathogenic infections
such as parasites, bacteria, and even
viruses.
12. Why is it Important for us to
be proficient with it?
Proficient microscopy skills are essential for success in various
disciplines in the biological sciences and even in select career fields
such as the medical field.
Also future science courses will require students to have background
knowledge on using microscopes.
Most importantly it will prepare you to take future exams such as the
8th grade state exam.
14. Activity Instructions
You will now be be participating in “Microscope
Chat.” This is a lab station activity designed to
review and reinforce your microscope skills and
concepts.
You will be broken down into groups of four and
be assigned to one of the four stations.
15. Activity Instructions
Your task is to read and complete each station`s
activity. You will have eight minutes to complete
each station.
Once time is up you will restore the station and
put any equipment back to its original spot.
Then you will move on to the next station.
17. Exit ticket
Exit Ticket: What were some areas of weakness
you saw yourself dealing with when you were
working during the stations? How could you
improve? Also rate yourself on how you feel
about this topic from 1-5, 5 being super familiar
and you can teach me, 1 being you have no
idea.
