This is a presentation by Oorja on Novel Industrial Applications using Solar Thermal Technologies. It was presented at InterSolar India 2015 at Mumbai on 19th Nov, 2015. The presentation discusses Dairy Processing, Community Cooking, Boiler Feedwater Preheating, Steel Mould Preheating, Industrial Effluent Treatment, Hydrogen Production using Solar Thermal Technologies.
2. ABOUT OORJA ENERGY
• Focus on providing Energy Efficient COOLING and
HEATING solutions:
Solar Steam Generation: For Cooking & Industrial
Process Heat
Energy Efficient Cooling (Radiant Cooling): 30-50%
savings on Air Conditioning Costs
Solar Cooling: Using Solar Hot Water/Steam for
Providing Cooling
Oorja is an approved Solar Thermal Systems
manufacturer by MNRE.
5. SOLAR INTEGRATION WITH EXISTING
SYSTEMS
Solar Heating systems should be integrated with existing systems already in operation
with the primary aim of reducing the total cost of operation. Solar Heating may not
provide all heat required for the process due to lack of space or seasonal variation in
solar radiation.
9. BOILER FEEDWATER PREHEATING
Solar water heaters can be used for pre-heating boiler feed
water or makeup water to 70-85 deg C and can have an
ROI within 2 years.
11. DAIRY PROCESSING
Multiple processes in Dairy require heat – Pasteurization, Cream
Pasteurizer, Ghee Melting, Powder or Khova (Mava) production
12. SOLAR COOLING
Adsorption and Absorption chiller can be used with hot
water generated from solar field to produce chilled water to
operate HVAC equipment.
15. STEEL MOULD PRE-HEATING
Moulds are heated using air to maintain them at
120-150 deg C when on conveyor and heat them
to 300 deg C before the molten steel is poured.
Molten Steel is poured in a mould
16. STEEL MOULD PRE-HEATING
Air is heated using electrical heater
banks placed in the air supply ducts.
Hot oil heating by Solar Concentrators can
be circulated in heat exchangers like this to
generate the same hot air
18. BITUMEN HEATING
Diesel is used to heat bitumen before sending it to mixing tank.
The temperature required for mixing is 150 deg C-160 deg C.
19. BITUMEN HEATING
Source: State University
of Rio de Janeiro
Simulation results show a high solar fraction of 83.7% , saving
significant fossil fuel.
20. AGGREGATES HEATING
Rock aggregates are also
used in road laying and
typically involving burning of
diesel to heat them before
mixing with Bitumen. Air at a
super-heated 160°C or vaporsuper-heated 160°C or vapor
steam at up to 300°C is used
for heating.
Solar heating can be used
(with conventional backup) for
this purpose greatly reducing
the cost of road laying.
21. INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENT DRYING
Industrial effluent drying is required for two reasons:
a) High cost of transport to landfill
b) Restrictions on effluent discharge & Zero Liquid Discharge policies
Using Solar Green House is one way of doing effluent drying as shown
below:
22. INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENT DRYING
Industrial
effluent can
also be dried
using Multi
Effect
Evaporators
(MEE) where(MEE) where
steam is used
to recover water
from the
effluent.
Steam required
for MEE can be
produced using
Solar
Concentrators
23. HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
To usher into a Hydrogen economy, Hydrogen needs to be
produced at an optimal cost. Ultra high solar concentration can be
used for Hydrogen production using Metal-oxide reactions.
