End of the year message RA 2018
1. The year has almost come to an end and would like to take this
opportunity to share with you what this year has brought.
We would also like to thank you for being a part of our community. Your
support is very important for the continued existence of the Refugee
Academy: it is all about coming together, exchanging knowledge and
collectively reflecting on issues surrounding refugee inclusion in society.
16 February: ‘Voluntary work as a step
towards integration?’
13 March: ‘Integration of disciplinary
approaches to issues of refugee inclusion’
24 April: ‘Refugee women at work!’
together with Movisie
22 June: ‘Building the inclusive city:
experimental spaces for connection
between residents and newcomers’
together with Boost Amsterdam, in the
framework of the WeMakeThe.City Festival
2 October: ‘Newcomers and
entrepreneurship: thinking out of the box
to create connections’
6 December: ‘The ‘connective space’ as a
joint place: what do we need?’ together
with Pitztop
We can look back on a total of 6 meetings that we organized in 2018, all

During 2018, our community has grown considerably.
On LinkedIn, we have almost doubled in our followers;
now over 600! Also our team has expanded: we have
welcomed Sennay Ghebreab from Foundation Civic to
our team, as well as Nikki Scholten.
In 2018, we also launched our own website, where you
can find more about the Refugee Academy and our
team. All reports of our meetings and literature are
available there as well.
2019 will be an exciting year in terms of research: Halleh Ghorashi’s VICI-
project on engaged scholarship will start. The project aims to investigate
the contribution of engaged scholarship on the societal inclusion of
refugees, by collecting data in The Netherlands, USA and South Africa.
Please see this video interview with Halleh to find out more about the
project!
